Chapter 261: Chapter 197: The Second Master Who Drives at the Slightest Disagreement

But since he was so interested, and it was rare for them to go out on a date alone, she was naturally eager for it.

They only returned home after the moonlight faded.

As they reached the villa entrance, Faye noticed that the house was surprisingly dark.

She got out of the car, puzzled: "Is no one home? Why are the lights off?"

After parking the car, Hunter walked over to her side and looked inside: "Did Uncle Rivers mention taking the kids out today?"

Faye shook her head: "No, he didn’t."

"That’s strange," he looked at his watch: "Let’s go in and check. If no one’s home, we’ll call Uncle Rivers."

He turned on his phone’s flashlight and held her as they walked in.

When they pushed the door, they found it unlocked, making Faye even more puzzled: "The door’s not locked."

"Could there be a power outage?" Faye looked around in the pitch blackness: "It’s possible, let’s go in quickly."

Faye grabbed Hunter’s hand and walked into the courtyard.

Once inside, Faye softly called out: "Darnley, Miya, Mommy’s home."

But there was no response from the room.

The moment the phone’s light shone into the room, all the lights in the living room suddenly turned on.

From darkness to light, Faye’s eyes involuntarily blinked shut.

Soon, a chorus of joyful cheer erupted in front of her.

When Faye adjusted to the brightness and opened her eyes, she saw Miya and Darnley holding a cake obediently, accompanied by Owen and Roman on either side, followed by the four house staff and Uncle Rivers, all saying "Happy Birthday" to her.

Faye was a bit dazed, "Today’s my birthday?"

Hunter, standing beside the already stunned Faye, wrapped an arm around her shoulder and smiled: "Didn’t remember?"

Faye turned to look at him, her eyes filled with happiness and surprise, and shook her head with a smile.

"I completely forgot."

No wonder Hunter refused to bring her back today.

Her eyes moved from everyone to the living room filled with balloons and flowers, and she couldn’t help but cover her mouth with her hands, truly surprised by the large scale.

"Mommy, happy birthday." Darnley, who usually called her Faye, now calling her mommy, made her a bit unaccustomed.

"Happy birthday, Mommy." Miya chimed in sweetly.

Faye stepped forward to pick up the cake: "Thank you, my treasures, Mommy’s so happy."

Miya hurriedly added: "Mommy, look at the cake, Darnley and I made it."

Faye glanced down and noticed the cake’s decoration was a bit... ’unique’.

If a bakery made a cake like this, it might have gone out of business long ago.

But... when did these little guys learn to do this?

"What a beautiful cake," Faye said, her eyes reddening with emotion. Her two babies were only five, yet they had made her a cake.

She mused on just how fortunate she was.

"Darnley, Miya, Mommy thanks you both."

Miya tugged on her clothes: "Mommy, I drew you on top.

The writing is by my brother. We’re great, aren’t we?"

"Yes, you two are wonderful."

Uncle Rivers stepped forward to help Faye set the cake on the table.

Faye picked up Miya: "When did you learn all of this?"

"We’ve been learning when you were busy and also when we went to Grandpa Forrest’s.

There’s an auntie at Grandpa Forrest’s who’s great at making cakes," Miya cooed, hugging her neck.

Faye nodded: "Thank you, it’s the best birthday cake Mommy has ever seen."

Owen and Roman handed over birthday gifts, and after Faye thanked them, everyone was invited into the living room by Hunter.

"Actually, I’m the one who worked the hardest today, why is no one giving me a shoulder rub?"

Roman walked over and pouted: "What hard work? Look at how this place is set up, you didn’t contribute even a tiny bit."

"I’m emotionally strained, okay? Faye kept insisting on coming back.

If I hadn’t been steadfast, we might have already been dragged back by Faye."

Faye turned to look at him: "You all worked hard, so can we stop competing for credit now?"

She’d been outside puzzled if something was up, and it turned out to be this.

Thinking back, staying out wandering when they could have come home was truly silly.

After dinner, Owen called Hunter into the study.

The two had some work matters to discuss.

Besides his law firm, Owen was also the well-paid chief legal advisor for Hunter’s company.

Since they had matters to discuss, Faye and the others naturally didn’t disturb them.

She chatted with Roman in the living room.

Roman asked if she had seen Sebastian recently.

Faye shook her head: "Haven’t seen her since my brother’s wedding, it’s been days."

She finished and turned to look at him: "Why bring that up?"

"She checked into our hospital for a couple of days recently.

No symptoms, yet insisted on being admitted.

Some doctors at our hospital asked me what her deal was.

She claimed to know me to the other doctors, and though not ill, she demanded admission.

Does she think our hospital’s a hotel?

I was busy those days and didn’t find out what she was up to.

She discharged herself after two days.

I worry she’ll disrupt your and Hunter’s life, so I asked."

Faye nodded: "She really hasn’t been around these days."

Thinking about it, maybe that time she made a fuss with Hunter didn’t go well, so fearing repercussions, she admitted herself to the hospital.

"If that’s so, I’m relieved.

But your Hunter’s truly devoted to you now.

I wanted to mention this to him the other day, but when I brought up Sebastian’s name, he cut me off, telling me not to waste words and hung up on me."

Hearing Roman say this, Faye felt warmth spread in her heart.

After Owen and Hunter finished discussing work, they chatted about personal matters.

Owen asked Hunter if he had given Faye the contract transferring stock ownership.

Seeing Hunter nod, Owen shook his head and laughed: "To see someone so calm as you do something so crazy for love.

I suddenly feel I should get a ’love vaccine’.

Otherwise, what if I fall into the trap of love one day? I might not recover."

"That’s why you won’t understand love, serves you right for not encountering it."

Owen scoffed with a laugh: "Show off, go ahead and flaunt your romance with Faye.

Anyway, as someone who doesn’t understand love, I have no envy whatsoever."

Hunter chuckled with a wicked charm: "By the way, how’s that case I asked you to investigate?"

"Walter’s?"

"Any clues?" Hunter sat back casually, crossing his legs, looking at ease.

Owen let out a heavy sigh: "This is quite tricky because it happened many years ago, and Walter’s nationality is now unclear, making it complicated."

"No matter how tough, find a way to handle it for me."

Owen laughed: "Don’t worry, when it comes to your matters, I always give it my all.

Though it’s tricky, it’s not without leads.

I contacted a senior from my past, and he helped find issues with Walter’s funding sources.

I’ve assigned someone to focus on that angle, just give me a few more days.

Maybe soon we’ll have good news."

Hunter nodded in acknowledgment.

After a while, seemingly reminded of something, Owen inquired: "How’s your side, did the test results come out?"

Hunter paused for a moment before raising his brows: "Two days ago, I’m thinking of waiting a few days before telling Faye."

"Why? Does it make any difference?"

"If I tell Faye now, she’ll be conflicted about whether to inform Richard and be troubled.

Since your side is ongoing, it’s not urgent at this moment.

Right now, informing Richard would only excite him more, so I’ll keep this secret for a few more days."

Outside the study, Faye entered with two glasses of red wine. She looked at Hunter and asked curiously: "What secret are you two discussing?"

Hunter and Owen exchanged glances, and he stepped forward to take the wine, handing one glass to Owen and keeping one for himself: "We were talking about Roman."

Faye showed great interest: "What’s Roman’s secret? Tell me so I can have a laugh too."

Hunter glanced toward the door and whispered: "I’ll tell you later.

Is this wine your selection? It’s nice, have a glass yourself."

Faye pouted and shook her head: "I’ve had two glasses tonight, more would be over the top, moderation is key."

Hunter reached out to ruffle her hair: "Alright."

Owen raised a brow, asking her: "Faye, are you happy these days?"

Faye pursed her lips and tilted her head with a soft smile: "What do you think?"

"I’m asking you, not a mind reader, can’t answer for you."

Faye pointed to her own face: "Can’t you tell from my rosy, radiant complexion?"

Owen drank a sip of wine without comment: "I only see the thickness of your face increasing."

Faye glared at him: "I can’t be bothered with you."

She turned to Hunter, smiling: "You two go on being gossip kings, I’m off to be with the kids."

After Faye left, Owen gave Hunter a thumbs-up: "I almost thought you’d tell Faye the truth."

"A little white lie is not out of the question."

Owen crossed his arms: "Enough talk, since today is Faye’s birthday, Roman and I will take our leave, spend some good time with her."

Hunter exited with Faye to see Owen and Roman off.

As they returned from the door, she wrapped her arm around his: "Today was a wonderfully happy birthday.

It’s the happiest I’ve been for a birthday in seven years; thank you."

Hunter leaned slightly toward her: "I’m not accepting thanks like that, I want something more tangible."
