Chapter 135: Awaited confession (2)

"What are you doing, Harold? Is there something you can’t reach?"

Harold sat up upon hearing Xavier’s voice. "Welcome home, Lord Blackthorn. I was tidying the room."

Xavier quickly unbuttoned his shirt to dispose of it before Selene found him. Isaac’s shirt did not suit him so Sleene was bound to know something was off. "I see that. You are quite low today. Is there something under the bed that catches your interest?"

"There are boxes, Milord. They are placed in an order that isn’t pleasing to the eye. If I could simply arrange them better," Harold said as then he would be able to relax. How could they just be thrown around without some order to it?

"Boxes? It must be Selene’s doing. I hope you haven’t ruined a surprise for me. Be quick to arrange them so it doesn’t bother you all day and then leave them before Selene finds out you troubled them. Are you certain there isn’t a cure for your obsession for everything to be in order?" Xavier asked, willing to pay for the solution.

"I am happy this way. It keeps the estate running well. Must I keep looking under the bed to arrange the lady’s things?" Harold questioned, hoping it wouldn’t be so forever. There were better places to hide gifts for Xavier.

"I do not know. How did you find that she was keeping something there?" Xavier wondered, growing more curious about what Selene was trying to hide. "Do you always look under the bed?"

Xavier went to Harold’s side just before he could slide the boxes back under the bed.

"They were placed close to the front of the bed so it was easy to spot when I first entered. Your bed is quite high. Are you certain it is safe for the lady to lay on? And should I place longer bedding for the lady to hide her things from your sight?" Harold wondered.

Harold didn’t want Xavier to find any more of Selene’s surprises and now, he wished he could have left the boxes alone and not needed to arrange them. "Lord Blackthorn!" He exclaimed after Xavier took a box from under the bed. "You mustn’t look. They were placed there for a reason."

Xavier still opened the box. "I didn’t know you could get so loud, Harold. If she didn’t want it to be found then it should be hidden better. Is that not fair?"

"Milord," Harold said, reaching for the box to take it from Xavier’s hands. "You must put it back."

Xavier put back the box, no longer needing it since he got a good look at the inside. "I’ve lost you to Selene. It is a sad day."

"You have not lost me. I am doing the lady and you a favour by returning it as it was. Perhaps if the room she uses by herself had more shelves, the lady would not have to go so far as to put these boxes under a bed," said Harold.

Xavier felt like Harold was scolding him for it. "Then have it done by the end of tomorrow. Your presence isn’t needed here anymore Harold and I have already seen what is inside the box. It seems my wife had a very good day out."

Had Xavier known she was having that much fun, he would have joined her on the ride home.

Harold sighed. When Selene found out they knew about her boxes, he had to apologise. Sometimes it would be better if he didn’t notice anything out of place. "I will get some blood for you to drink. I didn’t get the chance to show the lady it but a letter was sent for you by the palace. I believe it is from the princess."

"Get rid of it. I don’t care how you do it," Xavier replied. He didn’t have time to deal with a spoiled princess who believed he belonged to her. "Throw away anything sent from the princess. Be quick if it is addressed to Selene."

Xavier couldn’t have the princess filling Selene’s head with lies or carelessly sending out threats.

Harold started to make his way to the door to get rid of the letter. Xavier’s reaction was expected since the princess had been quite the headache over the years.

When Harold opened the door, he kept it open since Selene was coming.

"Thank you, Harold. Agnes, you may take a break," Selene said, looking inside the room at Xavier.

Selene closed the door behind her so she could speak in private with Xavier. "Why is it I only know you have returned when I come to our room? Would it hurt for you to seek me out right away? I would do the same for you."

"I was going to change quickly and then come to you. I am not avoiding you or trying to be rude," said Xavier.

"I know. It is just that you move so quietly that I don’t when you are home. We can both make a better effort at it. Why must you change your clothes already?" Selene questioned, suspicious about where Xavier came from. "Have you dealt with someone? Was it my aunt?"

Selene noticed his hesitation to tell her. "Must it be kept a secret?"

"I don’t intend to lie to you but I would like to keep you out of it so you would be telling the truth if you are ever questioned. I don’t want to make you into a liar," Xavier replied.

Selene approached Xavier after noticing something off about his hand. "I do not mind lying for you. It is the least I can do. I think I am a good liar."

"No, you are not," Xavier disagreed with her claim. "At least not to me. I don’t want you to turn into a good liar. I want you to remain as you are now."

Selene still believed she was a good liar. "I am good at it. It is simply different when it concerns you."

Selene stood before Xavier and held his hand to get a better look at the mark she noticed. "Why hasn’t your hand healed? What trouble did you find yourself in? Was it because of me?"

Selene gently ran her thumb against the red mark on his hand. Did this just happen or did Xavier find some strange way for a pureblood to not heal?

"It feels like since I came here, there is much you had to deal with. There might be much you do for me that I do not know of. I enjoy that you act without needing me to tell you what I would love from you. You are always one step ahead which stops me from worrying," Selene noticed.

Selene raised Xavier’s hand to kiss where the bruise was. She hoped it would help with the pain if there were any.

Selene looked up at Xavier as she lowered his hand. There was tension neither one of them could ignore. "I cannot deny that I feel something for you. I do not know when it started but I know you’ve found your way into my heart so I am more than willing to see where this might take us."

After what Gertrude shared with her, what she felt toward Xavier was evident and Selene did not want to keep Xavier waiting any longer.

She looked away to no longer be affected by his gaze but it didn’t help since she ended up glancing at his bare chest. "You should say something. Is this not what you wanted?"

"It is," Xavier placed his hand under Selene’s chin to have her look at him again. "You must allow me to enjoy every bit of this moment."
