Chapter 913: Chapter 0913 Like-minded People 1
The bundles contained several unmounted silk paintings, as well as others that had been removed from their mounts, including meticulous brushwork and ink paintings. The two bundles held a total of seven paintings neatly folded and enveloped in fine silk, further protected by oiled paper and silk cloth wrappers.
Guan Cheng scrutinized each painting carefully, shaking his head, "I don’t remember."
Feng Qingxue peered at them as well, recognizing them as authentic works by ancient masters, the kind whose fame was resounding, with each artist himself an authority in the Calligraphy and Painting World. Works that had survived to the present day were extremely rare, and there was even a Flower and Bird Painting by Song Huizong.
Decades later, any one of these paintings could fetch over a hundred million at an auction.
One of the paintings bore a seal belonging to Guan Kong, a mark left after appraisal. Pointing to this seal, Lu Jiang said to Guan Cheng, "This was left by your grandfather, and whether it is indeed an item of the Guan Family, we cannot be sure at present. Let your aunt commit these paintings to memory. When the opportunity arises, she can inquire with Granny Xu about them."
Granny Xu was the great-aunt of the Guan Family who had some recollection of the famous paintings collected by the family before her marriage.
Guan Cheng hummed in agreement, "Only great-aunt would know."
Another small wooden box was filled to the brim with gold, diamonds, jades, and jewels—old but valuable pieces of jewelry separated from each other by soft cotton cloths to prevent scratching.
After examining them, Guan Cheng shook his head, indicating he did not know their origins.
Feng Qingxue carefully repacked the silk paintings and closed the wooden box, "If we can find their rightful owners, they shall be returned. If not, these items will go to you and Ayu to serve as capital for reviving the Guan Family."
She thought that among these belongings, there should be a part that was of the Guan Family. The possibility that all belonged to the family was not nil, but it was also possible that none did. The most likely scenario was as she had said earlier: someone tasked with looting households might have taken advantage of the chaos to keep the valuables for themselves, hiding them in the secret compartment of their own bed. As a result, ten or so years later, they now faced the karma of their own house being raided.
Upon hearing Feng Qingxue’s reasoning, Guan Cheng waved his hands hurriedly, "No, no, Auntie, I and Ayu cannot bear this responsibility."
The Lu Family had taken them in and provided them with care and education. The kindness shown to him and his brother was immense. How could they accept belongings that Lu Jiang and Feng Qingxue had risked acquiring from a recycling station, even if they had once belonged to the Guan Family? He did not feel entitled to keep them.
"What can’t you bear? Aren’t you and Ayu our children? Although Xibao and Fubao are our biological children, there is no difference between you and them, except that you are now older and don’t require our worry in every aspect. In the future, when you start families and businesses, your uncle and I will be responsible until the end, and this includes Tianjun and Tianzhi. What belongs to the Guan Family belongs to the Guan Family. The calligraphy, paintings, and seals complement the family—they are not for us to keep for ourselves."
Feng Qingxue said all this in one breath and then slapped the table, "That settles it. Your uncle and I are good at hiding things. We’ll keep them safe for you for now, and when things calm down, we’ll hand them over to you. After all, our family still attracts a bit of dangerous attention right now."
Guan Cheng opened his mouth to reply, but Lu Jiang cut him off, "Just listen to your aunt!"
Even though the items before them were valuable, and the silk paintings were masterpieces, unique treasures, they weren’t the Lu Family’s property, thus harboring no thoughts of claiming them for themselves. Returning them to their rightful owners was the most appropriate solution.
Guan Cheng only wanted to keep the seal, but knowing further words were futile, stood up and deeply bowed to Lu Jiang and Feng Qingxue.
