Chapter 53: The Emperor Appears

Seven of them ascended the steps one by one to enter the palace. This was also because Chu Wu had previously instructed them to respect the rituals. Otherwise, they would have already rushed straight in.

As they reached the palace gates, they were guarded by quite a few soldiers. The guards saw Chu Wu, but the six masked figures behind him made them suspicious.

Furthermore, the attire of this group was not the official garb distributed to high-ranking officials, which made the guards even more doubtful. The captain of the guard said:

"General Chu Wu may enter, but the other six must verify their identities first."

Hearing this, the group stopped, remaining silent as they had no identities to verify.

Seeing that they did not provide or say anything to prove their identities, the captain continued:

"If you cannot prove your identities, please leave. Moreover, arriving here masked like this is indeed very suspicious."

While saying so, he still could not understand. In his opinion, wearing masks meant they intended to conceal their identities, which naturally should involve stealth. Yet, these people boldly walked straight through the main entrance, puzzling him about their actual intentions here.

Chu Wu saw this and was about to say something. Otherwise, none of the six could enter. No, to be more precise, they could still enter, but only after a fight.

"These are my friends, not high-ranking officials of the court. I invited them here to have a look." Chu Wu explained.

Upon hearing this, the captain realized that they were not the invited guests for today and said:

"I apologize, General Chu Wu. But today, only those who are invited can enter. Even if they are your friends, it is not permitted."

He was not wrong to do so, his responsibility was to protect the palace, and unclear elements needed to be stopped. Moreover, the emperor’s orders could not be disobeyed, especially when those orders were not incorrect.

Chu Wu knew the captain was not wrong. However, he did not want the group behind him to wreak havoc in the palace to get inside, so he said:

"Haiz, please understand. You won’t be able to stop these six. Don’t say you, even if you brought an army, you couldn’t prevent them from entering. I vouch for their entry. If anything happens, His Majesty will blame me, not you. If you continue to block us, there will indeed be a fight."

"Do I look like someone who likes to fight?" Jun Wu Xiao asked.

"Huh, indeed you do not randomly attack people, but if there’s a need to resolve something quickly through fighting, you will certainly strike. The previous two times you captured the emperor were not without your fight." Chu Wu snorted.

"Ack, ha ha. You’re not wrong." Jun Wu Xiao admitted, somewhat embarrassed.

The captain and his guards, having overheard this brief exchange, were momentarily petrified. Within their dialogue lay a critical piece of information: "Two times you captured the emperor."

The current emperor had never faced such an event, so clearly the two emperors mentioned were from some old dynasties. There were records in the kingdom of a similar incident involving a character known as the Demon God.

Realizing this, the guards were shocked at the identities of those before them. They knew Chu Wu had no reason to lie and acknowledged that their own strength was inadequate against these individuals. The captain sighed:

"Haiz, then everyone may as well enter. After all, we can’t really stop you. But please, General, explain this to His Majesty on our behalf."

"Ha ha, don’t worry. I will take full responsibility if anything arises." Chu Wu assured.

He then led the other six into the interior of the palace.

In the grand and majestic central hall of the palace, the emperor sat on the golden throne.

Although he appeared frail and old, his eyes were remarkably sharp, radiating the dignified presence of a sovereign, yet with an air of ease rather than rigidity.

In front of the emperor, high-ranking officials stood in some rows, not many in number, only about a dozen, standing here.

Looking at the emperor before him, Jun Wu Xiao remarked:

"This old emperor, despite his age, does not seem ordinary at all."

"I feel the same. Although the previous emperor I met was also a good ruler, I feel that in terms of aura, he does not compare to the one before us." Yue Guang nodded in agreement.

The others just listened, having never met an emperor themselves, they had no point of comparison.

Everyone was shocked to see a group of masked individuals assessing the emperor. They could not fathom who could be so bold.

Chu Wu also noticed the stunned looks from the high-ranking officials and, covering his forehead with his hand, said:

"Could you guys be a bit more discreet? Why must you speak so freely here?"

"Ah..." was the only response from the group.

Hearing the brief responses, Chu Wu thought:

"What do you mean by ’ah’? Haiz, I just hope you don’t create a mess. I’ve never felt so exhausted entering the palace before. It’s like babysitting a bunch of old kids who like to act arbitrarily."

"General Chu Wu, who have you brought here? And why are these people wearing masks? What exactly are their identities? They even speak so recklessly." a high-ranking official questioned.

Chu Wu wasn’t surprised by the interrogation. He had been mentally prepared since he decided to bring them along. He responded:

"They are my friends. I brought them here because they wished to come. Anyway, you couldn’t have stopped them if you wanted to. As for their identities, they are somewhat special, so they prefer to remain anonymous."

"This is not acceptable. Not just anyone can enter here."

"That’s true."

...

Other officials also complained about Chu Wu’s casual actions.

Chu Wu cursed in his heart:

"Damn it, if you’re so capable, try stopping them yourself. And when you get beaten up, don’t come crying to me for help."

The emperor had also noticed the presence of the six individuals. He had remained silent thus far because he was assessing their identities. From his observation, they seemed to have a good relationship with Chu Wu, and although their behavior appeared weird, their aura was anything but ordinary.

After some deliberation, the emperor declared:

"Enough. I allow them to stay, and no one will be blamed. If I’m not mistaken, one among these six used to be known as the Demon God. Am I wrong, Chu Wu?"

The emperor’s words stunned everyone present, including Jun Wu Xiao. He was amazed at how the emperor could have guessed such a detail.
