Chapter 49: Military Academy

Several weeks had passed since Dapper’s wedding with Belinda, and his experience had been nothing short of bliss. Belinda turned out to be an even more doting wife than Ruth. The two of them had been fiercely competing to prove who was the better wife. It even reached a point where they started cooking separately, forcing Dapper to eat both their meals. He nearly lost his shape, but thanks to regular workouts, he maintained it and eventually convinced them to create a cooking schedule instead of going solo.

Today was the day, the day he would be screened at the military academy.

"Will you stop rubbing my dick, Belinda?" Dapper said as he glanced down at her hand tracing the outline of his shaft through his pants.

"Mmm... I’m going to miss you," Belinda murmured in a sultry tone, her face buried in his chest.

"I’ll only be gone for a few days. Once everything’s sorted at the academy, I’ll be a day student," Dapper said, caressing her tits through her dress in return.

Right now, they were en route to the military academy with Fred behind the wheel. Ruth wasn’t with them, she had an urgent matter to handle at the warehouse.

’Madame’s sister and her husband are perverts. Flirting so shamelessly in front of me. I hope they don’t infect my boss with this shamelessness. I need to tell them to get them a new chauffeur. My fragile mind can’t take this,’ Fred thought, swallowing hard and struggling not to peek into the rearview mirror.

"By the way, thanks for handling the new business. It must’ve been a lot for you," Dapper suddenly said, making Belinda sit up straight.

"Ugh, what are you even saying, honey? You came up with all these business ideas and put me in charge of your assets. All our investments—even my sister’s—have tripled in just a few weeks! Honestly, I don’t give a jerk shit about the military, even though I’ve got a combat-type system. I’ve always wanted to run a business like my sister. And now, thanks to you, I can do it even better than people with actual business systems!" Belinda exclaimed, shooting Dapper a look like he had lost his mind for even thanking her.

Dapper gave a small nod at her words. What he did had been pretty simple. He pushed them into cosmetics. In this world, the cosmetic industry was overlooked—nobody paid much attention to it. But with knowledge from his past life, he hired specialists to craft unique products and paid models to advertise them. It was a simple yet effective plan. Their first batch sold out within minutes, and crowds began forming to buy more. The Freeman name quickly rose in fame and spread across Haegia.

The business expanded to all Freeman family stores across the Empire. Now, they were basically the Kardashians of the Haegia Empire—with Ruth, Belinda, and a few others as the brand’s faces. Dapper simply pulled the strings from the shadows.

"My lord, we’ve arrived at the military academy," Fred announced as he slowly parked the car. In front of them was a massive territory surrounded by tall fences Dapper couldn’t see beyond. The entrance was a large, heavily guarded gate, and outside it stood several people, most of them around his age or slightly older.

Dapper stepped out after bidding Belinda farewell, then made his way toward the crowd gathered outside.

As he got closer, he realized there were around a thousand people gathered, which left him stunned. When he reached the crowd, Dapper noticed none of them were being allowed inside for some reason. The guards—fully clad in armor from head to toe—stood blocking the entrance.

Curious and slightly confused, Dapper walked up to a meek-looking boy who stood alone. The boy had yellow hair, was a bit shorter than him, and very slender. From his simple blue leather armor, clearly made from a low-tier monster, Dapper could tell he wasn’t an aristocrat, unlike others wearing fancy gear and expensive weapons. Dapper himself wasn’t in armor either, but wore shape-shifting clothes capable of deflecting slashes to a certain extent.

That was the requirement for the screening, since combat prowess was going to be tested. Dapper had also stocked up a bunch of low-grade weapons in his inventory. Thanks to the space ring Belinda gifted him, he could now freely access his inventory. If he pulled something out of thin air, no one would question it with the ring on.

"Hello, what’s your name?" Dapper asked, lightly tapping the boy. He seemed drained and sluggish as he turned around. His feet were filthy, like he’d walked all the way here.

"Uhn... My name’s Shinro. What about you?" the boy asked with a faint smile.

"The name’s Dapper," he replied.

"Oh, that’s a weird name... So, what do you want from me? Don’t tell me you’re trying to rob me too? That’s all you city people do. I’ve got no money, sorry," Shinro said, his tone suddenly shifting as he tried to walk away.

"Wait, I’m not a thief. If you’re going to walk away, at least answer my question first, please," Dapper said, placing a light hand on Shinro’s shoulder and quickly pulling it back to avoid seeming threatening.

Shinro sighed deeply. "Fine. What do you want?"

"I just want to know why we’re all standing out here. Aren’t we supposed to be inside?" Dapper asked.

"Oh, that’s just how the academy does things every year. Screening starts at 10 a.m. It’s 9:55 now. Didn’t you read the form they gave us? You’ve just given me even more reasons to stay away from you," Shinro replied, attempting to walk off again—only for Dapper to stop him once more.

"Oi, one thing I can’t tolerate is being called a thief. What exactly happened to make you think that?" Dapper asked, genuinely curious.

"Well... I come from a remote village, you see... I’ve a magic-type system, so the village head sponsored me, and the villagers all pitched in to send me here. But on the way, I met someone I thought was another applicant... only for him to rob me of everything. As if that wasn’t enough, another guy showed up pretending to comfort me, only to steal the necklace my mom gave me... and now here you are, pretending to be a friend. Just leave me alone," Shinro muttered, gritting his teeth, fists clenched so tightly they bled.
