Chapter 536: 0536 can be reassured_1
"On Grandpa’s memorial day, it’s only right that I come and visit. Today marks our first year together, so I wanted him to know," she said.
As he walked over, there were incense and paper offerings bought by others nearby.
Despite his intense germophobia, he knelt down directly on the ground and, following the countryside customs, started to burn the paper money for Ellen Young’s grandfather.
Ellen blinked her eyes; she had been standing all morning, and her legs seemed to be losing sensation.
Seeing Ruffy’s actions, she paused for a moment before quietly kneeling down beside him.
Ruffy didn’t say anything to stop her; she stayed quietly by his side. She didn’t burn anything more, as she had already done so in the morning, but as she knelt there now, Ruffy could still detect the vulnerability hidden in her expression.
She seemed like she shouldn’t have such emotions, but how could a person not have a heart?
She kept recalling the phone call she had with Grandpa when he died, how happy and proud he was, knowing she could change the world.
So what did he think three hours later when he passed away?
Did he also feel some longing for Ellen, far away as she was?
Ellen only had Grandpa as family, and wasn’t it likewise for him? Only she was his family.
He had cut ties with his own family when he was younger, living a solitary life. It was only in his later years that he took care of Ellen. He didn’t enjoy the affection of family for long, as Ellen was often away from home. His life had been such a lonely one.
"Grandpa, I’m Ellen’s boyfriend. This is my first time coming to see you, I hope you’ll forgive me," said Ruffy, his voice low, filled with respect.
In fact, he had known about Ellen Young’s grandfather’s situation for a long time, but he had no connection with Ellen, so he had neither the relationship nor the right to worship the old man.
Now, at last, he had a legitimate opportunity.
"Grandpa lived his whole life alone, so he didn’t want me to be alone as well," Ellen suddenly spoke, her voice flat yet with a faint wisp of reminiscence, "so he always hoped that I would find my own family, not wanting me to be alone in this world. He also feared that I would spend my life only on scientific research, not getting married, without family, just like him."
He didn’t want to marry, yet he didn’t want Ellen to fall into that same predicament.
Everyone has their own choices, and deep down, he hoped Ellen would truly find her own family.
He just didn’t know how extraordinary Ellen’s biological parents were.
Perhaps all he wished for was that there would be a family who sincerely cared for Ellen.
Ruffy freed one hand to grasp her wrist, looking at the tombstone’s photograph, that aged and kindly face wearing a gentle smile, he solemnly said, "Grandpa, rest assured, she will have me by her side all her life."
Many solemn promises don’t mean as much as simply being there always.
If one didn’t truly cherish someone, who could promise to be by their side for a lifetime?
If Grandpa Young could see from beyond, Ruffy thought, he would surely be comforted.
Ellen too smiled, saying softly, "Yes, Grandpa, you don’t have to worry about me anymore."
The wind today was strong, yet it seemed to grow gentle as it passed the grave, as if caressing the photograph on the tombstone, causing the already smiling face to appear even more compassionate and kind.
The village head and others watching this scene from a distance let out a puff of smoke and sighed softly, "Now you can rest in peace, can’t you?"
