Chapter 750: Chapter 750 Bringing Surprises_1
Wenger initially thought David Dain was talking nonsense. With the club being so poor, where would the money come from?
However, upon further thought, it didn’t seem right. David Dain was never a man prone to joking, and he was always very serious and rigid in his actions and demeanor.
So, if he was now telling him that the club was about to come into some money, that meant there must be something he did not know.
Wenger promptly asked, "What’s going on? Have we secured another bank loan, or have we landed a big sponsorship deal?"
Generally speaking, there were only two possible sources of income for a club.
David Dain, perhaps in a very good mood, unexpectedly played coy, shaking his head with a smile, "Neither, keep guessing!"
Wenger suddenly thought of a possibility and his face turned anxious, "You’re not thinking of selling our players, right! Let me tell you, players like Henry and Vieira are absolutely not for sale! For other players, if the price is reasonable, we can consider it. But except for Henry and Vieira, I don’t think there’s anyone else in the team that could command a high price."
As for the team’s situation, no one understood it better than Wenger.
The team’s most high-profile player might be Boge Camp, the renowned "Ice Prince." But the problem was, he was getting on in years and about to retire, so no club would want to buy him.
That left only the set of twins, Henry and Vieira. Especially Henry, who this year had already begun to shine, wreaking havoc for the opposition, he was a sharp knife in front of goal with a high scoring efficiency.
His excellent performance and young age had naturally attracted the attention of many luxury clubs.
Given the financial struggles of Arsenal, a few foreign luxury clubs have even asked Arsenal for a price, hoping to whisk Henry away during the summer transfer season.
Of course, Wenger would not agree to any offer, his response to all clubs was, "Henry is not for sale, regardless of the price!"
From a coach’s standpoint, it was apparent that he didn’t want to let Henry go.
But he was also aware that if a team like Real Madrid or Barcelona wildly offered an astronomical price, his opinion probably wouldn’t be important. The club’s shareholders would go directly around him to negotiate a deal.
But that was not very likely, as while Henry’s performance was impressive, he had not reached the stage of dazzling brilliance.
There were other comparable or just slightly older in-their-prime super strikers in the football world at the time.
Like Adriano, Shevchenko, Raul, and of course not to mention Ronaldo!
Those were the brightest attacking stars of the time, and Henry was not qualified to be compared with them yet.
......
Understanding Wenger’s anxiety, David Dain patiently said with a smile, "How can it be selling players? Even if the club is in a pinch, we can’t do such a thing as killing the goose that lays the golden eggs."
Upon hearing this, Wenger was finally relieved.
David Dain finally shared the news, he lowered his voice, "These past few days, I’ve met a very powerful investor who plans to buy our club! As long as the buyout goes smoothly, he can give you at least thirty million pounds this summer transfer season to strengthen the team. Plus, the club’s financial status can be completely turned around. Debts and loans, the investor will directly pay it all off."
Upon hearing this, Wenger exclaimed in joy, thirty million pounds...
This was an amount he didn’t dare even think of, and the best part was that it was additional money, not the kind that came by selling off players.
With this thirty million pounds, he could bolster the lineup with three or four decent replacement players, or even buy one or two star players, which would significantly enhance both the starting and substitute lineups!
Then next year’s performance would be guaranteed, they might even take a shot at the UEFA Champions League...
Don’t forget, although they are definitely not winning the league championship this year, they can still secure a place among the top three in the league, which grants them a spot in the Champions League.
The Champions League is a competition stage for the best clubs in all of Europe, much more prestigious than a league championship.
Arsenal has not been recognized as a luxury club in the football circle because, firstly, the club has been relatively poor, rarely making shockwaves in the transfer market with big-money moves.
And secondly, their Champions League record has not been very good, certainly nowhere near the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, Juventus and the Milan duo.
As the head coach, Wenger naturally had his dreams. He too hoped to lead the Arsenal team to dominate the UEFA Champions League!
"Is the buyout settled? How come I haven’t heard anything," Wenger asked with a frown.
"It’s pretty much decided, and we are now in the implementation phase. Professor, I need your cooperation," said David Dain confidently.
Wenger asked suspiciously, "Need my cooperation? I’m just the head coach, I don’t have any shares in the club, and I don’t have any say in such major matters. How can I cooperate?"
David Dain grinned and said, "Now that the Champions League spot is secure, and we certainly can’t win the league championship, the outcomes of the next one or two matches don’t really matter, right? You could let more young players play to gain experience, and the main players like Boge Camp, Vieira and Henry, who have played so many matches, must be tired. They could do with a rest ..."
Wenger, known as the "Professor", was of course a very intelligent man.
So when he heard David Dain’s words, he immediately understood what he meant.
Which was to let the team lose a match or two, which would help the new investors buy the team at a lower price!
Of course, such a matter was to be understood not spoken openly, and David Dain put it very subtly.
And it was not a command, but dependent on Wenger’s choice.
Wenger could pretend not to understand and proceed as usual, but then he would have to consider his fate once the new boss took over the club...
Of course, if he chose to cooperate with David Dain, deliberately losing a match or two, he would be deemed a "loyal servant" to the incoming boss. Not saying he could get a lot of benefits, at least keeping his job would not be an issue.
Having understood this, Wenger said without hesitation, "I know what to do, don’t worry. But, is the new boss really that powerful? At a time like this, the global economy is downtrodden, who would be willing to invest in the football industry? By the way, I’ve recently heard that Chelsea is also being bought out, is that true?"
