Chapter 189: Chapter 182: A Hundred Million Drifting to a Billion (Part 2)
Tong Ai Ni’s concerns were clearly unnecessary. Tong Aino was also worried about his brother at the moment, naturally understanding Yi Luowa’s feelings. How could he possibly joke around with her?
Breakfast felt a little stifling. Connie was the last to learn about everything, and she didn’t say a word. After finishing her meal, she quietly pulled Yi Luowa along for a walk in the back garden to relieve some stress.
The two strolled and stopped intermittently, playing around for less than an hour when Tong Aino showed up. "Sis-in-law, the news conference is being broadcast live on TV. Do you want to watch it?"
Yi Luowa paused for a moment, then shook her head. "We already know the outcome. I won’t watch."
Tong Aino glanced at her. "Mom asked the servants to prepare ice packs for you. If you’re not watching TV, go upstairs and use them. Don’t let Second Uncle see and feel distressed."
Yi Luowa pressed her lips together briefly. "Fine, I’ll go upstairs. You should keep Connie company."
Connie tugged at her arm, "I’ll go with you."
Yi Luowa blinked at her, "You’re ridiculous!"
Connie gave a gentle smile. "Fifth Brother has so much to do; he doesn’t have time to keep me company."
Tong Aino snorted indignantly, "You’re absolutely mistaken. I’m extremely free right now."
Yi Luowa pushed him lightly, "You’re even more annoying than your brother! Everything good turns sour in your mouth!"
The moment Tong Airui’s name was brought up, both Yi Luowa and Tong Aino fell silent. Connie quickly tried to lighten the mood with a smile, "Fourth Brother will surely return victorious!"
"Needless to say! When has my brother ever suffered a loss?" Tong Aino casually plucked a rose. "Here, Sis-in-law, let me put this on you. Even though my fourth brother is gone, we should still look fabulous."
Yi Luowa chuckled and pushed his hand away, "You better give it to Connie instead."
Tong Aino pouted, "She’s a princess, dripping with gold and jewels. She wouldn’t care for this kind of thing!"
Connie furrowed her brows briefly, then took the rose from Tong Aino’s hand. "Fifth Brother, so you actually remember things from when I was a kid?"
"When you were a little kid, I was already quite grown!" Tong Aino shot her an irritated look and turned to leave.
Connie pinned the rose into her hair and shouted, "Fifth Brother, I’ve put it on!"
Tong Aino glanced back at her but quickened his pace.
Yi Luowa gossiped with Connie, "Seems like there’s a story here?"
Connie asked dejectedly, "Luowa, when you were little, did you ever like any other boys?"
Yi Luowa shook her head lightly. "When I was little, I liked girls because I always thought I was a boy myself."
Connie sighed quietly. "When I first started to have feelings, I liked Fifth Brother. But I’m the type who’s never proactive. Even the liking was done secretly, without daring to let anyone know. Once, I went to my aunt’s place to play, and Fifth Brother casually picked a rose. He asked Ai Ni if she wanted to wear it. Ai Ni said she didn’t like it. Then he turned to me and asked, ’So, do you want it?’ I suddenly got angry at that moment and snatched the rose from his hand, threw it to the ground, and stomped on it angrily, saying, ’The palace has everything; I don’t care for your silly flower!’"
Yi Luowa tilted her head thoughtfully. "I kind of understand your feelings at the time. The person you liked gave you something discarded by someone else—how could you not be upset? If it were me, I’d definitely be angry as well. But Aino sure bears grudges—isn’t this a bit much to hold onto for so many years?"
Connie remorsefully said, "He’s not being petty; he just wanted me to give up! I remember my uncle asked him once what kind of girl he’d want to marry in the future. He said he wanted a wife like Aunt Yaoyao—generous, courageous, and understanding. But me? I’m not brave. I always act conventionally, and I’m stubborn. I don’t meet any of his criteria. So when Fifth Brother realized my feelings, he began ignoring me."
Yi Luowa looped her arm through hers. "Find a time to talk things over with Aino properly."
"Words alone aren’t enough. I’ll prove it through action, step by step." Connie said with determination.
Yi Luowa shrugged. "Dear, you better hurry up. Aino isn’t getting any younger. If someone else catches his eye, you might lose your chance!"
"If that happens, it just means we’re not destined to be." Connie looked at Yi Luowa with a pained expression, "I really envy you. If only I could be as carefree as you are—it’d be wonderful."
"I call it being thick-skinned. It’s all thanks to Second Uncle letting me grow up carefree. You’re not the same; you’re a princess, bound by so many rules."
Connie excitedly gripped Yi Luowa’s hand, "Luowa, let’s be friends! I want to learn from you."
"Sure! And I’ll learn from you how to act like a proper lady." Yi Luowa tightly held Connie’s hand.
Chatting and laughing, the two returned to the hall. Tong Yao and the others were watching the live broadcast on TV. Long Che couldn’t take it anymore after hearing half of it. "That damned woman—it’s too good for her to just die like that!"
Connie jumped in fright and nervously glanced at Yi Luowa.
Yi Luowa shook her head and pulled her over to sit beside Tong Yao, whispering, "Mom, stop Uncle from watching this show. Don’t let him ruin his health from anger."
Long Che turned his head to look, "You little rascal, what kind of generation is this? Calling your mother-in-law ’Mom’ and me ’Uncle!’"
Yi Luowa stuck out her tongue, "You haven’t given me the customary gift money for changing how I address you. I’m waiting to see the money before I call you properly."
Long Che laughed and nudged Tong Yao, "How much will you give?"
"One billion soaring to ten billion." Tong Yao joked.
"Then I’ll give ten billion soaring to one billion." Long Che grinned. "Girl, Dad will write you a check later."
"Thanks, Dad~" Yi Luowa giggled cheerfully.
You Jia and Monica exchanged a glance. Then, looking at them, and back at themselves, they couldn’t help but feel disheartened. Truly, comparisons were deadly.
Long Che gave them a sideways glance, picked up the remote, and turned off the TV. "What’s there to watch? Luowa is family. You two are outsiders—outsiders who tricked my daughters!"
You Jia lowered his head and said nothing.
Monica grinned sheepishly despite being scolded.
"Long Che!" Tong Yao shot him a warning glare.
"Dad, if you don’t want to watch TV anymore, how about I play chess with you?" Yi Luowa smiled sweetly at Long Che. She was mainly trying to distract him. You Jia and Monica were already adults; being constantly scolded was surely hard to endure.
Long Che nodded, but before he could speak, Monica thoughtfully fetched the chessboard.
As the game began, everyone gradually gathered around.
Yi Luowa deliberately lost two rounds to cheer Long Che up.
When the third game started, Long Che suddenly said sternly, "This time, if you let me win again, there’ll be no changing of address money for you!"
Yi Luowa pouted, looking displeased. "We agreed on it! How can you go back on your word?"
"Then win against me once."
"I’ll try my best! Dad’s chess skills are the best in the family! To beat you, I’d have to use all my strength." Yi Luowa puffed up her cheeks playfully. "You take the black pieces first."
Long Che didn’t decline and placed the first piece on the board.
Just as the game was nearing its climax, Mi Xiaotian and Yan Zi walked in. "We found the person who made Han Yirou miscarry!"
Long Che glared at them. "Save your nonsense for later!"
Tong Yao smacked him lightly. "Can’t you speak properly? Xiaotian, tell us—who did this?"
