Chapter 1063 - 1061: In Distress

Chapter 1063: Chapter 1061: In Distress

...

The village was covered in mottled bloodstains, as if it had just suffered a calamity.

If Xiaomei were here, Sally could trace the time in this place to see what happened.

Suddenly, she recalled the pack of wolves she encountered upon waking, each covered in blood, and not their own.

Could it be that the village was attacked by those wolves?

Sally continued to walk forward, "Ah!" she suddenly cried out in pain, a shard of broken porcelain had pierced her foot.

Bright red blood oozed out...

Red!

Isn’t she the Creation God? It should be golden Divine Blood!

She suddenly remembered that when giving birth to the egg baby earlier, the blood was also red.

Where has her Divine Power gone? A chilling fear swept through her.

"Who’s there?"

A female voice echoed.

Sally looked towards the sound and saw a girl dressed in coarse cloth and hemp clothes.

Her eyes were blind, gray and lifeless.

"Hello, I’m Sally, passing through in distress. Can you tell me where this is?"

The girl, hearing that Sally was also female, relaxed a bit, "I...I’m called Hong Mei. The day I was born, the old plum tree at the entrance of the village was in full bloom, so my father named me Hong Mei."

"That’s a beautiful name."

"Our village is also called Hongmei Village."

Sally chatted with Hong Mei for a while and learned about what had happened to Hongmei Village.

As she guessed, wild beasts had frequently been attacking the village recently. Hong Mei’s parents and elder brother also met this misfortune.

The villagers had all fled. Due to her blindness, Hong Mei had been abandoned by her uncle and aunt, seen as a burden.

On the escape route, not even good people are guaranteed survival, let alone a blind girl. Hong Mei understood her uncle and aunt’s decision, and she stayed in the village, waiting for those beasts to come and reunite her with her family.

Sally looked into her eyes, "Is your blindness innate or acquired?"

"I went blind after a serious illness at age seven," Hong Mei replied. "By the way, you should leave soon, it’s very dangerous here."

"It’s already very dark out. Traveling at night isn’t safe. Besides, I’m hungry. Are you hungry?" Sally asked.

As soon as she spoke, Hong Mei’s stomach growled as well, and her face turned beet red.

Sally smiled, "I saw some food in the kitchen, can you cook?"

"You can use anything from my home, I’ll help you with the fire," Hong Mei replied.

Sally nodded, "Okay."

Although blind, Hong Mei grew up in this courtyard and knew where everything was. She was especially familiar with tending the fire, something she must have often helped with.

"I have a second brother who went off to join the army seven years ago. If he were here, my parents and elder brother wouldn’t have been in trouble." Hong Mei gazed fixedly into the fire in the stove.

The firelight sparkled in her gray eyes, bringing them to life.

Sally poured the mixed dough lumps into the pot of vegetable soup.

"The deceased are gone, and the living must move forward. You need to grieve and move on, live well. Your parents and brother surely wanted the same. By the way, where is your second brother stationed?"

"My elder brother said his army is called the Zhenyuan Army, and his name is Zhou Xiaoshan."

"Alright, we’ll set out tomorrow to find the Zhenyuan Army."

"Can we?" A hopeful light appeared on Hong Mei’s face.

"Of course we can. I have nowhere to go anyway." Sally smiled, glancing at the egg baby tied behind her... for now, she’s just an ordinary Beastman, survival comes first.

Spotting a chicken coop in the courtyard, Sally went over to take a look.

There were four chickens and eggs in the coop.

Sally couldn’t help but brighten her eyes, opened the coop, and collected the eggs.

There were six eggs. Considering she had just had a child and Hong Mei hadn’t eaten in two days, she cracked all six into the pot.

"There are four chickens in the coop and there were eggs. I collected all the eggs. In times like these, we need to eat better to have the energy to run."

"Yeah, I thought they had been bitten by the beasts."

"We’re lucky, hehe." Sally served Hong Mei three eggs and dumpling soup, and herself a big bowl, "Let’s eat!"

"Sister Su’s cooking is really good!" Hong Mei praised after sipping the soup.

"There’s more in the pot." Sally glanced at the egg baby tied on her back, which seemed to have grown since its birth.

Can she still develop and hatch without the Ancestor Dragon Power?

Thinking about the texture on the eggshell, it’s likely a mouse baby, maybe it might be possible.

The next morning.

Sally changed into old clothes and shoes left behind by Hong Mei’s mother, also made of coarse cloth and hemp, but better than her post-birth robe for coverage. The shoes were large, but she wore them as slippers, better than being barefoot.

She bundled the chickens’ claws and put them in a basket to take along. She also smeared soot from the fireplace on her face, then took a stick to guide Hong Mei out of Hongmei Village.

They had to leave; in the middle of the night, wolves roamed the village, letting out haunting howls.

Sally wasn’t bothered, just turned over and continued sleeping.

Hong Mei was terribly frightened, trembling, and didn’t sleep well at all.

...

After crossing mountains and hills, Sally led Hong Mei to a small town.

Many had fled here too, but some widowed elders stayed, unwilling to leave their roots.

Sally traded the four egg-laying hens she had for some money and durable snacks for the journey.

"No wonder Sister Su didn’t kill those chickens." Hong Mei remarked as Sally sold the hens for eight hundred Copper Coins.

Sally replied, "It’d be a shame to kill them, plus money is more useful. There’s an inn ahead, with shabby doors and windows, and nobody’s around, seems like the owner and staff left too. Let’s go there for shelter. We will continue tomorrow morning, and I’ll ask the old people around here if anyone knows about the Zhenyuan Army."

"Thank you, Sister Su. If it weren’t for you, I’d probably have been eaten by those beasts."

"We help each other, no need to thank me."

Sally settled Hong Mei in a guest room, where there was a pile of bedding and daily necessities, clearly showing the inn’s residents fled hurriedly without handling anything.

Sally left some food and drinks with Hong Mei, advising her to lock the door and sleep after eating. Staying healthy is key on a journey, for illness can be troublesome.

Hong Mei acknowledged all her advice.

Sally didn’t immediately leave the inn but went to the kitchen, finding plenty of fruits, vegetables, and staple items like rice, salt, and oil.

She packed some supplies in baskets.

She hid the rest, in case others also came to scavenge like her.

Walking around the streets carrying food, Sally passed by a blacksmith shop.

Seeing a lame old man working the bellows and forging, she entered.

"Hello sir, I’d like to ask about something and trade these foods for a defensive item," Sally said, pulling two small bags of flour, sweet potatoes, carrots, spring onions, ginger, dried bacon, salt, condiments, four large pears, and a small bottle of sesame oil from the baskets.

The lame proprietor eyed the food and Sally’s soot-covered face, "Take your pick from the wall, what do you want to ask?"
