Chapter 69: Trouble in the market (2)
Cassandra carefully approached the man who shouldn’t be near her or in town. What was he thinking being so out in the open like this and walking so close to her?
"Look at you. You’ve turned yourself into a lady fast."
Cassandra grabbed his hand and pulled him out of sight before someone could see them. He was lucky all attention was on Selene at the moment. "What are you doing, Bryce?"
"I wanted to see that you were in safe hands and by the looks of it you are. Though for a second there you looked like you wanted to kill the woman beside you," said Bryce.
Cassandra couldn’t deny it since Lucinda was a headache. ’That is his mother. You know we can’t talk like this. There are vampires all around."
Bryce looked around the town he was recently getting used to. "I know. That’s why I have something to keep us safe," he showed a small stone. "This little thing was expensive even though it will wear off soon."
Cassandra didn’t trust the magic of witches to protect them. "Get out of sight and don’t follow me. Don’t speak of anything now."
It would be all over for her if anything were to be heard.
"I am not a fool, Cassandra. I only want to ask if it is all going to plan. You have not forgotten why you left, right?"
"I have not," Cassandra replied, annoyed he would speak of this now. "If you have been watching me since I arrived, you would see I am busy preparing for my wedding. That woman walked away sooner than I thought she would."
"She wasn’t to leave, Cassandra. You had a pureblood right there in your hands. You could have-"
"Enough," Cassandra ordered Bryce. "Go before I tell him about what you have done today. If you want to be helpful, do something about that woman. She is getting in my way by constantly being near."
Bryce wondered if he had missed her with someone else since the only woman he saw Cassandra with was Lucinda. "You are not talking about his mother, are you? We don’t harm humans."
"Some need to be harmed for our plans to work. If you cannot do it, I will tell him to send someone else. Now, do not follow me," Cassandra said, hurrying to get away from Bryce.
Cassandra wished it wasn’t someone would create trouble for her. They had much to do in this town so they had to be smart. If one of them could take care of Lucinda then it would be much easier for her to do what she was sent to.
Away from where Cassandra went to hide from Lucinda, Selene kept herself busy by looking for the shoes she would need.
It was easy to not acknowledge the gazes of the people around her but it was a pain for Selene to not hear what was said. Covering her ears wouldn’t work because of her good hearing.
"Should I send them away?" Lucas asked, ready to pull out his weapon.
"No," Selene stopped him. "I’m sure it will get better soon. Are all of Xavier’s followers quick to kill or hurt someone?"
"If it is necessary, yes," Lucas replied. "I have promised that I will protect you and I will do so by any means necessary."
While her shoes were being placed in boxes, Selene decided to get to know more about Lucas. "I don’t intend to do anything bad but if I were to ask you to do something for me, would you run right away to inform my husband? I know Harold reports to him."
Lucas was uncertain of what he would do since it depended on what she was doing. "I am loyal to Lord Blackthorn and would never keep anything from him but he has said I am now to follow you. Unless it were to hurt him, I would keep your secret."
"I don’t have anything to keep from my husband but it is good to know. Speaking of him, I have not decided what to get him. What do you get from a man who has everything?" Selene wondered.
"Does he truly have everything?" Agnes asked.
"It appears that way. It wouldn’t be hard for him to get his hands on what he doesn’t have. I will need to go with the suggestion of a weapon. Or as a joke get him another coffin since he put his away. He did not need to get rid of it for me," said Selene.
’She was the reason?’ Lucas thought. He assumed it had been Josephine’s doing since Xavier was getting married.
Lucas looked away from Selene when he heard the door open and another woman entered. He wondered if this woman was here to get shoes or act like she was just to get closer to Selene.
For a town that labelled Selene a traitor and most likely enjoyed the recent talk of her previous husband having a human lover, they were quite interested in her for other reasons now. Was everything forgotten now that she might be useful if they were to get close?
Lucinda watched from the sidelines as the owner and her worker moved fast to show Selene the finest shoes in the shop which were usually reserved for important ladies to get their hands on first.
It wasn’t long since news of Selene’s second marriage yet she was already flaunting the new status and wealth she attained. It was just as Lucinda expected Selene would be.
Agnes noticed Lucinda drawing closer and when she leaned to whisper the trouble which lingered near to Selene, it turned out Selene was already aware of who had entered.
Selene knew it wouldn’t be long before someone from that household approached her again. All she needed to do was pay them dust.
"I know your maid has informed you of my presence yet you wouldn’t greet me. I treated you well when you were my son’s wife and this is how you repay?" Lucinda asked, her voice intentionally loud for the spectators outside to hear.
It was time the town knew what she had to put up with.
"I wasn’t the one who brought a woman into your marriage yet you lashed out at me? I treated you like you were my daughter. When we see each other around the town, you should be able to greet me," said Lucinda.
Selene didn’t know who had filled Lucinda’s head for her to think she always needed to be acknowledged or be the centre of attention.
Selene focused on the shoes she needed and then she would be ready to go. She had played this game with Lucinda before to know Lucinda would only get louder the more they spoke.
Selene could only laugh at what was said by Lucinda. How could a woman who hated vampires treat her like a daughter? After all this time, Selene only wanted to ask Lucinda if she deep down hated her son and husband as well.
"I am ready to go," Selene informed Lucas.
Lucinda could not believe Selene’s attitude. Just because she was married to a lord did not mean Selene could act this way. The town had not forgotten about the Harrisons so it was best Selene kept out of sight.
"You!" Lucinda approached Selene but a large man blocked her path.
"Do not touch the lady," Lucas said, his hands itching to snap the woman’s neck. His patience was thin now that he knew exactly who this woman was.
