Chapter 111: Chapter 98 Work Requirements

Driving my senior sister around and refueling the car is going to cost money.

Han Yu felt a bit of heartache and silently reminded himself not to live beyond his means again.

However, there was also a cause for joy. He had always felt guilty for causing his sister to change jobs, but upon returning to Binjiang, he discovered that she had actually grown to like police work.

Every morning, she proudly wore her uniform to drop off little Dongdong at the daycare, and worn it again to pick him up in the afternoon. Little Dongdong was very proud and self-confident, which made the other children quite envious.

Even though it meant earning a few bucks less each month, the pride of wearing the uniform and the sense of accomplishment from helping travelers was something she couldn’t experience as a hotel room attendant.

Now, even if you asked her to return to the Sailor Club, she wouldn’t want to.

The siblings even made a pact to put on their uniforms and take a photo together during New Year’s.

In the following days, Han Yu was extremely busy.

First, a Dunship was to be launched, and the 001 was ready for its second firefighting drill.

Although it was called a firefighting drill, it actually involved using the water cannons on the 001 to simulate heavy rain, testing the sealing of the upper structures of the Dunship.

If any leaks were found, it would be best to address them at the shipyard, as fixing them once the ship was by the river would be much more troublesome.

Moreover, since the Dunship was large, the 001 had to vacate the berth at the small dock of the shipyard and move to the small dock behind the Yanjiang Police Station.

Once the sealing test was done, the mast, radio antennas, various signal lights, and loudspeakers had to be installed, along with testing the strong current, weak current, and emergency power systems of the Dunship.

Master Zhou was very skilled and had a good design, but the shipyard lacked a professional electrician.

Several switch cabinets were produced by external manufacturers, but they only knew their own products. It required an experienced electrician to integrate and troubleshoot them.

Master Xu, the brother-in-law’s colleague and good friend, became the off-staff electrical engineer for the Bailong Port Shipyard, and Manager Wu rode his motorcycle every afternoon to pick him up for some private work.

As it involved future use and maintenance, Han Yu and Liang Xiaoyu had to participate throughout the process.

The two of them were busy learning to be electricians, and the last batch of equipment, spare parts, and commonly used tools had arrived.

One diesel generator, one welding machine, one bench vise...

These pieces of equipment and tools were essential. It was always windy on the river, and Linghai experienced typhoons every summer. Even when there wasn’t a typhoon, Bailong Port frequently had power outages.

Without a generator on hand, radio communication would be interrupted, and the Dunship’s electrical systems would be paralyzed, even to the extent that signal lights on the top of the ship wouldn’t light up.

It’s not a big issue not to have light signals during the day, but it’s possible to get hit by passing ships at night without lights.

The welding machine, bench vise, and a plethora of commonly used tools were for maintenance and repair of the Dunship as well as 001 and 002.

Several cabins beneath the deck of the Dunship were put to use, one was designated for storing various spare parts, another had a workbench welded with steel plates and a bench vise installed, serving as a mechanical workshop.

One room served as a document storage, holding a full set of registration and inspection documents for 001 and the Dunship, along with qualifications, manuals, and circuit diagrams for various ship equipment—all categorized and stored.

One was converted into a crew cabin, which could accommodate extra people on wire beds, if necessary.

Another served as a storage room. It was unclear what it would store at the moment, but it was certain that more and more items would be needed once it was operational. Setting aside space now meant there would be no need to worry about storage later.

And one as a utility room, specifically for storing cleaning tools like dustpans, brooms, and mops.

...

Just as Han Yu, with the approval of the director, had organized the different functional zones and began moving the equipment, spare parts, common tools, and various documents onto the Dunship, Director Yu from the Water Security Department arrived in a truck filled with desks, wooden beds, and file cabinets.

The truck kept driving to the dock, seeming also ready to load on a ship.

He pushed open the truck door, jumped down from the passenger side, and looked up to ask, "Salted Fish, where’s Director Xu?"

The director had given clear instructions: to show respect to Director Yu. Han Yu immediately stood at attention and saluted: "Reporting to Director Yu, Director Xu is accompanying leaders from the Procuratorate and the court to view the public trial and sentencing site at Bailong Port."

Yu Xiangqian curiously asked, "What public trial and sentencing is to take place?"

"It’s for the public sentencing of those scalpers who resell ferry tickets. Leaders from the Binjiang Port Police Station and the Changhang East Sea Branch will also attend. After the public trial, there will be a public arrest event and a ceremony to return the recovered bicycles—that’s the case Commander Li and the Four Factory Police Station worked on together.

The suspects accused of bicycle theft are all from out-of-town, and the owners are all East Sea people. The owners will come by passenger ship, attend the return ceremony, collect their stolen bicycles, stay one night in a Bailong Port guesthouse, and then return to East Sea by passenger ship the next morning."

There’s both a public trial and a public arrest, and even a ceremony for returning items. Quite a big event.

But then again, if it wasn’t major, it wouldn’t be Xu Sanye’s style.

Yu Xiangqian caught on and, accompanied by a good-looking young officer in his twenties, stepped onto the Dunship, smiling as he asked, "When will the public trial and arrest take place?"

"The public trial will be the morning after next, and the public arrest in the afternoon. Director Yu, Director Xu said that when the public arrest and return ceremony are held, we’d like to invite you to attend and have a seat on the stage."

"Why would I be on the stage..."

"The clue for the bicycle theft was discovered by me, and the first batch of bicycles was seized by me on this dock. Director Xu said that this is a victory for our water security forces, and since you lead our Water Police Station, you’ll represent not only the Water Police Station but also the City Bureau."

Returning the recovered bicycles to their East Sea owners is not an everyday occasion to feature one’s presence.

Thinking of sitting on the stage, Yu Xiangqian grinned and said, "Director Xu is being too polite."

"It’s not a matter of politeness; it’s about work."

"Right, right, it’s work."

Yu Xiangqian was becoming increasingly fond of the smart and capable Little Salted Fish in front of him. He patted his arm, "Salted Fish, meet our comrade Chen Zikun from the Water Security Department. Zikun is a collegiate graduate from the teachers’ college!"

Han Yu swiftly saluted upon hearing this, as he had been told a few days before, "Hello, Brother Chen, welcome to inspect our work."

"I am here to learn from you, Little Salted Fish. Director Yu almost mentions you every day."

"Really?"

"Salted Fish, I’m going to take a look at Bailong Port first. It’s Zikun’s first visit and he doesn’t know anyone, so I’m leaving the stuff in the car with you."

"Unload everything and load it onto the ship?"

"Why else would I haul it all the way from the City Bureau if not to load onto a ship? You’re familiar with the shipyard side, please ask for their help."

"Understood!"

Yu Xiangqian really wanted to check out the venue for the day after tomorrow’s public arrest meeting and the bicycle return ceremony. Taking a few steps away, he returned, pulling out a pack of cigarettes from his briefcase, "Almost forgot, you can’t ask for help without giving out cigarettes."

Han Yu chuckled, "It’s alright, no need to be so courteous."

"You just said your Director Xu isn’t just being courteous but also has work needs. Giving out cigarettes is a work need too. I’ll leave this here with you; I’m going to find your Director Xu."

Yu Xiangqian spoke and left swiftly, leaving Chen Zikun feeling a bit awkward being left alone.

Han Yu walked over to the truck to check and then lifted his walkie-talkie, "Xiao Yu, Xiao Yu, please tell Xiao Jiang and the others to stop what they’re doing and come help unload first."

"Salted Fish, unload what?"

"Director Yu has arrived; we’re unloading what Director Yu brought from the City Bureau."

"Roger that, we’re on our way."

Some kids can handle everything by themselves, not only fixing and steering ships but also participating in case investigations and even dangerous boarding missions. Now he’s even the "foreman" of the dock...

Chen Zikun felt that compared to the impressive Little Salted Fish before him, he was nothing more than a faux police officer.

Han Yu didn’t realize how much Chen Zikun envied him, put down his walkie-talkie and asked, "Brother Chen, the driver must also be from the City Bureau, right?"

"Yes, Master Qian is an employee of our City Bureau."

"Then there’s nothing to worry about with unloading. Let’s go, I’ll take you to see your office."

"Alright, thank you."

Chen Zikun originally thought that being assigned to the Police Bureau, he would get to handle cases, but instead, he was placed in the Water Security Department that doesn’t actually handle cases. Spending his days writing documents with Scholar Yu and occasionally representing the City Bureau at meetings related to water security management felt uninteresting to him.

Upon seeing the majestic dunship decked out with police insignia and "Water Shang 110" plaques and the parked ship nearby that resembled a small navy vessel, Chen Zikun felt this was where Water Police should really be stationed. His blood was pumping with excitement.

Han Yu led him upstairs to the second floor, opened the door, "Brother Chen, what do you think of this office?"

The office was quite spacious, about thirty square meters, with bright windows and a spotless environment.

Chen Zikun peeked around and laughed, "Pretty good, not just pretty good, it’s great!"

"Next door is the command and dispatch room. When it gets hotter, you can come to the dispatch room and enjoy the air conditioning."

"What about your offices?"

"Our station is small; we don’t need a dedicated office. Once the dunship is towed to the riverside, we’ll all work from the command and dispatch room."

"What’s that office over there?"

"That’s not an office; that’s a conference room. Next to the conference room are the dormitories, and the room to the south of your office is also a dormitory."

"How many rooms are there on the second floor in total?"

"The command and dispatch room and the conference room are larger, so there are only these six rooms on the second floor."

This was Chen Zikun’s first time on a dunship, and he was curious about everything. Leaning on the railing, looking down, he asked, "What about the first floor?"

With a smile, Han Yu introduced, "There are eight rooms on the first floor. To the left of the corridor is the police duty room, and to the right is both the duty room and office of the Port Supervision. Their dormitory is the same as yours, on the second floor, at the very front."

"What about your dormitories?"

"Our dorms are on the first floor, just below the deck is an armory, and we have to watch over the weapons and ammunition."

"There’s an armory on this ship!"

"Of course. How else would we enforce the law on the river?"

Curiosity filled Chen Zikun as he asked, "How many weapons do you have?"

That was military secrecy; anyone else certainly couldn’t be told.

But he wasn’t a stranger, and with a sense of pride, Han Yu boasted, "Initially, we only had two pistols and four 56 Assault Rifles. Later, Director Xu planned to train for anti-ship hijacking and hostage rescues, and found that the cabins and corridors on passenger and cargo ships are small and complicated, which made the 56 Assault Rifle cumbersome to use. So we got another two Qijiu Micro Submachine Guns from the bureau."

Chen Zikun couldn’t believe it was true and exclaimed in shock, "Salted Fish, your station only has four officers, how can you have so many guns!"

A few guns, what’s the big deal? If this were ten years ago, we’d have mounted dual-purpose high anti-aircraft guns already.

One look and you could tell he had not been exposed to much, and likely hadn’t even fired a gun before.

Facing Chen Zikun, a bureaucrat police officer, Han Yu was filled with a sense of pride and superiority, offhandedly remarking, "It’s a job necessity."
