Chapter 79: Accusations (4)

"At least allow me to talk with your wife. I won’t claim her as the one behind this but I must question her since her name was mentioned. You are not a stranger to killing anyone you do not like-"

"Respectfully," Xavier cut Eugene off. "Do not put these assumptions you have of me on my wife. She is different from me and you must be careful going around saying I kill people I do not like. It is hurtful."

Eugene wasn’t buying the act. "Many of the cases I have taken end up with me at your gates. It shouldn’t be hurtful when it is true. I will be gentle with your wife since she is a lady. I would be the only one to enter if you allow it."

Eugene added, "If I do not solve this now then he will come again and go around speaking of your wife harming his mother. I want to move quickly so an innocent woman isn’t accused of what someone else did."

"Open the gates," Xavier ordered the guards. "Only you are to enter. If he hasn’t left and sneaks upon my land, I will kill him."

"I understand," Eugene replied. He could not do anything if Gabriel ignored his order to return home. "I wouldn’t get in your way then."

Eugene entered the gates after they were opened. "I have tried to get in here for years and this is how I enter."

"Hopefully, you will exit," Xavier responded, leading the way to Selene.

From where Xavier stood, he could see Selene standing at the front door. "If you have spoiled the good mood my estate was in then I might consider making you the town’s next victim."

"A threat?" Eugene laughed instead of being afraid. "I must have interrupted your time with your wife. I would say forgive me but I know your petty ways would not care for it. While I am here, I will congratulate you on your marriage."

"Don’t congratulate me on anything when you have come to question my wife. You should be experienced enough to stop someone with accusations which has no proof because this town doesn’t like to listen. They will speak of these accusations and ignore the truth she is innocent," said Xavier.

Eugene sighed. "I know that. I wanted him to be quiet but you have to understand that his mother was injured. He will not be able to control his anger."

"It is unfortunate what happened to his mother but when he speaks about my wife, I cannot care about what his family is dealing with. You should work fast to clear this up. Selene," Xavier walked ahead of Eugene. "This is Eugene, one of the town guards."

Selene reached out to hold Xavier’s hand after he offered it. "It is nice to meet you," she greeted Eugene. "Why have you come?"

"Well," Eugene cleared his throat. Was this the furthest Xavier was going to allow him to stand? "There was an attack on a human named Lucinda Valor. Given your last marriage, you should know who she is. Your name has come up by the farmer who took her to her home."

Eugene studied Selene’s face and noticed she wasn’t concerned for Lucinda but he didn’t think too much of it to say she was guilty since it was expected of her to not like Lucinda.

"My name came up? Why would it? I saw Lucinda on my outing around the market today and was sure to get away from her before she caused trouble. If you are here to ask if I harmed her then I am afraid you will be disappointed," said Selene.

"It was worth questioning you since your name was mentioned. I have not come to take you anywhere but is it possible someone might have attacked her on your behalf for anything she said about you?" Eugene asked.

Selene might not not have done it but she could have given the order.

"No. You may return to the market where we spoke briefly and ask the workers there about what happened," Selene replied, ready to do what was needed to prove her innocence.

"I am sure they will tell you that I ignored what was said by Lucinda. We did not get along but that doesn’t mean I wanted her dead. I left the market and came right home. You can ask those who accompanied me," Selene said, angry that she was pulled into this.

Selene didn’t think her talk with Lucinda was so bad that it should have been her name said after Lucinda was attacked. Was it due to Lucas pulling the sword out on Lucinda? It was what any guard would do to protect who they were accompanying.

"I have much to deal with already and I would not like to hear that I hurt someone I did not. If that was Gabriel who left a moment ago, I would like him to stay away from me," said Selene.

"I will keep him away from you and I am certain Lord Blackthorn will help with that as well. As of right now, the lady has not woken up. This can all be settled if she wakes and tells us who attacks us. From the description of her wounds, this seemed to be done by a human," Eugene shared.

It was the one thing Eugene found odd since purebloods wouldn’t hire humans. They were more keen on hiring vampires to carry out their work. Even if Selene was trying to throw them off by hiring a vampire, why wasn’t Lucinda killed instead of left to be found and saved by someone?

"I do not know any humans and I did not go looking for any today. I did the business I intended to do and returned to the estate. I cannot be the one blamed for anything that will happen with that family. My maid was killed by his hand and I have another who witnessed it. Will you solve that?" Selene asked but she knew he wouldn’t.

"If that is all you needed to know then my wife can go back inside now. I will send for the servants who were with her today. Selene, tell Harold to bring everyone who went with you today. It will be fine," Xavier said, kissing her hand to calm her.

Selene didn’t want to leave yet since she brought this to Xavier’s doors but since there wasn’t anything she could do now, she left it to Xavier.

Xavier watched Selene leave knowing she would think about this for the rest of the day. "I would know if my wife killed anyone and she did not. A woman who controlled her anger when her husband killed her maid she adored would not lose herself today to kill his mother."

"I do not think it is your wife from what I have heard so far but I am curious why her name was said. The answer lies with Lucinda. I need her to wake to tell the story even if it is only for a moment. I have my best man going there to pick up any scents on her. We will solve this," Eugene promised.

Eugene wanted to solve it before Gabriel either did something foolish or spoke of Selene being the one behind this when they had not gathered proof it was her. Eugene also wanted to stop it soon since Xavier seemed like he was about to be out for blood and it would be Gabriel’s blood.

The king would not like to hear these two men were fighting.
