Chapter 74: Bending rules (3)
Camilla waited for Nathaniel to leave to have a word with Ragnar. "Why don’t we just wake father? If this is so important, it is worth disturbing his sleep. Why do we have to stand around and watch Nathaniel act like he is one of the elders? He is old but he doesn’t have that power."
"I would not like to deal with the consequences of waking father and Nathaniel most likely wants to avoid it because father adored Xavier. We should do nothing. Don’t get too involved so Nathaniel cannot blame us," said Ragnar.
"I thought you weren’t noticing he might say it is our fault when it is his son. I must admit that I don’t care who Xavier has married. I’ve used all my anger disliking Josephine so I don’t have it in me now. We couldn’t get him to marry before so isn’t it good that he has a wife?" Camilla asked, not understanding the need to fight.
Camilla continued, "I’m sure his children with his wife will be strong. He married a pureblood after all. Their obsession with creating children with the other four families must stop. It will not be good if Xavier were to turn on us since he has many followers outside the family."
"I am aware but you know how stubborn Nathaniel is. I agree with Xavier that if it was so important, Nathaniel should have been careful with who he married and how many children he had. Now they question who I will settle with," Ragnar said, annoyed by the attention on him.
Camilla walked around the room admiring the old portraits. "Well, I am lucky to not be in their plans. Who will want to marry a pureblood without fangs? I am starting to think about whose side I want to be on. Do I kill Xavier’s wife and have him end my life or take his side?"
Ragnar was surprised to hear Camilla say this. "You are not afraid I might tell Nathaniel about this?"
Camilla laughed. "As if you haven’t been careful to not upset Xavier. That plan of giving his wife a chance was to make you look good to Xavier while not upsetting Nathaniel. You are playing the two sides well. I trust my nephew more than I trust my brother."
Camilla never had an issue knowing what Xavier felt but Nathaniel was always so secretive.
"I know it was Nathaniel’s idea to send me away. You couldn’t have thought I would just come back to do as he wanted. We should think about the future as Nathaniel says. Whose side would it benefit me to be on? That is something I am deciding," Camilla informed Ragnar. "I have places to be," she excused herself.
"Do not kill anyone," Ragnar advised Camilla. It wasn’t surprising she would turn on Nathaniel after their history but he didn’t think it would come so soon.
Just as Camilla was deciding who to be loyal to, Ragnar started to think of who would benefit him most. If Xavier’s child were to possess his power then all talk about Selene would be forgotten and Nathaniel would not be able to get close to Xavier after all he did.
"I should have stayed home," Ragnar muttered.
Then he wouldn’t be caught up in this mess.
Back at the estate, Selene returned safely from her outing. There wasn’t anyone to approach her after Lucinda which might be due to the guards she walked with.
Selene entered the front doors as the maids came out to take her things from the carriage.
"Harold, has he returned yet?" Selene asked, looking around for Xavier. She was worried about his talk with his father.
"Lord Blackthorn has not returned yet but I am sure he can’t be far behind you. Did your trip go well?" Harold asked.
"It did. There was a crowd but since it was my first appearance as his wife, it was expected. I’m sure it will get better after they lose interest in me. There is a sword among my things so the maids should be careful with it," Selene informed Harold. "I will go ahead with Agnes to my room."
"I will have the maids send up everything and put it away right now. As well as send up some blood for you. There were more invitations sent for you that I have placed in your room. I will be near if you need anything else," said Harold.
Selene thanked Harold and made her way up to her room. "More invitations already."
"That is wonderful. They are all curious about you," said Agnes.
"That is not a good thing. I will look through them for who I might be able to make friends with and throw away the others. Now is the time for us to be cautious by paying close attention to how everyone around us acts. I will need your eyes at times," Selene said since Agnes would get close to the servants of these ladies.
"I will do what you need," Agnes promised. "I can ask the other maids about any of the ladies to find out what their relationship was like with the lord. Many of them have friends or family serving other purebloods."
"I don’t need to find out about his relationship with anyone from you. I trust that he will give me a warning about them. You’ve been with me all morning so you need time to rest. I will sit in my room for a bit and send someone for you if I need you," Selene told Agnes.
Agnes wasn’t tired but she followed what Selene wanted and left her side.
Selene returned to her room alone and searched for the invitations Harold spoke of. She might not have attended many gatherings in the last year but she knew about most of the pureblood women around the town.
Selene had attended the same parties as them in the past and had friendships up until what happened with her family. Knowing how quickly they would turn their backs on her, Selene set aside each invitation from her old friends.
There would never be any second chances for a friend who turned their back on her.
Thinking of old friends, her mind went back to Fiona. She had to try once more to get Fiona from Oliver’s side and if it didn’t work, their friendship would unfortunately have to stop. The meeting in secret could not go on for much longer though she once thought it was enough.
"I cannot think of this now," Selene muttered.
Instead of her friendship, Selene had to think of how she would address what Xavier said to her. This was one of the few times Selene felt like she did not have an answer. It was confusing because she could simply say she was not ready to have him try courting her but she couldn’t get it out.
Did she want Xavier to do his best to court her?
If only that moment had not happened she wouldn’t be so bothered about it. Selene knew Xavier was most likely not overthinking it like she was doing so she wanted to be calm. It wasn’t as if he said he loved her which would have scared her.
"You mustn’t overreact," Selene said to herself.
