Chapter 168: Sending a message (3)

By now, Selene had gotten up from the ground since she wasn’t injured. She didn’t intend to run out to stop Xavier from killing the stranger following them but worried about the town guards coming to them again.

Selene was tired of hearing the town guards at the gates. She didn’t dislike that her husband caught the attention of the town guards but she was annoyed that the town guards never noticed what they had to put up with to lead to someone dying.

Why was someone else following them now?

"Your shoe," Selene noticed the bloody mess as Xavier started to walk back to her. "We should wash it off quickly. I know where there is water to use."

"That bat, you said the king made the wrong enemy. Is the king following you, me or both?" Selene asked.

"You," Xavier replied.

Selene didn’t want it to be her being followed. The king’s obsession with the women at Xavier’s side was getting out of hand. She hadn’t said much before the king yet he was going to these lengths to keep an eye on her.

"I do not understand why he must go this far. What have you done that he wishes to trouble with your life like this? Or, is he simply bored?" Selene wondered.

Xavier took Selene’s hand to walk with her away from the fallen trap. "He is a fool. He has always been that way since he believed his father prized me over him. Now he feels he must show that he is better than me by obtaining all that I have. He thinks stealing women will upset me."

"Well, wouldn’t you be upset if I were gone?" Selene asked, but she knew he wouldn’t go that far.

"He would need to get his hands on you for that to happen. I wouldn’t be walking around my estate fuming like he wants me to be. I would kill him," said Xavier.

"Then, I would have to help hide you for killing the king but I do not mind it. Perhaps we can go beyond the town to the small home I visited with my parents when we left town for a moment. You must send someone there," Selene said, only now remembering the home.

Selene continued, "I know how to get there."

"I will send someone when we return to the estate. What led you to wander outside? Did you find a clue?" Xavier asked.

"I remembered waiting for my father to come back from his walks and I never knew where he was going. To think he’s been setting up traps all along. He must have been certain I wouldn’t play out there since it was so lonesome and I truly believed at some point there was a monster," Selene replied.

The trap only opened up more questions for Selene. Was there a small chance it wasn’t her father who did it and it was Trevor during his time here?

Selene shook her head, moving on from the latter. Unless Trevor had trouble with someone trying to approach him, it was only her who he wanted to keep out.

"My parents did a good job at hiding what troubles they faced. I grew up thinking our family was normal with no drama surrounding us. Living in this town, I should have known it was suspicious that our lives were quiet," said Selene.

Selene started to think about what her parents were accused of. "I still believe that they didn’t do anything but let us say someone in the palace got close to finding out what secrets we had, that would be a good reason to try killing them."

"I am looking into what they were accused of. If the court was desperate to know what secrets the Harrisons had and grew annoyed that your family remained silent then it isn’t uncommon for them to accuse your family of a crime to force it out of them. A secret in exchange for their lives," Xavier said, having once seen this used.

Unfortunately, like Selene’s parents, the last family this tactic was used on took their secrets to their graves. The court couldn’t always know all that went on around the town.

Xavier continued, "It’s no secret which family your mother belonged to. Having a woman from a group of purebloods who remain out of sight since the war must have had the court thinking they could trap her to get some answers."

"My father was never fond of the court. It is why no one from the court would attend our parties and we would leave events we attended when anyone from the court approached us. What my mother inherited must remain mere gossip," Selene said, wanting to carry on what her parents did.

She would be careful to never let the family secret get out.

Selene stopped walking. "I might only disturb their plans if I search for them. It is possible that your warning won’t stop the king and he will continue to follow me. Maybe even follow you."

Selene wanted her answers and to know that her parents were well but she didn’t want to place them in danger.

Since the court ordered them to be killed with holy weapons, should they be spotted alive then the court would finally have their answer about what secrets were kept here.

"Only search for my grandfather. To anyone following us, there is no harm in me reaching out to him. If he knows what has become of them then he can tell us in private but there is so much attention on us now that I fear someone catching on," said Selene.

"I will use men who are not known to be my followers to continue the search. You only need to try your best to carry on as if nothing has happened. I know you trust her but keep this from Agnes-"

"But some of your guards know," Selene interjected.

"They know they are searching for your parents’ bodies and those who are searching for other things are the ones I trust most along with Lucas. I’m sure Agnes would do what she could to keep your secret but with how dangerous it is, you shouldn’t let her know," Xavier explained his reasoning.

Selene changed her mind now that Xavier put it this way. It would be one more thing to weigh on Agnes’s mind. "I won’t tell her," she decided.

"Your shoes," Selene said, once again focused on the blood trail he was leaving behind. "I do not want to see the guards at our doors again."

"We will not see the guards for this. Darius will not want anyone to know he has been stalking you. He will send another to watch you but I will kill anyone he sends. I wasn’t planning to attend if it came up but if there is a meeting about changing the king, I will attend," Xavier said, interested in stripping Darius of what gave him the power to do as he liked.

Xavier never cared who was king before but now, he wanted anyone other than Darius to be king.

Selene was worried about Xavier showing up. "If you go, won’t you be bothered by others wanting you to be king?"

"It doesn’t matter what they want since I will never seek to be king," Xavier replied.
