Chapter 49: The most unpredictable thing

Mason walked back into the restaurant, his mind still on Sarah and the Silas man, who had taken her away. He forced himself to focus as he approached the table where Diana Han was waiting for him.

Diana was the heiress of the Han Family, the second largest business family in Wuhan city. She was beautiful in the way that rich women often were - polished, perfect, and completely artificial.

"Mason, there you are," Diana said with a bright smile as he sat down. "I was starting to worry that you had left me."

"Sorry about that," Mason said, picking up his wine glass. "Business call."

Diana leaned forward, her hand reaching across the table toward his. "You work too much. You should learn to relax."

Mason pulled his hand away before she could touch him, pretending to reach for his napkin. Diana’s touch made his skin crawl, just like others.

"The merger with your father’s company," Mason said, steering the conversation back to business. "Has he made a decision?"

Diana pouted. "Do we have to talk about work? We’re having such a nice dinner."

Mason’s jaw tightened. This dinner was only happening because he needed Han Industries to agree to the merger. It was a business deal worth billions, and Diana’s father had specifically requested that Mason handle the negotiations personally.

"The merger is why we’re here, Diana," Mason said coolly.

"Is it?" Diana asked, her voice turning flirtatious. She leaned forward more, her hand moving toward his arm. "I think you’re here because you missed me."

Mason shifted away from her touch again. "I’m married, Diana."

"Oh, that," Diana said with a laugh, waving her hand dismissively. "I heard about your little arrangement. But everyone knows it’s not real."

Mason’s eyes flashed dangerously. "It’s real enough."

To prove his point, Mason held up his left hand, showing her the gold wedding ring on his finger. He had put it on that morning before leaving for work, though he couldn’t quite explain why. He usually only wore it when they had public events together.

Diana stared at the ring, her smile faltering slightly. "You actually wear it?"

"I’m married," Mason repeated firmly.

"I don’t care," Diana said, her voice getting more desperate. "I don’t care if you’re married. I could be your... your girlfriend. Your baby mama if you want. I just want to be with you, Mason."

Mason felt disgusted. "Diana, stop."

"Why? Because of that skinny little nobody you married?" Diana’s voice turned nasty. "I’ve seen the pictures in the papers. She’s nothing special. Too thin, no curves, probably doesn’t even know how to dress properly."

Mason’s hands clenched into fists under the table. "Don’t talk about my wife."

"Why not? It’s the truth." Diana stood up and moved around the table, sliding into the seat next to Mason. "Look at me, Mason. Really look at me."

She pressed closer to him, her hand touching his arm. Mason jerked away, but Diana persisted.

"I have the perfect body," she said, running her hands over her curves. "I spent a fortune making sure everything was exactly right. I’m everything she’s not - beautiful, sophisticated, from the right family. We belong together."

Mason stood up abruptly, his chair scraping against the floor. "Sarah is perfect exactly as she is. She’s okay for me." he said, his voice cold and angry. "She’s natural and real, not like you with your fake everything."

Diana’s face turned red with anger. "Fake? How dare you—"

"Your chest, your lips, probably your nose too," Mason said harshly. "You’re so desperate to be perfect that you turned yourself into a plastic doll."

Diana gasped, her hand flying to her face. "You bastard! How can you say that to me?"

"Because it’s true," Mason said. "And because I’m tired of pretending to be polite when you won’t take no for an answer."

Diana stood up, her eyes blazing with fury. "You’ll regret this, Mason Liu. You’ll regret choosing that pathetic little—"

Mason’s phone rang, interrupting her. He looked at the screen and saw Derek’s name. Something in his gut told him to answer immediately.

"Derek, what is it?" Mason said, turning away from Diana.

"Boss, there’s been an accident," Derek’s voice was urgent. "Sarah was hurt. She’s at Wuhan General Hospital."

Mason felt the world stop around him. "What? How badly is she hurt?"

"I don’t know all the details yet. A car accident. She hit her head. She’s conscious, but they’re running tests."

Mason was already moving toward the exit. "I’m on my way."

"Mason, wait—" Diana called after him, but he was already gone.

Outside the restaurant, James was waiting by the black Mercedes.

"Hospital," Mason said, getting into the car. "Wuhan General. Fast."

James nodded and pulled into traffic. Mason sat in the back seat, his hands clenched so tightly that his knuckles were white. On the outside, he looked calm and controlled, but inside he was panicking.

Sarah was hurt. She had been in an accident. The thought of losing her made his chest feel tight and painful in a way he had never experienced before.

The drive to the hospital felt like it took forever, even though James was driving as fast as he safely could. Mason stared out the window at the city lights, his mind racing with worst-case scenarios.

When they finally arrived at the hospital, he walked through the front doors with his usual confident stride. The staff immediately recognized him.

"Mr. Liu," the head nurse said, rushing over to him. "How can we help you?"

"My wife," Mason said simply. "Sarah Liu. She was brought in after a car accident."

The nurse’s eyes widened slightly. Most people had never actually seen Mason’s wife, and the staff was curious about the woman who had managed to marry the untouchable Mason Liu.

"Of course, sir. She’s in room 314. Third floor. The elevator is right over there."

Mason didn’t wait for more information. He headed straight for the elevator, his heart pounding harder with each floor they passed.

When the elevator doors opened on the third floor, Mason walked quickly down the hallway, checking room numbers. 312, 313, 314.

He pushed open the door to room 314 and immediately saw Sarah sitting on the hospital bed. She had a small bandage on her forehead, and she looked pale and tired.

But what made Mason’s jaw clench was the sight of that same man from the restaurant - Silas - sitting in the chair next to her bed, his hand gently touching her forehead near the bandage.

Mason moved without thinking, his hand pushing Silas’s away from Sarah’s face.

"Don’t touch her," Mason said, his voice low and dangerous.

Silas jerked back, startled. He looked up at Mason, and his eyes widened in complete shock.

Mason ignored Silas and immediately squatted down in front of Sarah’s bed, his eyes searching her face with worry.

"How badly are you hurt?" Mason asked, his voice soft and concerned. "Are you in pain?"

Sarah blinked at him in surprise. "Mason? What are you doing here?"

"Derek told me about the accident," Mason said, his hands hovering near her face like he wanted to touch her but wasn’t sure if he should. "I came as soon as I heard."

Silas was staring at both of them in complete confusion. He recognized Mason Liu immediately - everyone in Wuhan knew that face. The richest man in the city, the head of Liu Enterprise, the man whose business deals made front-page news.

But what was he doing here? And why was he looking at Sarah like she was the most important person in the world?

"Sarah," Silas said slowly, his voice filled with disbelief. "Do you know who this is?"

Sarah looked between Mason and Silas, seeing the confusion and shock on Silas’s face. She realized that she was about to be forced into explaining things she wasn’t ready to explain.

"Silas, I—" Sarah started.

"This is Mason Liu," Silas said, his voice getting louder. "THE Mason Liu. The richest man in Wuhan. Sarah, how do you know him?"

Mason stood up and turned to face Silas, his expression cold and territorial. "Who are you?"

"I’m Silas Li," Silas said, also standing up. "Sarah’s friend. I’m the one who brought her to the hospital after the accident."

"Friend," Mason repeated, his voice making it clear that he didn’t believe that was all Silas was.

"Yes, friend," Silas said, his own voice getting defensive. "I’ve known Sarah since we were children. We recently reconnected."

Mason’s eyes narrowed. So this was childhood history. That explained the familiarity, the way Silas had known exactly how to take care of Sarah.

"You caused this accident, what right do you have to be here? I could have you jailed for almost killing my wife." Mason didn’t beat around the bush.

Both Sarah and Silas’s eyes widened in shock.

Sarah’s eyes went wide in shock because she hadn’t told Silas that Mason was her husband. The husband she talked about.

And Silas had his eyes wide open because Mason Liu was actually Sarah’s husband.

It was the most unpredictable thing that happened in Silas’s life.
