Chapter 1043: Chapter 921: Negotiations Break Down
"What... what are you doing?"
Tovesky stared dumbfounded at the people behind Dania, carrying cameras and microphones.
"Oh, they are journalists from the Moscow TV Station and various newspapers and magazines. They’ve come to cover the event live since our Demolition Compensation Negotiations have become a hot news topic recently.
Commissioner Tovesky, you wouldn’t mind the presence of journalists, would you?
After all, what we are discussing is all public and there are no secrets that can’t be exposed."
Dania replied nonchalantly.
This made Tovesky struggle to contain his emotions.
It was supposed to be a negotiation, but here they were, broadcasting live with a group of journalists!
He wanted to leave the scene and cancel the talk.
But in front of the journalists, it was not appropriate to do so. If the journalists reported that, it would seem like he lacked grace...
That’s the downside of having journalists around; it always makes one feel somewhat restricted and unable to act freely!
Having no other choice, Tovesky could only invite everyone to sit down and start the formal negotiations.
......
"Commissioner Tovesky, did you discuss the compensation conditions I proposed on behalf of the homeowners last time?"
As soon as they sat down, Dania took the initiative to ask, seizing the momentum from the start.
Tovesky steadied his emotions; he was an old hand at this and, although Dania had disconcerted him today, he quickly regained his composure.
He forced a smile and said, "Miss Dania, the demands you made last time, they were to give every household a cash compensation of over seven hundred thousand US dollars! Additionally, each household was to receive an apartment of the same size in a high-end building with elevators, and oh, it must be located in the city center!"
The journalists Dania brought with her began to stir a bit, clearly surprised by the conditions Tovesky mentioned.
Dania frowned slightly, somewhat displeased and said, "Commissioner Tovesky, please don’t deliberately mislead everyone. It was clearly..."
Before she could finish, Tovesky interrupted her sharply, "I was merely repeating the demands you made last time, how can that be misleading? Tell me, which of those compensation conditions I mentioned was fabricated?"
Dania was somewhat at a loss for words.
Because these were indeed the conditions she had proposed last time, but Tovesky’s recitation had deliberately emphasized the phrases "seven hundred thousand US dollars," "high-end elevator apartments," and "city center."
Though it wasn’t accurate to say Tovesky was making things up, language is such that even when describing the same thing, different words can create an entirely different impression to outsiders!
If this were reported as Tovesky said, most of the public would probably think these homeowners were too greedy!
An apartment originally allocated as a free house is now demanding compensation of over seven hundred thousand US dollars, plus another high-end apartment in the city center!
The public opinion might shift from sympathy for these homeowners being forcibly relocated to envying and resenting the homeowners for gaining such vast wealth...
It seems after the negotiation ends, she would have to work on these media reporters to prevent them from misreporting!
......
Seeing that she couldn’t gain the upper hand verbally, Dania changed the topic:
"Commissioner Tovesky, let’s get straight to the point. I need to know now whether you can agree to the reasonable demands of our homeowners."
Tovesky felt a headache coming on; this female lawyer was too tough to deal with. Not only was she very assertive in her speech and actions, but she was also a lawyer knowledgeable about the law, citing regulations and legal principles.
And one had to be very careful talking to her, or it was easy to give her an advantage.
Tovesky gathered his spirits and answered with a smile:
"Miss Dania, I must correct you on one point. The demands you made last time were not quite reasonable.
After discussions at our Committee, we believe that you either accept a cash compensation or a new house of the same size, but you cannot have both."
Dania’s brows shot up, and she was visibly upset, abruptly standing as if she was about to walk out.
Tovesky, however, remained seated and watched her calmly.
"If that’s what you think, then I believe there’s no need for further discussion. We clearly cannot reach an agreement, so let’s not waste each other’s time," Dania said coldly, still standing as if ready to leave at any moment.
Tovesky wasn’t intimidated by this; he also understood that it was nearly impossible for both sides to agree.
His side certainly couldn’t make any concessions anymore, as Director Mikhail had already declared this the final compensation plan with no room for negotiation!
Either Dania and her group accepted the compensation plan he proposed,
or both parties would part ways!
As for the subsequent Demolition Work, he believed Director Mikhail must have had a plan...
At this point, Tovesky was tired of beating around the bush; he directly took out a notice stamped with a blue seal and pushed it towards Dania.
He said gravely, "This is the Economic Committee’s final compensation plan for this demolition. All homeowners can choose one of the two options, but there’s no room for negotiation."
