Chapter 105: Backstabbed (3)
"And why is that?" Selene asked.
"Because of what we did but that doesn’t mean you should have taken him. If you disliked what we were doing then you should have said something,’ Fiona replied, her concern for Oliver growing.
"Would you have stopped if I came to you? We both know Oliver’s temper. He would have snapped at me and continued to do as he pleased. That doesn’t mean I did something to him. I have not seen Oliver since the day I sat with you," Selene replied with the truth. "And I don’t want to see him again."
Fiona couldn’t think of anyone else who would want to hurt Oliver. It had to be Selene and if it wasn’t her, then it was her husband. Not even the coachman had returned with the carriage to provide her with answers.
Fiona feared that both men were dead and she was left alone to fend for herself. "Then it might be your husband who did it."
"I will not have you accuse my husband. Why do you look so surprised? You aren’t the only one who can defend your husband. Instead of wasting your time here, you should go to the town guards," Selene advised Fiona.
For a moment, Fiona wondered if Selene didn’t have any role to play in Oliver’s disappearance but again, Selene was the only person she could think would want to hurt him. That was why Fiona came to Selene before she went to the guards.
Fiona had heard from Oliver that it was being said Selene had killed Gabriel’s mother. If Selene could do that, what would stop her from harming Oliver?
"There is much said about you. You were in conversations concerning what happened to Gabriel’s mother," Fiona shared.
It was all too suspicious for Fiona.
"You do not give me the benefit of the doubt as a friend would. When have you ever seen me harm anyone? Speak of killing anyone? Is it now that it concerns you, you believe everything?" Selene asked, trying to understand what was going on inside Fiona’s head.
"Go search for your husband elsewhere. I do not know where he is and I don’t have any interest in helping you," Selene said, more than ready to go back inside.
Fiona stepped forward with Selene as if heading inside. "Then, can I speak to your husband? He must have done it on your behalf."
"If my husband comes down here, it will not be a talk you will enjoy. You’ve already done enough, Fiona. I cannot have any more of your accusations. If I hear of you accusing me, I will do everything in my power to ruin you," Selene said, willing to stoop as low as Fiona did.
Fiona was taken aback by the words coming out of Selene’s mouth. She had never heard Selene speak this way. "I don’t care how the lord will react. I need to know what happened to my husband. I know the answers are here."
"How unfortunate for you since I won’t have him come down to address you. If you don’t mind, I don’t want to let my husband know that you were here."
Selene’s words were a slap in the face for Fiona since it was what she had done to Selene. She had always tried to hide Selene’s visits from Oliver.
Fiona stood still for a moment as everything that happened here weighed on her mind. Once it fully dawned on her that she wouldn’t be getting answers she asked, "If something happened to him, what am I to do? There isn’t much money to last me."
It was at this moment Fiona truly regretted what she had done to lead her to this point. She feared losing Oliver so she pleased him every chance she got but now she might be left alone. The few relatives she spoke to would not be happy to hear she was not with Oliver.
Selene didn’t see why Fiona was asking her. It couldn’t be that Fiona was seeking her help. The very help Fiona said she hated. "You will do your best to find another husband, return to your family or work. That is all you can do."
Fiona counted this as the first time Selene had ever left her to fend for herself. With the money Oliver started to bring in recently, Fiona thought she would never have to depend on Selene again but here she was still having a little hope Selene would hand her something.
Fiona stepped away from Selene, disgusted by her actions. She had spoken lies about Selene, told Selene of her dislike that she never struggled but now she was looking for a helping hand.
Rather than stand before Selene like this, Fiona turned to leave. She needed to find Oliver. He was the person she truly needed. She refused to believe that he would leave her behind like this after everything she put up with for him.
Selene knew Fiona would not be smart enough to start thinking of taking care of herself. Fiona was going to focus on finding Oliver and coming up with excuses for why he didn’t deserve what might have happened to him.
Despite how Oliver treated Fiona and spoke to her, Fiona would always love him. Selene believed Fiona settled for what made her comfortable but since Selene had no room to speak she decided to not think about it any longer
Selene opened the front door and was greeted by a few faces. Harold, Agnes, and Lucas were all waiting for her.
Selene addressed Lucas first. "Where did you come from?"
"I was here all night and was about to leave when I saw them at the door. I will leave now," Lucas said, making his way to the door. He wanted to check that the guest was gone.
Selene then looked at Harold and Agnes.
Harold made a quiet departure. He was concerned about Selene being alone with a guest he now knew was her friend. With the guest gone, Harold could get back to his work.
"I am fine," Selene told Agnes. "It went better than I expected. I got to say what I felt and I learned a few things. That talk was needed for her to know that we weren’t going back as we were. I feel relieved."
This was one less thing for Selene to concern herself with. She did not have a friend named Fiona anymore.
"I am happy it happened while he was not here," Selene said, thinking of Xavier. Fiona might have pushed to see him if she spotted him.
"I am sure you will find plenty of friends, Milady. Ones who will realise how wonderful you are. Lady Fiona will one day come to realise the kind friend you were," said Agnes.
"Perhaps she will but I do not want to be approached again to hear about it. It is time I move on from that friendship and Fiona must too. Enough about that, I must see what changed overnight," Selene said, moving on from her talk with Fiona.
It wouldn’t be long before Xavier came down and when he did, Selene did not want him to find her right away.
Agnes followed Selene closely. She was surprised by how well Selene moved on from her friendship with Fiona since there was always a small chance with how much Selene cared for Fiona that she would forgive her.
Agnes was pleased to see that Selene didn’t. Not everyone deserved Selene’s kindness.
