Chapter 63: Strange Dark Objects

In the capital city, the high officials had led their subordinates to quickly evacuate the populace. Although the people were puzzled by the scene unfolding before them, they trusted these officials and followed them.

This trust was a testament to the previous emperor’s success in enhancing the reputation of the bureaucrats in the eyes of the people. Otherwise, the citizens really would not have followed, and many lives would have been lost.

They did not possess guns for self-defense, so fleeing was the prioritized option. Why were there no guns when there were explosives?

This required a review of the history of this planet. On our Earth, gunpowder, also known as black powder, was believed to have been invented by Chinese chemists around the ninth century. Initially, it was used in medicine as a method to treat diseases. However, the Chinese soon realized that gunpowder could be used as a weapon. It can be said that this accidental discovery did not occur on this planet.

Explosives were different, they were born in an era when humanity had the spirit of cooperation and the conditions to develop better. They only wanted to come up with something that could cause significant destruction to break rocks and not be used as weapons because there was fundamentally no concept of war here.

Chu Wu and three others had now run to the imperial palace, where no one inside hindered them since everyone had already been ordered by Xia Ni to evacuate the citizens.

Xia Ni stood alone on the top of a high tower built to oversee the entire capital city.

His stance was majestic in golden armor, his cloak billowing in the wind. Yet, his face did not show confidence but rather worry.

He felt that this time the death toll would not be small, and it might even be total annihilation in a long time.

His hands clenched tightly though he wanted to destroy these things, he was also aware of their terrifying power, he sighed:

"I hope humanity can overcome this danger."

Then his eyes changed, becoming more resolute. More precisely, they were the eyes of someone ready to die fighting the enemy. At this moment, he had also mentally prepared that he might die in this battle.

Although he was the emperor and should lead the army to fight, this time was different. Their opponents were not humans but truly fearsome entities. Things that could make cultivators fear, so ordinary people could not participate in this battle.

Now, he no longer looked up to the sky but down at the ground, he surveyed the flourishing capital city. A place where people had lived happily for decades. But this place might soon be reduced to nothing.

Suddenly, he noticed four people running towards him, and upon seeing them, he immediately understood their purpose. He instantly jumped down from the tower and ran towards them.

Once all five of them had gathered, Xia Ni said:

"You must have felt it too. Those things in the sky will soon fall. From my observations, they may be circling the earth to distribute their forces. But it won’t be long before they descend."

The other four nodded, having realized that the objects were not falling directly but seemed to be preparing to orbit first.

"Do you have the explosives ready?" Chu Wu asked.

Xia Ni nodded, having considered this from the beginning. The imperial palace had a substantial stockpile of explosives, which should be sufficient. He pointed towards the explosives depot and said:

"There should be enough. We have about a thousand barrels here. I’ve also sent people to the quarries to gather more."

"Good, so how shall we prepare for action?" Chu Wu inquired.

Xia Ni sighed, no really good plan could be used right now. He said:

"Haiz, we must risk everything. The five of us are the capital’s strongest warriors. Even if ordinary people handle the explosives, it would be hard for them to hit the enemies."

Everyone sighed, their intuition would not be wrong. This time the enemy is really strong. But Chu Wu thought for a moment and said:

"Xia Ni, you go ahead, and let the four of us handle the fight here. You need to accompany the evacuees."

Xia Ni was displeased to hear this. He had prepared to sacrifice himself, and now he was being told to flee. He snorted:

"Hmph, do I look like I’m afraid? No matter how strong they are, I am not scared."

The others also stared at Chu Wu, feeling that he might not understand his friend well.

Seeing this, Chu Wu sighed and explained:

"I’m not telling you to flee. But the citizens also need protection. As the emperor, accompanying them serves two purposes: first, to boost their morale, and second, to ensure their safety with your power."

Hearing this, Xia Ni nodded, feeling a bit embarrassed for misunderstanding Chu Wu earlier. He said:

"Ah, ha ha, I’m sorry. I misunderstood you. You’re right. The people are extremely confused at this time, and my presence might indeed help stabilize their spirits somewhat. Besides, they do need protection. You all should attract as many enemies as possible, ideally keeping them away from the civilians. There are also quite a few armors in the explosives depot, feel free to use them."

"Good, now let’s split up and take action." everyone nodded and said.

Xia Ni then immediately ran towards the direction of the evacuating populace. The others began to learn how to use the explosives.

"After burning, this thing needs time to explode. We need to time our attack accurately, otherwise it won’t be effective." Yan Meng Long commented.

"You’re right, we can’t afford mistakes. Otherwise, the situation could become very dangerous." Sheng Yuan agreed.

The four of them studied the explosives, then prepared their weapons and armor, looking up at the sky ready to face the enemy. Their weapons included lighters combined with many barrels of explosives tightly tied together for easy transport.

Hours later, after orbiting, those objects began to plummet to the earth. Over the capital, hundreds of dark and egg-shaped objects fell straight to the ground, causing immense shockwaves.

Buildings shattered, streets were destroyed. Many civilians unfortunately were injured by the shockwaves and the debris flying through the air.

"They’re here. I wonder how things are at the Kunlun Mountains now?" Zhu Ji Feng furrowed his brow and said.

Then, the four of them, armed with explosives, rushed towards the nearest dark object.
