Chapter 83: Rash decision (2)
Gabriel returned to his father’s home expecting good news about his mother’s state. She might be human, but Gabriel knew his mother was strong enough to pull through something like this. Her story in this world wasn’t written to come to an end like this.
When Gabriel entered the home, it was almost in the same state as he had left it but something was off.
The servants avoided his gaze as if something tragic had happened. The further he walked into the home, Gabriel realised it wasn’t as he left it. The mood had changed.
This caused Gabriel to rush to see Lucinda.
Before he could enter the room, Gabriel bumped into Cassandra. Her teary eyes and heartbroken appearance gave away his fears were true.
Gabriel tried not to pay attention to the noises in the home as then he would have to acknowledge he couldn’t hear his mother breathing anymore. It had been faint earlier but at least he had heard it.
Now there was silence with only the doctor or servants moving around.
"Gabriel," Cassandra cried. "I don’t know why. He just came in and bit her.’
"What?" Gabriel asked, his voice carrying to the other rooms since he was loud. "Who bit her?"
Gabriel stormed into the room to check on his mother before Cassandra could answer him.
Cassandra followed Gabriel inside since she knew he would need to be comforted. "Your mother woke for a moment but then stopped breathing. Y-Your father came in to get her to open her eyes again and when she didn’t, he bit her."
Gabriel made his mother sit up. He couldn’t ignore that there weren’t any signs of life from the woman he held in his arms. He couldn’t hear her heart beating or feel her body move as she breathed.
"Why?" Gabriel turned his attention to the panicking doctor. "Why the hell would he bite her?"
Gabriel knew and his father should know as well that mixed-bloods couldn’t turn anyone into vampires. It was the purebloods who could do it.
The mixed-bloods who were determined to give turning humans a try created monsters who lost themselves and had to be killed. His mother was never going to live long even if she survived the bite since men from the palace would have come to kill her.
"I’m sorry," Cassandra cried, her right hand covering her mouth. "I should have stopped him. You must go look at your father. He has been alone since he bit her. I don’t know what to do."
Gabriel couldn’t let go of his mother. Part of it felt like his fault since he left her to find her way home and did not allow her to come to his home. Had he allowed her to come to his home she would still be alive.
Gabriel wasn’t ready to be without his mother. There wasn’t anyone more supportive of or praised him than his mother. She always knew he would be someone great.
Cassandra looked at Watson. A doctor wasn’t needed here anymore when Lucinda was dead. "Thank you for the time you have spent here to help us. I will escort you out. He needs time with his mother."
Watson nodded his head, desperate to get out of the home. George was already acting like a madman and with Gabriel returning too late to hold his mother one more time before she passed, he knew it wasn’t going to be good from here on out.
Cassandra quietly escorted Watson out. She needed a break from acting like she cared about Lucinda’s death. ’Good riddance,’ she thought.
Cassandra couldn’t resist it and ended up covering Lucinda’s face when she woke up to hide any involvement Bryce might have had in her attack. It caught her off guard to hear George coming and then to see him bite Lucinda.
’What was he thinking?’ Cassandra wondered. It was well-known that his bite would have sent Lucinda mad and then she would be killed by order of the king.
It disgusted Cassandra by how fast vampires wanted to bite innocent people. Why was it always the first thing they could think of?
Mandy approached Cassandra to offer her a handkerchief to wipe her tears.
Cassandra stared at the handkerchief. Did she need it? Had she managed to force that many tears? She thought of dropping to the floor and crying at Gabriel’s feet when he arrived but she couldn’t force herself to. Inside, Cassandra wanted to celebrate Lucinda’s death.
Cassandra accepted the handkerchief to wipe her face with so she could hide her smile. It was a good day for her but there would be more tears she needed to force.
’Will he get caught?’ Cassandra thought, worried about Bryce.
A strange man was sent from court to look at Lucinda and it looked as though he had smelled her body. Cassandra never heard of vampires having the ability to track like that after so much time had passed.
Cassandra handed the handkerchief back to her maid when she was done.
"I am sorry," Watson apologised for the tragedy the family had to face today. It was unfortunate there wasn’t anything he could do to help the lady and it surprised him that the Valors had not called upon vampires since they might have had the solution.
Cassandra smiled as she bid Watson goodbye. Seeing the doctor be so hopeless, Cassandra thought back to something she faced in her past.
Cassandra knew Lucinda’s attacker had been human but it was at times like this that the town should see how much vampires were a problem. Humans couldn’t survive attacks so they didn’t belong living amongst vampires who treated them like animals.
Cassandra turned to return to Gabriel’s side but before she reached him, she noticed a maid carrying a bottle of wine she had never seen before. "Is it blood for his father?"
Mandy inspected the bottle Cassandra was curious about. "It is wine made from special berries. It is enjoyed mostly by pureblood since it is so strong. For a lady like you, it will make you drunk quickly."
Cassandra didn’t have any interest in consuming it but if it was something all the purebloods in town used then it was worth her time to get a lot of this wine. "That is good to know. We should keep that wine for the purebloods. Gabriel?"
Cassandra stopped walking when she noticed Gabriel standing at the top of the stairs. "You can be with her as long as you want or are you looking to find your father?"
Gabriel walked down the stairs to reach Cassandra. "If I go to see my father now then I might end up killing him and it isn’t something my mother would want. I need you right now. You are the one thing keeping me sane."
Gabriel wanted to squeeze his mother tight and never let off of her while another part of him just wanted to cry but his body felt numb. It did not feel like his mother was gone.
Cassandra continued to walk to meet Gabriel halfway. "I am here for you. I will do anything for you. It is not fair she was taken from us like this. Taken from you. She made me feel what it is like to have a mother again. I don’t know what I would do without her. There is much I want to say."
Gabriel embraced Cassandra, allowing her to cry on his shoulder. She understood him most and shared what he felt concerning his mother. He also wanted to cry but had to keep himself composed since there was much to do now.
"Would you do anything for me, Cassandra?" Gabriel asked out of the blue. His eyes weren’t on Cassandra but at the open front door yet to be closed behind the doctor.
"I would do anything for you," Cassandra replied.
"Then, would you become a vampire for me?" Gabriel asked. Only then could he avoid something like this happening again. He could not lose Cassandra too.
Cassandra was lucky her head rested on his shoulder so he did not see her reaction. Was he mad? Why would she want to become one of those creatures?
Instead of turning him down now to upset him, Cassandra smiled when she looked up at Gabriel. "I would consider it but for now, we must focus on your mother. We must still be at her side and we can speak of what you want another day."
Gabriel hugged Cassandra. Strangely, she was the one who was most composed.
He truly did not know what he would do without her.
