Chapter 328: 0328 Lily_1
Ellen Young and Ruffy Smith first went back to their respective homes.
The little girl’s situation didn’t affect Ellen much, as she already knew the outcome.
So when she received the news the next morning that the couple had sneaked away in the middle of the night, Ellen didn’t feel anything special.
Indeed, it was as she and Ruffy had guessed.
Early in the morning, the village was noisy, and everyone came out to see what the fuss was all about.
Someone had dressed Lily in a new set of child’s clothes, and the tiny child just sat quietly on the steps of Aunt Hailey’s house.
Without crying or fussing.
The people surrounding her were all talking at once.
"What shall we do now, the folks have run off, leaving behind a girl, claiming she’s Ellen’s niece?"
"What niece, there’s not a shred of relation, Hordy Young isn’t even their biological child."
"A brother stealing his brother’s fiancée, anyone would be heartbroken and cut off ties."
"It has nothing to do with the child... let’s not talk about that, what should we do, isn’t Ellen supposed to take care of her?"
"Ellen is now a scholar, let the country figure it out."
"..."
On Damien Frost’s side, he had also brought over all the investigation results.
According to the couple’s information, he had a complete understanding of everything and came to ask Ellen if she wanted to send the child back.
But the truth was, after seeing the materials, he knew there was no point in sending Lily back.
Lily had not been well-cared for there; although the middle-aged couple seemed kind on the surface and spoke of their helplessness, they would often hit and yell at Lily.
Last night, Lily’s kneeling and begging was an act of desperation; she didn’t know if her life would be even more miserable with Ellen.
She was born out of her mother’s extramarital affair, and with her father’s identity unknown, she was often bullied by other children and hadn’t even gone to school.
The reason her mother couldn’t be found was that she mixed with a drug addict outside and was driven to suicide.
She died in a foreign place, and now, with this lead gone cold, who Lily’s father is remains under investigation.
The middle-aged couple’s family name was Yang, but since Lily hadn’t attended school and lived in a remote village, she wasn’t registered in the household, and her name, Lily Yoh, was just a casual placeholder.
She wasn’t raised in their family; they lived in the county town, while Lily lived in the countryside and was raised by others.
If you really had to describe it, a single word, "tragic," would completely sum up her short life so far.
Luckily, Ellen was adopted by Hordy Young. With the kind people of Haran Village, knowing the extent of Lily’s suffering, no one could blame a child.
In fact, everyone was whispering that it wasn’t that they couldn’t take her in, but if Ellen didn’t, how could they justify raising her?
After listening to the information reported by Damien, Ellen let out a sigh, "She could stay in the village."
She could accept Lucy Wood, who had come from afar, so one more child was just another mouth to feed.
For now, that was the plan.
Understanding her intentions, Damien nodded and left, "Should we investigate her father?"
Ellen nodded, "Yes."
Some things always needed to be investigated. The child wasn’t her responsibility; she was merely without a place to go. Ellen could allow her to stay out of a little bit of kindness, but she couldn’t imagine raising her.
Damien understood.
Indeed, it wasn’t realistic for Ellen to raise her; she was too busy, with no time to care for a child.
But leaving another mouth in the village wasn’t any trouble at all.
After thinking for a bit, Ellen decided to talk to the village chief. As she passed through the center of the village, she saw Lily.
