Chapter 97: Chapter 0097: Help in Need 1_1
In fact, Feng Qingxue didn’t run into Wang Jiao.
The weather wasn’t good; it remained gloomy for two consecutive days, with a biting northeastern wind bringing the temperature down. Fearing that rain or snow would soon descend, she left her younger sister with her uncle’s family. She went into town, first to mail some items for Lu Jiang, then to deliver grain to Uncle Xu, before providing the Chen Ming family with some oil and fine grain. After visiting Aunt Zhao, she finally picked up some resources for the winter.
Ever since her engagement to Lu Jiang, Feng Qingxue had intermittently given her aunt small goodies, sometimes a couple of eggs, sometimes a pack of brown sugar, other times a handful of noodles.
The items weren’t substantial, but they were undeniably scarce commodities.
Whenever Aunt Feng asked the source of these goods, Qingxue would say they were bought with money and coupons given by Lu Jiang.
Aunt and Uncle Feng were decent people; they took excellent care of Feng Qingyun even when they didn’t receive anything in return. Now that they were receiving these treasures, they were even more attentive.
After Feng Qingxue put away the items she had brought back, she learned from her aunt that Wang Jiao had been trying to find her while picking up Feng Qingyun.
Wang Jiao rarely visited Caohu; Aunt Feng didn’t know her. But she happened to ask at Aunt Feng’s place when she couldn’t find Qingxue, so Aunt Feng came into the know. However, she was unaware of Wang Jiao’s intentions.
"That girl came empty-handed but was wearing new clothes and shoes and had dressed up nicely. She appeared impatient and haughty when she asked if you were home. It didn’t appear that she was here for a familial visit; I sense she might have malevolent intentions. Qingxue, you must be cautious. Even the closest siblings can turn against each other. You have a good marriage, which could lead to envy."
Even though the Lu family wasn’t of high status, Lu Jiang himself was a good catch. He’s good-looking and an officer.
After looking Feng Qingxue up and down, Aunt Feng felt relieved.
Knowing how to dress down means Qingxue is sensible. She isn’t the type who would flaunt her beauty without a care.
She knew how naturally beautiful Feng Qingxue was. Comparing her now, she couldn’t believe it was the same person.
The same facial features, but her skin had become yellow and dark. There were patches of red on her cheeks as if wind-burned, making her look less refined than before. She looked just like any common woman now, even a bit tired and gaunt.
Feng Qingxue knew from the stories her grandmother used to tell that many beautiful young girls had suffered misfortune. Therefore, she dared not reveal her beauty too much and washed her face only when she was meeting Lu Jiang or going out. Most of the time, she would cover her face with a scarf. Now that Lu Jiang was away, she went to great lengths every morning to make herself unattractive – a stark contrast to her real appearance. She still wore her hat and wrapped her face in a scarf when she went out, shunning from unwanted attention.
Makeup has always been the best way to disguise oneself. It can enhance beauty and youth and also disfigure and age a person.
Worried that her beauty might attract trouble after the apocalypse, Feng Qingxue had prepared a lot of makeup tools in her storage space and even learned a few tricks from a friend who was a professional makeup artist.
Even so, she still had to smear a layer of soot on her face when she went out. She didn’t need to mess up her hair now that she was wearing a hat.
After hearing what Aunt Feng had to say, Feng Qingxue just smiled and said she understood. After thanking her aunt, she brought her sister home, gently pushing open the gate of their yard.
The fence was made by Lu Jiang himself before he left, using a thorny stalk for the more than one-meter-high fence, and corn stalks for the gate.
And that was not all. Lu Jiang also paid the nearby villagers to help him refurbish the house inside and out. It had mud walls and a new roof to endure the chilling winter winds and rains.
