Chapter 96: Chapter 96 Empathy_1

"Ah, I still find it hard to part, just sending my child off to Russia like this? Away from home tens of thousands of miles in the snap of a finger, unable to return even once in a year, how should we cope with that?"

Lao Liu’s mother spoke with lingering reluctance.

Although they had brought with them three hundred thousand cash today, they hesitated when it came down to it.

"What is there to fear for a boy! He should venture out and see the world while he’s young. Staying holed up at home all the time will lead to no achievements." His father was more easygoing about it.

However, there were quite a few parents who shared Lao Liu’s mother’s sentiments.

Although they wanted their children to study abroad, to broaden their horizons and gain some prestige, they also worried about their children not being able to adjust to the new environment, or facing health issues and other problems. It would be a troublesome ordeal for the family to visit them overseas.

This situation was different from being within the country.

If the child was in Shanghai or any other domestic city for university, any issues faced would not be much of an issue as the family could purchase airplane tickets to attend to them immediately.

However, this was Russia, a foreign land!

Making a trip there would not be easy, let alone the cost of travel, just acquiring a visa is a hassle in itself.

While the parents were busy discussing, Wang Ye had already gone onstage.

Taking the microphone handed over by the host, he waited for a few seconds, waited until everyone’s attention was focused on him, then Wang Ye began with a smile.

"Respected elders, younger brothers and sisters, good morning."

"My name is Wang Ye, a student who just started at Friendship University this year. At this time last year, I was in the same situation as everyone else, sitting in a high school classroom, awaiting the arrival of the college entrance examination."

With just these two sentences, he had quickly bridged the gap with the audience below the stage.

Many parents, at this point, looked at Wang Ye as if they were looking at their own children.

And the boys and girls below the stage were even more so looking as if they saw themselves in him, they were very interested in hearing about Wang Ye’s experiences as a student studying abroad.

Taking a pause, Wang Ye withdrew the smile off his face, spoke in a heavy tone:

"At that time, even though it seemed like there was nothing wrong on the surface, I was chatting and laughing with my classmates. It seemed like I was not taking the impending college examination too seriously on the surface.

However, I was in fact very lost.

Because I knew that in a few months, the students in the same class will go their separate ways.

My grades were not too good, so certainly I wouldn’t be able to get into a good university.

So what should I do, what could I do after the college entrance examination?

I had no idea what the answer to that question was.

Maybe I would go to work in a factory, or maybe I would start a small business as a street vendor or open a shop.

Those students who performed well academically, they would go to a decent university, or even to prestigious universities like Tsinghua University or Peking University.

A year from then, three to five years from then, ten years from then...

When we have a class reunion, how could I face my old classmates?

They would be dressed up, driving luxury cars, talking about company mergers, about traveling abroad, and about their big houses in first-tier cities.

What could I say?

Talk about how my street vending business was doing well, or how cheap and plentiful the factory lunches were?..."

With Wang Ye’s narration, the boys and girls below the stage couldn’t help but clench their fists.

Yes, what Wang Ye was saying now is exactly what they’re thinking right now!

After all, they’re all senior high school students, sixteen or seventeen years old, not ignorant little kids anymore.

Who wouldn’t ever have dreams about their own future?

Presumably, no one would consider working in an electronics factory or setting up a street stall as their ideal future...

Wang Ye’s words have caught many people off guard!

Just at this point, Wang Ye suddenly raised his voice, raised his clenched fist, and all but roared out:

"I don’t want to live like this!

I don’t want to live an ordinary life for all of my life!

I too want to be just like the best students, to work and live in big cities, to lead a shiny and respectable life, to become an object of envy for others."

At this point, Lao Liu was already feeling waves of chills, and his body was shaking slightly.

He felt that the older student named Wang Ye on the stage, what he said really struck a chord in his heart!

Which adolescent wouldn’t desire poetry and a far-off place, he too didn’t want to toil at a brick kiln day in and day out!

Clearly, there was more than one student in the audience below the stage who shared his sentiment, almost all of the boys and girls held their breath, their eyes wide as they intently watched Wang Ye onstage.

The empathy was too strong...

At this point, Wang Ye lowered his tone, a warm smile showing on his face.

He slowly began:

"I am fortunate. I wish to thank my parents. When I was on the verge of giving up, they found out about self-funded study abroad.

Actually, my family’s financial situation is not that good, there may well be a significant gap compared to many of my juniors present here.

However, for the sake of my ideals, and even more so for my future,

My parents resolutely used all our family savings and even borrowed some from our relatives and friends to send me off to Russia..."

Upon reaching this point, Wang Ye’s eyes welled up with tears, he was clearly very grateful to his parents.

Now, the parents in the audience were all moved.

Ah, such is the love of all the parents in the world!

Every father and mother is great, they are truly willing to give everything for their children!

Wang Ye’s parents were like that, the parents in the audience were likewise...

Parents who originally thought that the cost of studying abroad was a bit high and it would be a struggle for the family to afford it, now felt a bit ashamed, as if they had let their own children down...

Look at Wang Ye’s parents, and then reflect on themselves!

If they didn’t grit their teeth and send their children abroad, if their child didn’t have a good future later on, they would probably regret it for a lifetime...

Even if the child is considerate and doesn’t hold it against them, could they forgive themselves?

.........

Once emotions were running high, Wang Ye then conjured up a smile, and his tone became cheerful.

"As a result of undergoing Russian language training in my home country, and due to delays made by the intermediary in terms of paperwork, it was only in January of this year that I arrived in Moscow to enroll in Friendship University’s preparatory classes.

I would now like to share some of my experiences and feelings after arriving in Moscow.

Being there, you really get to experience what is known as internationalization, encountering students studying abroad from all over the world.

Just take my own class as an example, there are students from Latin America, Africa, Korea, and Vietnam!

..."

As he spoke, Wang Ye started playing some slides.

A series of pictures appeared on a large white canvas above the podium.

These were specially taken by him borrowing a digital camera from Lao Zhou before returning to his home country.

There were photos of him and his classmates in class during the preparatory course.

And of course, the towering main building of Moscow University was not to be missed.

Also, on the school dormitory, the happy weekend parties among classmates...

These images had quite an impact on the parents and students below the stage.

Life as a university student abroad seems to be much more colorful and appealing than what it would be in a domestic university...
