Betrayed By The Hero, Loved By The Lord -
Chapter 170: Regret (2)
Chapter 170: Regret (2)
Gabriel hated that the king no longer accepted his request for a private talk. Even when he managed to get a glimpse of the king in the palace, the servants around the king claimed Darius was too busy even though Gabriel knew he wasn’t.
What happened to the king helping him to rise above Xavier?
Has Darius changed his mind?
Gabriel hated to think that he would soon be forgotten with the king not acknowledging him. All the celebrations for the war were dying down so if Gabriel didn’t do something grand soon, he feared he would be a forgotten hero.
Gabriel failed to make connections in the palace since he didn’t appear to be a man useful to others. Had Darius given him a bit of attention then the other men in the palace might think it was worth getting close to Gabriel.
Gabriel struck the target again, this time shattering it. "I’m still stuck," he grumbled.
The king gave him money which helped to afford this new status Gabriel thought he had and the job in the court paid a decent amount but Gabriel wanted to be well recognised in the palace.
"No," Gabriel shook his head. "The kingdom should speak my name. I need another war to win."
Gabriel wanted to remind everyone he was their hero. They could not ignore him if he brought the kingdom two victories.
The issue was that Gabriel had not heard of any more trouble for the king to send out his soldiers.
"The attacks," Gabriel remembered.
The town guards were failing to find the humans responsible for the attacks. If he could somehow capture all the humans behind it then the king should reward him again.
When that time came, Gabriel wanted a better position than he had now. Instead of working in the palace, he wanted to be a lord. It was the only title fitting for him.
Gabriel smiled as he imagined the result of his plan. He would be the first mixed-blood to hold a title reserved for only purebloods. His peers would flock to him then.
"Where can I find those bastards?" Gabriel wondered, thinking about the humans.
He had ignored the trouble they were causing but now he was curious about everything said so far.
Gabriel turned around to look at where Cassandra had gone back inside. It would be easy to use her to speak to other humans to find out any clues about the attack but he knew she would be too scared to get involved.
"What does she do throughout the day?" Gabriel asked himself.
Cassandra had yet to learn how to run their home. It was a simple task considering she had servants at her fingertips to carry out her orders and a butler to show what was expected of the lady of the house but Cassandra hadn’t fallen into that role.
Their home seemed to be on a downward spiral since-
Gabriel frowned.
Gabriel hated to admit that since Selene left nothing seemed to be in order here. He gave Cassandra grace since she was far from home and getting used to her new life here but he could only wait so long.
Cassandra was doing her best but soon her best would not be good enough. Gabriel did his part by providing so Cassandra needed to do her part.
"She needs someone to teach her," Gabriel decided.
Had the incident with Selene’s maid not happened then he could have had Selene teach Cassandra all that she knew before she left.
Or, maybe Selene shouldn’t have left.
Selene had the status of a pureblood even though her family name was ruined. Her name was still of some use for her to get her hands on a man like Xavier.
Gabriel doubted it now that Selene had seduced Xavier. A woman like Selene could not seduce anyone when she had a man like Gabriel around and failed to seduce him.
It would have worked well for him if he had a pureblood for a wife instead of a human. Then, he wouldn’t be the joke of every conversation.
"You fool. Don’t think about the woman who killed your mother," Gabriel scolded himself.
He should never forget what happened to his mother.
"Gabriel!" He heard Cassandra call out to him. "There is a guard at the door to speak with you."
Gabriel was puzzled as to why a guard would be here but then he thought about his mother. Hopefully, there was some news about who attacked her. It was high time the ones behind the attack were killed.
Gabriel dropped his sword and went straight to the door. "Leave us, Cassandra."
"Shouldn’t I-"
"Leave us," Gabriel repeated his order. What business would she have hearing what needed to be said?
Cassandra would only worry herself and Gabriel did not have time for it.
Cassandra stood back, allowing Gabriel to go alone. He had another thing coming his way if he would continue to be like this.
Where was the man who was smitten with her? Who treated her like she was the most delicate thing in the world. Was he finally showing his true colours now?
Gabriel continued to the door and found Eugene standing there. "I hope you have found good news about my mother."
"I have not," Eugene replied. "We haven’t found anyone matching the appearance the farmer gave. I am here to talk about another matter. The one concerning the maid you killed."
Gabriel frowned. "Selene’s maid? Well, I don’t see how that is important. She attacked my wife so I killed her. What would you have me do? Your time is more useful finding who attacked my mother."
"I am doing both. We have plenty of men to cover both cases but I am here to inform you that this matter will also be looked into. Unfortunately, Cassandra wasn’t your wife then and you killed a vampire over an accusation-"
"She harmed the woman I loved in my home. I was well within my right to kill her. This is my land she stood on when she committed the act," Gabriel argued.
"Well, there is another small issue. You are free to do as you please when you own the land but this land is under your father’s name. The home also falls under it. Since it isn’t your land and it was a vampire you killed, I need to know what proof you had and speak to your father on how to handle this," Eugene explained.
Gabriel laughed. "This home and land was given to me by my father."
"Yes, I am well aware that he allowed you to live here. Perhaps you misunderstood what he was letting you do. He never placed ownership into your hands. So, should you ever disagree with your father, he can send you away," said Eugene.
The court records Eugene got his hands on showed what he said.
Gabriel didn’t believe this since his father said out of his mouth that this land and home had been passed onto him. Now that they weren’t on the best of terms because of how his father dealt with his mother in her final moments, none of it wasn’t in his name?
"I don’t have time for any of your made-up stories. Vampires kill each other all the time. You allow Xavier to get away with it because you’re too useless to find proof. Instead of coming to me about a maid I have every right to kill, find out what happened to my mother," Gabriel instructed Eugene.
Eugene confirmed now that he hated the man standing in front of him. "Unfortunately for you, your ex-wife isn’t going to drop what happened here. I need to speak to your wife to know what happened to see if you were within your rights and then I will go to your father."
What Xavier said about the guards not looking at what happened with Selene’s maid struck a nerve with Eugene. He didn’t like that he had easily dismissed what happened here. Eugene didn’t want to be the kind of guard to let someone die and not look into it.
