Chapter 139: Awaited confession (6)
"I can walk on my own. My feet are fine," said Selene, but her words proved useless.
Xavier ignored her offer to walk on her own two feet and carried her to bed. He set her down carefully and placed a cloth on her head so he could return the dry the wet ends of her hair.
"What must I look for you to wear now?" Xavier asked, taking on full responsibility for dressing her.
"Why? I can call for Agnes to dry me. I am sure she hasn’t gone too far," Selene said, not wanting to trouble Xavier.
"I can do it so there isn’t a third person in here with us," Xavier replied, wanting to keep it just the two of them. He was not ready to have someone else present to disturb the mood he and Selene created in the room.
"Then, you can bring me one of my night dresses so I can simply pull it over my head. I will get changed again if we must leave the room," Selene decided.
Selene started to dry her hair as Xavier looked for something she could wear. "Do you have anywhere to go today?"
"No. You’ve moved these boxes to an interesting place."
Selene smacked her face after realising her mistake. Selene forgot where she had earlier hidden the boxes after moving them from under the bed.
"It is best that I give up trying to hide them from your eyes since you already know what they are," Selene replied, seeing no need to move them again.
Xavier returned with a dress for Selene, but first, he started to dry her hair. "Harold will add shelves to the room you use. If there is anything else you need, ask Harold or Gertrude. They are both more than willing to do anything for you."
"Is this about you believing you have lost Harold to me? I still think it isn’t true. For the time that I have been here, I have concluded that Harold is loyal to the estate. He does what is needed for the estate but I would say he cares for you more and I do not mind. I am new here," Selene said, knowing not to expect much.
"I know Harold better to say he cares a lot for you already. I don’t mind it since he should like you. Harold is a loyal servant so I would hate for him to be at odds with my wife. I have seen the head maid taking a liking to you. Are the maids treating you well?" Xavier asked, curious if they listened to his warning.
"I haven’t had many interactions with the maids but so far there isn’t anything that troubles me. I know of your warning to the servants. While they are to be respectful, I know there might be many things said. They’ve kept their heads down and did their work so I am pleased. It is Agnes that I worry about," Selene said, still worried about how Agnes was fitting in.
"She will find her place amongst them. You cannot always be at her side so if she faces trouble, you must let her handle it on her own at times," Xavier advised Selene.
"I know and that is why I did not ask the head maid about it. I worry about Agnes because she is trying to fill Elsie’s shoes when I do not need her to. I have cared for both of them and never favoured one over the other. I am far behind on avenging Elsie," Selene said, disappointed with herself.
"You are not. Sometimes revenge takes time. I am certain he will not last long in the court since Darius doesn’t care about mixed-bloods. He cares about keeping the kingdom happy by speaking about a hero but as soon as the town loses interest, Darius will have no use for Gabriel," said Xavier.
Xavier also believed Gabriel was unaware of how the court would be. It would have been a better idea to ask for land or a title from Darius instead of asking for a place within the palace. If he offended the one man in the palace, life would not be easy.
"He prides himself on being the kingdom’s hero. I would love to see if no one is interested anymore. The ball will soon be here and today, I saw many preparing for it. Since we will not attend, should we find something to do here or elsewhere? We can have our own fun," said Selene.
"We can do whatever you like. I am finding the theatre-"
"Anything but that. I do not want to witness a group of people putting on an intimate show. Oh, Francesca will invite us to dinner after the ball so we will know what was said. I hope you will join me at her home. I am enjoying her company," Selene said, hoping he would say yes.
"Well, if she continues to hand you those wonderful gifts and put ideas in your head, then I do not mind joining you. I am already well acquainted with her husband. The events of the ball are always spoken of the next day so regardless, you will know about what happened."
After Selene’s hair was dried, Xavier moved on to dry the rest of her body.
Selene saw it as him enjoying touching her once again but she allowed him to do it without any complaints. How many could say Xavier tended to them like this?
Selene raised her arms when Xavier picked up the dress to put over her head.
Xavier took notice of how much she liked what he did. "For someone who wanted to bring Agnes here to dress you, you are enjoying this a bit too much."
"Is it wrong to like seeing my husband dress me? Never would I have predicted this to happen between us. It makes me think of something you once told me," said Selene.
She was reminded of Xavier once telling her love was unpredictable. They had turned to care for each other when Selene had been certain they would live avoiding each other.
"You will not share it with me? Very well," Xavier responded after she shook her head. "I want you to hear from me that there are holy weapons made again. I do not know how many there are but one in human’s hands is already dangerous. I will look into who is behind the attacks."
Selene frowned, not liking the sound of this. "Then you will be placing yourself in danger. Why can’t the guards or the court handle this matter? Isn’t that what they are for?"
"They are both slow and useless. I don’t know what Darius’s plans are but I do not trust they will get rid of this growing issue fast enough. Being a pureblood placed you in danger but now you are also Selene Blackthorn. They will aim for someone like you more. I cannot sit back and do nothing," Xavier shared his reasoning.
Before, he would have gone to sleep in his coffin and wake later to see the aftermath but now, he had someone to protect.
"If it becomes dangerous, I will take you out of town or perhaps out of the kingdom to where it is safe. I am doing this so you do not need to worry. If there are more guards around you, know this is why," said Xavier.
"I don’t like that you are joining," Selene honestly spoke. His hand slowly healing made her think of what would happen if he got badly injured. "But, I will not stop you. You must be safe. Now is not the time for Xavier Blackthorn to not outsmart those around him."
"If you have made me decide to open my heart to you only to leave me soon after then I will curse and haunt you wherever you go," Selene warned Xavier.
Xavier laughed at the warning which seemed more of a gift than a threat. "I will remember this."
