Chapter 107: Chapter 107 This Gift is Too Excessive_1

Angelina has a boyfriend, and he’s Chinese!

Ever since she broke the news to her family a few days ago over the phone, the topic has become the main focus of their family discussions!

Although Angelina’s parents didn’t disapprove this, they were inevitably a little worried.

But this is normal in any corner of the world. When a child dates a foreigner, it’s only natural for the parents to worry.

After all, being different in race and nationalities would bring along a lot of differences in life habits and cultural values.

At the outset of a relationship, romantic feelings could mask many issues, but how about after the couple have been living together for a longer time?

There would be high chances of problems emerging!

When this was discussed at home, both parents expressed their concerns.

Dad’s main concern was Wang Ye being a student studying abroad meaning he was still young and not having any sources of income.

Did that mean he had to rely on Angelina to support him financially?

He wasn’t one of those "gold diggers", was he?!

In the Russian community, such people are often looked down upon!

Mom’s main worry was—where would Angelina and Wang Ye settle down if they were to get married? Russia or China?

If they were to settle in Russia, that would be the best scenario as they wouldn’t be far from home and could take care of each other.

But if they decided to live in China, that would be quite far away—they possibly might only be able to return once every few years.

Besides, wasn’t China a very poor and underdeveloped country? Wouldn’t their daughter have to suffer if she moved there?

However, little Nova didn’t share her parents’ concerns. She believed so long as Angelina and Wang Ye loved each other, everything else would sort itself out.

Nationality, income, cultural differences; all these issues could be resolved!

Of course, she felt this way probably because of her young age and lack of understanding of the hardships of life...

......

Regardless of their thoughts, Angelina was home now and she had even brought her boyfriend along.

At first sight, Angelina’s family had a rather good impression of Wang Ye.

He was tall and had a handsome face. Other than his black hair, in every other aspect he didn’t lose to any Russian boy.

In particular, his facial features were quite stereoscopic, which appealed to the Russians’ aesthetics—a pretty face even by Russian standards.

After introductions were made, mom and dad ushered both of them into the living room.

The living room in these old Russian buildings was usually quite small, and the living room and dining room areas weren’t separated, making the space seem even more constrained.

Naturally, there wasn’t much to say about the décor of the house.

The floor was covered in old wooden strips, and the walls were adorned with a dark yellow cloth-patterned wallpaper. It was simple, but had a warm charm to it.

Wang Ye handed over the box he was carrying and said with a smile to Angelina’s dad, "Uncle, I heard you like to drink, so I bought some liquor for you. I’m not sure if you will like this brand."

Dad hadn’t noticed the thing Wang Ye was carrying and had thought that it was their own luggage.

He took the medium-sized box with a startled look, and upon glancing at the label, his eyes widened in surprise.

It was Crown Vodka, one of the most expensive alcoholic beverages in Russia!

This was akin to a son-in-law from a small town in China bringing a case of Feitian Maotai as a gift when meeting his in-laws for the first time.

"Why...why did you buy so much?!" he stammered out after a moment.

This was an entire case—eight bottles!

"You like it, so I bought a bit more. Angelina and I live quite far away and we don’t get to come back often," Wang Ye responded with a smile.

Dad felt somewhat relieved. At the very least, this young man was polite.

It wasn’t so much the fact that he was generous and bought a lot of good wine, but rather that he had taken into consideration dad’s preferences—thoughtfulness matters!

On the other hand, Angelina also took out a small plastic bag and handed over two boxes to Nova.

"Nova, these are gifts from Misha to you and mom," she said.

Mom was busy pouring water and serving snacks at that moment.

"Wow! Do I have a gift too? Thank you, Misha!" Nova exclaimed, excitedly taking the boxes.

But the moment she took a look, her eyes widened in surprise.

She stared at the image on the box for a while before hesitantly raising her head to ask, "What’s inside...."

There was a picture of a mobile phone on the box, but Nova could barely believe that it could possibly contain a real phone!

You have to understand, at that time, mobile phones were considered a luxury item for most common folks.

"Yes, they are phones. With these, it’ll be much more convenient for us to stay in contact," Angelina confirmed, nodding her head.

"Mom, Dad! Misha gave me a phone! Oh, and there’s one for mom too," Nova suddenly cried out in a high pitch.

Wang Ye was even startled by her reaction.

It was just a plain old Nokia, what’s the big deal...

Wang Ye was viewing this scene from the viewpoint of someone twenty years later.

But this was only 2001; especially for a family in a small town like Angelina’s, giving away two mobile phones as gifts was definitely over-the-top.

Angelina’s parents were also quite shocked.

An entire case of Crown Vodka, which was worth five to six thousand rubles, was already quite generous but was still within acceptable limits.

After all, giving liquor as a gift in Russia was commonplace; Wang Ye had just bought a bit too much.

But phones...

This was too much!

"Misha, why did you buy them phones? They’re too expensive, and they don’t need them," said Angelina’s father in surprise.

"It’s just a communication tool, and it’s not expensive. It’ll make it easier for Angelina to keep in touch with family. Also, Nova is about to go to university; she needs a phone," Wang Ye explained.

Angelina’s father kept shaking his head, but Nova and mom seemed quite thrilled, immediately starting to fiddle with their new phones.

"Thank you, brother-in-law, I love it!" Nova said excitedly, holding her mobile.

It seemed that the gifts were well-received since Nova had upgraded Wang Ye’s title from ’Misha’ to ’brother-in-law’.

"By the way, Nova, how are your college applications going? Are you really going to study in Moscow?" Angelina remembered this and asked.

"Yes, I plan to apply to Friendship University, just like you and brother-in-law, to be your schoolmate, hehe," Nova replied with a laugh.

"With your grades, there shouldn’t be any problem getting in. You could even go to Moscow University if you wanted," Angelina said, nodding her head.

Wang Ye was a bit confused and asked, "If Nova’s grades are that good, why doesn’t she want to go to Moscow University?"

"Brother-in-law, with my grades, I’ll likely get the Education Subsidy if I apply to Friendship University. But although Moscow University would accept me, getting the Education Subsidy there would be almost impossible. The tuition and living expenses are too high there," Nova explained to him.
