Chapter 1412 - 1106: Who is the Most Suspicious?

Chapter 1412: Chapter 1106: Who is the Most Suspicious?

Wang Ye’s convoy screeched into the city bureau, only to find the place already abuzz with activity and aglow with lights, with many policemen hurrying by, and numerous police cars setting off with their piercing sirens blaring.

Clearly, the impact of Grezlov being targeted in an assassination attempt was beginning to show.

It must be recognized that while Grezlov didn’t have much actual power, his official rank was by no means low!

Truthfully speaking, he held a position that was on par with that of the Kremlin, yet now he faced an armed assault in the capital, Moscow. It was foreseeable that this would cause a major uproar in the Moscow political arena.

The first to be affected was the Police Department. How incompetent they must be to allow someone of Grezlov’s stature to come under physical threat in the capital...

Thus, upon receiving the news, Minister of Internal Affairs Yefrogen and First Deputy Minister Vladimir arrived at the city bureau to take Grezlov’s report and record the case, and they personally deployed police units to fully engage in the manhunt for the fleeing gunman.

Guided by the city bureau’s Director, Wang Ye arrived at the Meeting Room to find Grezlov, Yefrogen, and Vladimir in conversation.

Upon seeing Wang Ye’s arrival, all three stood up to greet him.

Grezlov had by now calmed down, he firmly grasped Wang Ye’s hand, gratitude filling his voice as he said, "Misha, you’ve saved my life this time! If it weren’t for that bullet-proof car you gave me, I’d probably be in the... hospital right now."

Wang Ye was taken aback; he hadn’t anticipated that the car he gave actually saved Grezlov’s life!

The initial reason he gifted Grezlov that bullet-proof car was indeed due to concern over the chaotic situation; should anyone dare to take a desperate risk, then the lives of several candidates would be in danger.

That’s why he had given Grezlov a bullet-proof car. In fact, he had also given one to Medvedev.

As for Rossiyana, there was no need for him to do so; this lady was even more "afraid of death" than Wang Ye, who had already ordered a batch of bullet-proof cars, including not only the Land Rover Range Rover but also the Jaguar XJL, and now, whenever she traveled, the number of security personnel with her was no fewer than those with Wang Ye...

Wang Ye patted Grezlov’s shoulder, comforting him, "It’s good that you’re safe. Mr. Speaker, you must take your security more seriously from now on."

After saying this, Wang Ye turned his head to look at Minister Yefrogen and Deputy Minister Vladimir, speaking with a stern tone: "Regarding this matter, I need the Ministry of Internal Affairs to provide the Duma with a detailed explanation. Why such an incident could occur in Moscow, where does all the funding allocated to your Department go every year!"

Strictly speaking, the Ministry of Internal Affairs is not under the jurisdiction of the Duma; usually, Wang Ye speaks with ministers from government departments who wield great power in a very cordial manner.

But the situation is different now. Grezlov is the Duma Speaker, and he has experienced such an incident, which means someone must take responsibility.

If the Ministry of Internal Affairs fails to capture the gunman or cannot produce satisfactory results, the Duma will definitely not let it go easily and will indeed initiate a process to hold the Ministry accountable.

Although Yefrogen is a loyalist of Medvedev, should it come to that, even Medvedev would not dare to protect him!

Clearly, Yefrogen and Vladimir both understood this. Therefore, after listening to Wang Ye’s rebuke, not only did they not express any dissatisfaction, they immediately stood side by side, like students who had made a mistake, assuring Wang Ye that they would catch the suspect as quickly as possible and provide the Duma with an explanation.

To demonstrate his professionalism, Yefrogen further inquired about some details concerning the case from Grezlov, who cooperated and answered accordingly.

"Mr. Speaker, were you returning home from the Duma Building after work tonight when the gunman, who seems to have precisely pinpointed your schedule and route, attacked? That person must be quite familiar with you," Yefrogen asked.

Grezlov shook his head and said, "No, tonight I went to have dinner with the President at the Kremlin. I left the Kremlin planning to go home when I met the gunman’s ambush on the way."

"Who then knew about your schedule for tonight, especially the exact timing?" Yefrogen pressed on.

"Not many people were aware of it; only my Assistant, my driver, and of course, those who attended dinner tonight. The President, Gavriil, Medvedev, that’s about it," Grezlov answered calmly.

Upon hearing this, Yefrogen broke into a cold sweat.

Grezlov’s Assistant and driver were likely his close confidants; it was highly improbable that they were involved, leaving the three others who attended dinner tonight as the most likely suspects...

But the issue was that he dared not investigate any of those three!

Nonetheless, from his professional experience, it was precisely those three who were the most suspect...

With this thought, Yefrogen’s sweat chilled him even more, his shirt back soaking wet. However, this analysis was something he dared not voice!

After all, the three prime suspects, one was the current most powerful person, another the Director of the Kremlin, and one more not only was his direct superior but also the "benefactor" who had promoted him to his position!

Whom could he investigate...

For a while, Yefrogen’s mind went blank, not knowing what to say.

Fortunately, Vladimir stepped in to ease the situation, saying, "We understand the general situation. Now, the Minister and I will further inquire with your driver and Assistant, Mr. Speaker, to see if there are any additional clues."
