Chapter 95: Entering the Ice Cream Shop
Jun Wu Xiao was wandering around the capital, and after a while, he noticed that no one was paying attention to him. He thought:
"It seems that I’m not much different from ordinary people. As long as I don’t use much power, no one will recognize me."
The more he walked, the more new things he saw—cars, light bulbs, telephones, and many other strange items whose names he didn’t know.
"What is this? It moves so fast. And those lights don’t seem to have any oil, how do they shine? So many strange things, the capital doesn’t have as many magnificent architectural structures as before, but the new gadgets are numerous. It seems that humanity has achieved many accomplishments over the years. With these things, people’s lives are much more convenient. But I wonder if any powerful weapons have been created? Probably not, considering how exhausting it has been to deal with the aftermath in recent years."
The more he walked, the more useful yet unfamiliar things he saw. There were many new inventions or things he had never seen before.
After a while, he passed by an ice cream shop. He saw this food item and found it quite strange but decided to go in and take a look. Clearly, he didn’t have any money to buy anything, just curiosity led him inside.
"Ice cream? I think I’ve heard this word somewhere, but I’ve never seen it in person. Checking it out shouldn’t be a problem, right?" Jun Wu Xiao thought.
Despite his thoughts, he didn’t hesitate at all. While thinking, his hand had already pushed the door open, and he went inside.
The doorbell rang, and the shop owner, seeing a customer enter, smiled warmly and said:
"Welcome, sir. How can I help you?"
This friendliness made Jun Wu Xiao pause for a moment. He just wanted to see what the shop sold, not to eat. After all, he hadn’t consumed ordinary food for a long time.
"Er, I don’t have any money. I saw the strange things you’re selling and came in to take a look." Jun Wu Xiao said.
The shop owner did not show any disdain for him. Since there were no other customers at the moment, he didn’t mind someone coming in. He observed the old man before him, who had a friendly face but was unfortunate to have lost a hand. Moreover, his clothes looked very old.
The shop owner thought that Jun Wu Xiao was very poor but liked ice cream, so he came in just to look. Feeling compassion, he wanted to give him some ice cream. After all, he had plenty. He said:
"It’s okay, I have a lot. If you like, just sit down and have a bowl of ice cream."
Jun Wu Xiao was stunned for a moment and thought:
"What the hell? I just came in to look, and now I’m being offered to eat for free. But that sympathetic look... it seems I’ve been misunderstood again. However, since the intention is good, I’ll accept it. Later, if there’s anything I can help him with, I will."
A moment later, the shop owner brought out a bowl of ice cream and placed it on the table, he said:
"Here you go."
"Hmm, is this ice cream? It’s cold? Looks delicious.
If I had been given a treat, it would be a waste not to eat." Jun Wu Xiao thought.
Although he understood the owner’s intention, Jun Wu Xiao still said:
"But I really don’t have any money."
The owner smiled and shook his head, speaking gently:
"I feel sorry for you, that’s why I’m giving it to you. Seeing you old and disabled, moreover without money, I assume your family must have perished in the disaster years ago, leaving you all alone now, right?"
"I..." Jun Wu Xiao was at a loss for words, not knowing what to say.
"Damn, completely misunderstood. I’m not a victim of the disaster. Human even worship me as a god. But now, I don’t want to reveal my power or flaunt my identity. I just want to have a normal walk, is that so difficult? But when he spoke, he seemed to empathize with me. Perhaps he also has unpleasant memories of the monster event." Jun Wu Xiao thought.
While he was thinking, the shop owner continued:
"Haiz... I know it’s a sad story, but you shouldn’t dwell on it too much and make your life more miserable. What has passed is in the past, and no matter how much we want, we can’t change it. What we can do is strive to do what we can to make the future better, for ourselves and for society."
Jun Wu Xiao was a bit surprised that the shop owner was advising him. He thought:
"Never thought I’d be advised like this. Although cultivating is hard, for me, it’s normal. As for the monsters, I don’t worry much about them. When enemies come, I just defeat them. Xia Ni wasn’t wrong, although I look like a human, I’m not one anymore. Their feelings are different from mine, but now I feel a bit curious. I want to hear this man’s story."
"Thank you for the advice. What about you? What have you been through?" Jun Wu Xiao asked.
The shop owner seemed to be recalling something from his past. He stared blankly for a moment before stammering:
"My... wife... my children... my family... all dead..."
At this moment, his face no longer held the calmness it had earlier. Tears streamed down his cheeks, as if everything he had bottled up over the years was now pouring out all at once.
"Sob... I... I could only helplessly watch them die one by one. Each person leaving in front of me. Until finally... only I was left. I’m so useless, aren’t I? I couldn’t even protect my own family. Why was it them who died and not me? What did I do wrong? Why am I so miserable?"
He collapsed onto the table, crying as he spoke. Jun Wu Xiao was stunned and thought:
"Damn it, I thought you were strong. How did it come to this? What am I supposed to do now? None of my friends are like this. They would say, death is a part of nature, there’s nothing to fear about dying, or I died simply because I was weak, it’s all my fault."
Facing this situation for the first time left him at a loss for words.
