Chapter 459: Chapter 459: Can’t Keep a Low Profile Even If I Want To_1
While Wang Ye was engaged in a game of wits and courage with a group of cunning old foxes in Moscow, he unwittingly sparked a major fuss back in his small hometown in China...
The dust had barely settled after the New Year, and it was the first day back at work for most organizations across the country.
Not long after Wang Ye’s old tutor, Teacher Liu, arrived at the school in the morning, he received a call from Zhang Xiaoxi, one of his most proudest students.
"Teacher Liu, are you at school?"
Teacher Liu responded cheerfully, "Yes, I am. Xiao Xi, you haven’t returned to school yet, right? Your school term should start later than ours."
After all, high schools start their term earlier than universities, so Zhang Xiaoxi wouldn’t have returned to her university in the capital yet.
"I haven’t left yet, but I plan on heading back the day after tomorrow. By the way, I’ll be at the school soon... oh, I mean our high school, I need to see you about something, will you be in your office?" Zhang Xiaoxi said on the phone.
Teacher Liu was taken aback momentarily, and hurriedly replied, "Of course, you’ll find me in my office. But why do you need to see me?"
"Hmm, let’s talk when I get there, I’m almost there."
And with that, Zhang Xiaoxi hung up.
Teacher Liu shook his head, that mischievous girl...
But when it came to Zhang Xiaoxi, Teacher Liu really had nothing but praise. Over his many years of teaching, she was undoubtedly one of his star students.
She was lively, academically excellent, and advanced to one of the best universities in the country, Tsinghua!
Obviously, her future career would be just as promising, and who knows, she might even end up assisting him someday...
......
As a simple class tutor, Teacher Liu didn’t have a private office. The large office he was in was occupied by several other teachers.
Since there was no particular work to be done, everyone was lounging around the office, chatting idly while sipping tea and cracking melon seeds.
Teachers can be quite gossipy, discussing every imaginable topic when not in a classroom setting.
After discussing the latest "gossip" about the school principal, one teacher turned the conversation towards Teacher Liu.
"Hey, Old Liu, I heard you had a pretty good year!"
Teacher Liu was startled, and asked, "What do you mean?"
"I heard from Old Hu that during the New Year, you were smoking Zhonghua cigarettes and drinking Moutai! Wow, even the principal can’t match up to that." the teacher said sarcastically.
Since they all lived within the same Teacher Residential Compound, any small occurrences within a household quickly circulated among all the residents.
Teacher Liu quickly explained with a laugh, "A student gave me those gifts for the New Year. You all know how much I earn monthly, how could I afford Zhonghua cigarettes and Moutai!"
That’s true. Even though their school is considered a key high school in the region, it is located in a small county town where teachers’ salaries are relatively low.
For an experienced teacher like Teacher Liu, who has been teaching for over a decade, his monthly wage barely exceeded two thousand yuan. With class head allowances, teaching overtime fees and such, it wouldn’t cross three thousand!
Still, in the context of the small county town life, this was considered a high income!
And it certainly couldn’t afford "luxuries" like Zhonghua cigarettes and Moutai liquor.
As everyone was engrossed in their idle chit-chat, a knock on the office door caught their attention and Zhang Xiaoxi peeked in, calling with a smile, "Teacher Liu, I’ve arrived."
Teacher Liu quickly waved his hand, beckoning her in, "Xiao Xi, come on in."
When Zhang Xiaoxi entered, the other teachers in the room all greeted her. It’s not every year that they have one or two graduates who make it to Tsinghua or Peking University. Besides, Zhang Xiaoxi only graduated a year and a half ago, there’s no way they wouldn’t recognize her.
Having taken a seat in front of Teacher Liu’s desk, he asked, "Why didn’t you just call if you needed something? Why did you have to come all the way here? It’s not something terribly important, is it?"
It’s no wonder Teacher Liu said that; after all, what could be so pressing for a university student like Zhang Xiaoxi?
Zhang Xiaoxi took out a thin envelope from her bag with a serious expression and said, "Teacher Liu, this is money Wang Ye donated for the school. He wants to use it to build a gymnasium."
It took Teacher Liu a moment to process this. He laughed and asked, "Donation? Our school ain’t poor. The school already has plans to upgrade the sports field. The running track will be leveled and we’re thinking of cementing the basketball court!"
"Teacher Liu, please look inside the envelope..." Zhang Xiaoxi said with a hint of exasperation.
Clearly, there was a misunderstanding. What Teacher Liu called "upgrading the sports field" was nowhere near the scale of the "gymnasium" that Wang Ye had in mind!
Looking puzzled, Teacher Liu opened the envelope in his hand, pulling out a piece of paper.
At a glance, his eyes nearly bulged out...
"This... what’s this..." Teacher Liu stumbled over his words.
"Didn’t I just tell you? It’s the money Wang Ye donated to the school for building a gymnasium." Zhang Xiaoxi whispered.
After all, when Wang Ye had entrusted her with this task, he had asked her to keep it low-key.
In accordance with his wishes, Zhang Xiaoxi hadn’t even informed her parents, and didn’t want the other teachers in the room to hear their conversation either.
Luckily, the other teachers were all engrossed in their conversations and paid no attention to the conversation between Teacher Liu and Zhang Xiaoxi.
"Where did he get one million from?! This is... in US dollars?!" Teacher Liu exclaimed loudly.
Not only did this startle Zhang Xiaoxi, but it also captured the attention of the other teachers in the room.
"What? One million US dollars? What are you talking about, Liu?"
"What? One million!"
"What’s gotten into Liu? Why is he so excited?"...
Questions tumbled out of their mouths in confusion.
Zhang Xiaoxi held her head in her hands and sighed. She knew that no matter how subtle they attempted to be, it was impossible to keep such a thing under wraps.
After all, in a small county town, a million US dollars was simply too shocking for words...
......
Eventually, Zhang Xiaoxi ended up dealing with the aftermath on Wang Ye’s behalf.
Teacher Liu brought her to meet the school principal and then the Education Bureau’s leader, and she was kept busy throughout the day.
Finally, under her strong ’resistance’, the school decided against holding a schoolwide assembly for the event. Initially, the leaders wanted to have Zhang Xiaoxi deliver a speech in place of Wang Ye...
Luckily, Zhang Xiaoxi had clearly conveyed Wang Ye’s intentions concerning the donation.
The school leaders and the Education Bureau’s leader solemnly pledged that every penny of the money would be used towards improving the school’s infrastructure. They assured her that they wouldn’t disappoint the student who made the donation... in short, Wang Ye.
However, it seemed unlikely that an entire million would be necessary to build just a gymnasium, so they decided to put up a new dormitory block simultaneously.
The school principal suggested naming the new gymnasium after Wang Ye...
Zhang Xiaoxi knew that Wang Ye wouldn’t want this, so she suggested the name ’Qinye Gymnasium’, after all, the word "Ye" was still part of the name!
Although, not many would connect the new gymnasium with Wang Ye...
