Chapter 77: Accusations (2)
The ride to his parents’ home felt longer than usual for Gabriel. He wanted to go straight to Selene and take her head but first, he needed to see his mother’s state. He could not lose his mother like this.
In moments like this, Gabriel wished his mother and Cassandra were both vampires. Lucinda would heal slowly but it was better than bearing the pain she felt now. Human lives were too easy to end.
Cassandra held Gabriel’s hand for all of the ride to see Lucinda. She secretly hoped that by the time they reached his family home, Lucinda was dead and had not shared much of Bryce’s appearance.
Cassandra was careful about what she said now since Gabriel looked as though he would kill anyone who said something he didn’t like.
When the carriage stopped at his parents’ home, Gabriel exited without waiting for Cassandra. The front door was wide open, and he could hear the servants panicking as they ran around.
"Where is she?" Gabriel yelled as he entered the home. The overwhelming smell of blood caught his attention, making him even more furious.
"She is here," said George Valor, Gabriel’s father. "I want that woman dead for what she did. I want her dead!"
Gabriel walked by his father to get to his mother who laid on the bed. Her eyes weren’t open as a doctor still tended to her. Gabriel regretted not taking her home and allowing her to find her own way.
"Mother," Gabriel got down on his knees beside the bed. "I am here, mother. How long has she been asleep?"
"Since she arrived. The farmer said she had been awake for most of the ride but she fell unconscious by the gates. She lost a lot of blood, Gabriel. What they did to her leg was cruel. They even stabbed her. This is the work of someone who hated her and wanted her dead," George said, his anger growing the more he looked at Lucinda.
George was both angry and annoyed. Angry that someone was so bold to harm his wife and annoyed that her body was so weak to become like this.
"Will she survive this?" Gabriel asked the doctor.
"It will be hard-"
"She will," George spoke over the doctor. "She will not die like this."
George couldn’t have Lucinda spoil the light on their family like this. The town was to be celebrating what Gabriel had done, not mourning for Lucinda. Why would she have travelled alone when all this attention was on her?
Gabriel needed his father to be careful with what he said. "I’m sure she can hear us so you should be encouraging her to wake up. Did the farmer say the name Selene?"
"He did. That woman tried to kill your mother. You must do something about her. I don’t care who she is married to," said George. "The town guards should be able to deal with her."
Gabriel held his mother’s hand, taking in her touch for a moment in case the worst might happen when he was away. "Save her. I will pay you handsomely if you save her," he told the doctor.
Gabriel stood up, ready to leave for the Blackthorn estate. "Father, send for the town guards to meet me at the Blackthorn estate and take care of Cassandra in my absence. She has come to help take care of my mother. I trust you will keep her safe."
George eyed the beautiful young woman who was about to become his family. The only thing he disliked about her was the fact she wasn’t a vampire. Lucinda was the one excited about Gabriel marrying a human but he did not like it.
Gabriel was once married to a pureblood so why did he make so many steps back?
Cassandra did not enjoy George’s gaze as always. She noticed from the time they were introduced that he was not impressed yet. Again, Cassandra wondered how he ended up with Lucinda.
Cassandra stepped forward to enter the room. "I will do my best to take care of your wife who I see as my mother. I am sure she will wake up. You’ve dealt with a lot so allow me to take over."
"What I want is to see that whore dead," George replied, storming off to find something to drink.
Cassandra stepped to Gabriel as he prepared to leave. "Promise me you will deal with her and come home to me. Come home to your mother since she will want to see you when she wakes."
Gabriel raised Cassandra’s hand to kiss it for good luck. "I will. Remember to send for the town guards. I will send someone to the palace to inform the king about this. This time, he will have to step in to do something about Lord Blackthorn."
If the king did nothing then it would only show favouritism or spark rumours that he was afraid of Xavier.
Gabriel did not fear Xavier now since this concerned his mother. He didn’t care if it would be the king he needed to go after. No one could hurt his mother and get away with it.
To think he had considered finding a place in his home for Selene once Xavier was done with her. She would have a far worse ending than he planned before.
Cassandra watched Gabriel leave, taking along a few servants with him. She truly hoped that he would not die today since he was starting to achieve great things now.
Once Gabriel was out of sight, Cassandra turned her attention to Lucinda. Had Lucinda not bothered her then she wouldn’t have ended up like this. She doubted this was Selene’s doing since the job was not finished. Why would Selene not order for the job to be done with?
Cassandra entered the room and took a seat as the doctor finished tending to Lucinda. "Will she survive the night?"
Watson, the doctor, looked at the young woman. "It is hard to say. I’ve bandaged her wounds but she was left to bleed out for a while. It is up to the lady to put up a fight to survive the night. It is an important time when the family should be at her side."
"Well, the men are too angry to be here so I will be at her side to take care of her. It looks like you have stopped the bleeding and done your part so if you need a moment, I will watch over her," Cassandra offered.
"I would like to have a word with her husband. I won’t be gone long," said Watson.
Cassandra smiled as the doctor made his way out. Her maid Mandy came to stand beside her and she could just tell Mandy did not enjoy the sight before her.
Cassandra was focused on Lucinda. Now Lucinda had the attention she always sought after but she wasn’t awake to enjoy it.
It was tempting to send Mandy away and get rid of Lucinda now but she was already suffering so much that Cassandra decided to leave her. Lucinda might not be alive by the end of the day.
It was about time Cassandra was freed from having to deal with Lucinda.
