Chapter 909: Chapter 0909: Visiting Relatives and Friends 7

Hearing the unusual tone in Lu Jiang’s voice, Feng Qingxue quickly set aside the treasure-hunting work she was doing, moved to his side, and swiftly collected the small bundle and wooden boxes he had dug out from the secret compartment of the bunk bed into the space.

The couple was particularly careful, with Lu Jiang blocking the view of outsiders so that no one noticed their subtle movements.

Under the pressure of time, Qingxue didn’t ask questions; after securing the items, she went back to the pile of waste paper.

Although a large part consisted of ancient texts and paintings, the most valuable items only made up a very small portion. Fearing discovery, Qingxue naturally only chose the latter. If the opportunity arose, she would buy the rest later.

However, Qingxue felt the chances were slim since those items would probably be sent to the paper mill soon.

Her mind worked quickly, and her hands were not slow either.

As the sun set, the light grew dimmer, making it easier to fish in troubled waters. Even though Qingxue continued to speed up, she had only gone through half of the waste paper pile.

Looking at the remaining unchecked pile of waste paper, a hint of regret showed in Qingxue’s eyes.

Lu Jiang had already taken apart a bunk bed and two cabinets.

Qingxue approached, and while no one was looking, she quickly collected two pieces of good quality wood furniture and several small items from under a pile of messy lumber into the space. Because they were piled chaotically and Lu Jiang had disassembled some furniture, it wasn’t noticeable that a small part was missing.

"It feels wrong to be stealing from the recycling station like this," Qingxue said, thrusting several gold bars into Lu Jiang’s palm. "Hold onto these and later tell Uncle Li you found them in a drawer while taking apart the furniture. Don’t mention the secret compartment and ask Uncle Li to hand them over to the state for national construction," Qingxue suggested. "With this advantage, and Uncle Li being recognized for his merit, he will definitely open doors for us."

Uncle Li was indeed pleasantly surprised, "This is thanks to you guys. I took apart several pieces of furniture and never came across something this good. It’s really because you are honest. If it were other people, they might not have told me."

Those gold bars must weigh one or two hundred grams; at five yuan a gram, they were worth seven or eight hundred.

Handing them over was certainly a great achievement, and as expected, Uncle Li no longer cared what Lu Jiang and Feng Qingxue picked through at the recycling station. "We’re closing in over half an hour, pick some more and then come weigh it," he said.

With thanks, Lu Jiang and Feng Qingxue no longer focused on the furniture wood but headed straight for the waste paper pile and scrap metal.

Although Lu Jiang did not follow in his father’s footsteps, he had been influenced by his family since childhood and had extraordinary vision and speed. His hands moved so fast they were a blur, sorting valuable items and sending them to his wife, leaving her to collect them in the space.

Reminded again by Uncle Li, the pair reluctantly took their finds to be weighed.

A pile of textbooks, a heap of assorted lumber, a few pieces of scrap metal – Uncle Li didn’t even ask questions before tallying up their account and even helped load the goods onto the mule cart, securing them with hemp rope.

Concerned about the mule cart being too weighed down, Lu Jiang and Feng Qingxue didn’t board; instead, they walked alongside the cart.

Once they were out of the city, it had already grown dark.

Feng Qingxue took out a flashlight to illuminate the path. After walking a little further and ensuring no one was around, she swiftly collected everything from the cart into the space. After feeding the mule a good meal and giving it water, they hurried home.

Finally having a moment to wash their hands and sit in the cart to eat, Qingxue brought out a pile of tasty treats.

Tearing off a big chicken leg from the roast chicken, she handed it to Lu Jiang and asked, "How did you find the hidden compartment in the bunk bed?"
