Chapter 139: Sudden Video Call
Chapter 139: Sudden Video Call
Abigail didn’t want Sawyer to see her sadness because she was not entirely honest with him. Until now, she has struggled with her own life, caring for her grandmother and earning a living.
However, she would not complain to anyone else, especially God, because she felt happier now. This was mainly because she no longer lived with her scummy ex-fiancé and had cut ties with her father.
And, of course, she was now dating a gentle and kind person like Sawyer Jones. Her life was much better, and she hoped it would continue to be even better.
...
Sawyer felt a greater sense of pride in her. She is very mature in dealing with his family’s dark history.
"Yes, you are right. It was in the past, and we have to move on," he said, glancing at her before continuing. "And for that, I moved out of my parents’ house and chose to live with my grandparents for my sanity and happiness. I still remember to this day, the day I entered my father’s house and became Charlotte’s son; everyone looked at me as a bastard."
A bitter smile surfaced on his lips as Abigail gently patted his hand.
He continued, "Even after my mother officially married my father, people in that house still did not accept me or her. When my father discovered this, he fired all the old maids and staff and replaced them with new people."
Sawyer fell silent, no longer able to continue talking about his family.
Abigail followed his gaze back to the screen. Only then did she realize the movie playing was one of her favorites: The Lord of the Rings.
’He likes this movie too?’ she thought, amused by how many similarities they shared.
They sat quietly, watching the movie for a few more minutes.
However, Abigail suddenly remembered something. Sitting up straight, she turned to face him, capturing his attention.
"Sawyer, I feel terrible now. You said your mother in M Country is having a medical check-up, right?" she asked, eager to know more about her. "Did she return with you? Is she alright?"
"No, she is still there..." Sawyer shook his head.
"Oh my God! Sawyer, did you leave her alone there while returning to be with me? You shouldn’t have done that. Your mom needs you there, Sawyer." Abigail felt terrible to hear that.
Sawyer ruffled her soft hair playfully before answering, "My father arrived there the night I returned, so I can be at ease leaving her. There’s no need to worry about my mom. She is fine with him there."
Abigail narrowed her eyes, doubtful of his claim. She sensed that he was making excuses to ease her worry.
"Are you telling the truth?"
"Oh, Abby... why would I lie? Of course, I am telling you the truth. Hold on, why do you give me that look?" Sawyer stifled a laugh at her suspicious gaze. He leaned in to kiss her, but just as he was about to, his cell phone vibrated, interrupting the moment.
Sawyer growled as he grabbed his phone, planning to scold whoever was calling him at such a bad time. However, his irritation quickly faded when he saw it was a video call from someone he disliked.
"Why didn’t you answer the call, Sawyer? Who is trying to reach you?" Abigail asked, noticing that he had frozen while staring at his phone. He seemed hesitant to pick up.
Curious, Abigail leaned closer to read the caller’s name. Her expression instantly tensed as she read ’Walter Jones.’
"Ooo... S-Sawyer... your dad..."
Sawyer glanced at her as he nodded. Noticing her nervousness, ideas crossed his mind. He decided to pick up the video call to tease her.
"Abby, earlier, you didn’t believe my dad was in M Country, right?"
Abigail blinked and nodded in response.
"Alright, I’ll pick the video call, and you can prove I’m telling the truth." Sawyer grinned as he observed her expression; she looked even more nervous, and her grip on his hand tightened.
For a few seconds, Abigail widened her eyes in disbelief. She couldn’t believe Sawyer had picked up the video call. Abby quickly moved away from the camera’s spans, worried his father might see her. Gesturing with her hand, she told him she didn’t want his father to know she was there.
"Why did you pick up so long, Son?" Walter Jones’s impatient voice came through the phone, making Abigail even more tense at his deep voice.
Sawyer gently squeezed Abigail’s cold hand, ignoring his father’s question. Instead, he asked, "Why are you video-calling me at this hour? You never called me at this hour before. Is something wrong with Mom?"
"Your mom is fine. Son, we’re only one hour ahead of you; it’s not even ten o’clock here..." Walter said with a smile, shaking his head. "Why do you sound so rushed?"
"I’m not in a rush. I only worry about my mother!"
Walter chuckled before saying, "I see you’re at your grandpa’s house. Is my future daughter-in-law, Abby, still there?" Walter’s question struck Abigail like thunder.
’How does he know I’m here? And how does he know my name? Wait, he calls me daughter-in-law?’ Abigail was bewildered. She feels her cheeks warm.
Sawyer tried to stifle a laugh as he looked at Abigail, who glared at him. Earlier, he had hoped his father wouldn’t notice that she was with him, but it seemed someone had tipped him off. He could guess it was one of his father’s spies.
"How do you know Abby is here? Who told you that she’s here?" Sawyer asked, even though he already suspected the answer. "Dad, who are your eyes and ears here?"
"Just one person. Who else do you think? Of course, it’s your grandpa," Walter laughed before expressing annoyance. " He brags that he met your girlfriend, Abigail, and mocked me because you chose to introduce her to him first before me. He even said you and Abigail had dinner with them...Oh my God, he was really annoying me with his bragging."
Abigail "..."
Sawyer was speechless.
