Chapter 1233: Chapter 1252: Reluctant to Part
Jiang Yang was by no means inferior to an adult, whether in intelligence or temperament.
Being told to her face that she was not as good as her younger brother, who was still a child, embarrassed Nan Fei a little, but she didn’t want Huo Beijiang to worry, so she nodded earnestly and promised, "Don’t fuss, I, an adult, can certainly take care of myself and my brother."
"I’m relieved. My wife is so smart and steady; I’m very reassured. Huo Beijiang looked at her face, his gaze tracing from her eyebrows, inching past her eyes to her straight, delicate nose, her rosy and tender lips, all the way down to her pointed chin. He wished he could etch her image deeply into his memory.
Eventually, his gaze settled on her forehead, and his large hand gently caressed it, as if holding a rare treasure, fearing that any slight force might shatter it.
Nan Fei met his eyes, wanting to ask what mission he was on, how dangerous it was, and when he would return. But then she remembered his identity; any mission he personally undertook had to be top secret.
So she didn’t ask anything, instead advising, "Be safe, and come back soon. I’ll be waiting for you."
"Okay!" That single word ’okay’ conveyed a choked meaning to Nan Fei, making her heart tremble as if it had been pricked by something sharp, causing an intensely painful throb.
To mask her unease and avoid making the atmosphere as despairing as a life-or-death farewell, she playfully teased, "Are you regretting it now? Who was it that disappeared without a trace for over half a year last time?"
Huo Beijiang’s handsome face flickered with discomfort, but he quickly recovered, answering seriously, "It was different then. I never wanted to make you sad. At that time, I had no choice; I was forced into it by the old man in my family. Now, I have power and freedom, yet I choose to leave because of duty and obligation."
Huo Beijiang’s heart was already bleeding, his internal screams tormented: To choose to leave you at such a time, how can I not feel as if life is worse than death?
He didn’t even dare to imagine whether his wife could wait for his return.
"Major General Huo," Xi Liqun’s guard was so anxious he was practically on fire, and seeing Major General Huo delaying had no choice but to urge him on, despite the reluctance.
"Alright, you go!" Nan Fei took the initiative to push him away, stepping back while giving Huo Beijiang a radiant smile.
But Huo Beijiang couldn’t manage a smile; he felt more like crying.
Eventually, he knew he couldn’t delay any longer. The more he delayed, the less he wanted to go. He was afraid that in a moment of impulse, he would defy military orders and shirk his responsibilities by staying.
If that were the case, then he wouldn’t be Huo Beijiang, and he would dishonor his family name.
"Wait for me to come back," Huo Beijiang looked intensely at Nan Fei one last time and, without turning his head, turned and walked swiftly toward the car.
Xi Liqun’s guards, along with about twenty soldiers, solemnly saluted Nan Fei.
Every military family member deserves respect. Their loved ones, going off to execute missions without regard for their own lives, leave these women to bear the burdens of life alone.
After the crowd had left, the villa’s gate suddenly became quiet. Jiang had come out from inside at some point, his clear eyes fixated on Nan Fei.
Nan Fei squatted down in pain, feeling a faint ache in her head.
"Sister Nan Fei, are you alright?" Jiang hurriedly squatted down, intending to help Nan Fei, but she had already stood up on her own.
"I’m fine, don’t worry."
