Chapter 29: Two Variety Shows and a Concert! Attending Jane Zhang’s Performance!
For the next two weeks, Shen Lang focused entirely on filming The Untamed.
Starting the following month, his schedule would become even busier. Not only would he attend Jane Zhang’s May 5th concert in Beijing, but he’d also begin recording for two major variety shows.
Shen Teng had secured him a spot on Back to Field Season 2, specifically Episode 9. Host He Jiong had already called him to confirm the recording dates: May 19th and 20th.
Back to Field Season 2 had already begun airing, with new episodes premiering every Friday at 10 PM. Several episodes had already been filmed, with different guests appearing each time. After reviewing the lineup, He Jiong had decided Shen Lang would be perfect for Episode 9.
But that wasn’t all.
Thanks to Shen Teng’s connections, Shen Lang also received an invitation to join Keep Running Season 2—though his strong performance on Trump Card had certainly helped.
(Keep Running had rebranded from Running Man China the previous year to avoid licensing fees.)
He’d be filming Episode 8 on May 12th and 13th.
With Jane Zhang’s concert on the 5th, Shen Lang would need to take three consecutive weekends off.
To make up for lost time, he doubled down on filming—shooting day and night to free up his schedule.
Originally, he’d considered turning down the offers, but since both shows came through Shen Teng’s efforts, he couldn’t refuse.
“Lang, I’m so jealous. I wish I had an uncle like yours.”
Meng Ziyi couldn’t hide her envy.
Shen Lang responded flatly, “I want to be an actor, not a variety star. But… this is how it is for now.”
Meng Ziyi playfully bit his arm. With opportunities like these, what more could you want?
May 4th
Shen Lang arrived in Beijing a day early to rehearse with Jane Zhang.
“Lang, you’re finally here!”
Jane pulled him into a tight hug. “I was starting to think you’d bail on me, hehe~”
“By the way, you’re my only guest performer. So you can’t just sing ‘Under the Sea’—you’ll have to cover one of my songs too.”
“Oh, and we’re doing a duet.”
“Which of my songs do you know?”
Shen Lang answered seriously, “All of them.”
“Really?”
“I never lie.”
“Well, I’ll trust you for now.”
Jane grinned and quickly briefed him on concert logistics before diving into rehearsals—blocking his stage movements, timing transitions, and more.
They practiced until midnight before finally calling it a day.
May 5th – Concert Day
Tonight’s show marked the kickoff of Jane Zhang’s 2018 “Truth” World Tour.
Aside from Shen Lang, her only guest performer was a violinist.
After a quick breakfast, Shen Lang met up with Jane, and they headed to Cadillac Arena together.
“Don’t be nervous, Lang. Treat it like karaoke. Just follow last night’s rehearsal. You’ve got this!”
“When you hold your own concert someday, I’ll return the favor!”
She kept encouraging him during the ride, though Shen Lang wasn’t actually nervous—he just listened politely as a newcomer should.
“Jane, your popularity is insane. Look at all these fans!”
“This is nothing. If I were really big, I’d book the Bird’s Nest.” She sighed. “Jason Zhang outshines me—he actually did a concert there.”
“Lang, aim high! One day, you’ll headline the Bird’s Nest too!”
Shen Lang: “…”
Music and variety shows were just side gigs for him. Acting was his main focus.
At most, he’d sing OSTs for his own dramas or “compose” a song if inspiration struck.
As for variety shows? They were a way to build visibility—but overdoing it would typecast him as a variety star rather than an actor.
He’d limit himself to one regular show at most.
Still, landing spots on two top-rated programs as a rookie? Most newcomers could only dream of such opportunities.

After slipping in through the staff entrance, Jane dragged Shen Lang into one last rehearsal and script run-through.
Before he knew it, the concert began. Jane gave him a reassuring pat. “Relax. Watch me first—get a feel for the stage.”
She opened with “Finally Wait for You”, instantly igniting a crowd-wide singalong.
Followed by “What We Agreed On”, “Painting Hearts”, and more.
Half an hour in, she finally announced her special guest.
“Give a warm welcome to my good friend!”
The crowd erupted in thunderous applause—completely unaware of this surprise segment.
Shen Lang stepped onto the stage, heart pounding with excitement.
“Everyone, this is Shen Lang! Let’s hear it for him!”
With a nod from Jane, the stage was his.
The opening notes of “Under the Sea”—the hopeful version—filled the arena.
By the time he finished, the audience was chanting “Encore!” and “Shen Lang!”
After some playful banter, the next song began.
To everyone’s surprise, the intro was unfamiliar—a brand-new track!
