Chapter 783: Chapter 0783: Schadenfreude 2_1
The old leader listened to Lu Jiang and gave a faint smile, "When the time comes, regardless of whether the matter is resolved or not, you must come back to attend the conference. Such an important meeting cannot proceed without you. Let Xiaocui stay behind to deal with the remaining matters."
Lu Jiang immediately understood that he was being asked to lead the charge, "Alright alright, we’re all at ease when Xiaocui is handling things."
If the old leader was reassured, so were they. After all, Cui Shaoyuan was not one to harbor ill intentions.
After uttering these words, Lu Jiang said, "In this case, it can’t be just me and Xiaocui who go. With all these tasks piled up together, plus the need for covert investigations, we’ll have to bring more people."
They had to redeploy since the people who had been in charge of this work before were not them.
"Take along those who work under Xiaocui and handle matters in this area. Are there any female comrades? When male comrades can’t appear, let them do it, especially since it involves spouses of high-ranking military officers. Before the final judgement is made, we must show respect." The old leader said, "I’m entrusting this important matter to you, I don’t trust others to handle it."
He frowned slightly, thinking about something.
Lu Jiang didn’t notice this, but Cui Shaoyuan did, and he quickly responded with a smile, "We will definitely live up to the old leader’s trust!"
The old leader waved his hand, telling them to go back and prepare, "Don’t let someone with ulterior motives tip off the other side."
As he stepped out of the old leader’s house, Lu Jiang said to Cui Shaoyuan: "Let’s act quickly. It would be best if we could return before the conference starts. If not, I’ll have to trouble you, Xiaocui."
"Eliminating corrupt individuals for the country is an honor, not a burden." Cui Shaoyuan replied with a smile.
Many senior officers of the border defense forces have complex relationships with the national leaders, so who wouldn’t want to act swiftly?
Lu Jiang looked at him for a full half minute, "Alright, alright, you’re right. Should we send a few people to investigate the hometowns of these high-ranking officers before leaving? According to the letter of accusation, some family members are flaunting their husbands’ military positions, getting preferential treatment in their hometowns, and often obtaining counterfeit processed goods."
"That’s a must." Cui Shaoyuan said.
The individual that Lu Jiang was referring to was none other than Chen Ju.
Just by looking at the handwriting of this anonymous letter, one could tell it was from a woman. The contents were rather detailed, with things like lamb blankets, towels, enamel pots, snow cream, etc., all present in the houses of both the Jiang Family and Qi Gang. It was stated that Chen Ju owned five watches, three imported and two domestic, a sewing machine, radio, and bicycle back home. She had brought new fabrics and shoes to the military base and changed her attire frequently. It was claimed these were purchased processed goods, but the fabrics didn’t have uneven dyeing or worn edges.
The letter also reported a situation where Chen Ju arrived at the military base, discovered the superior conditions of the base compared to outside, especially the vast array of goods at the military canteen. There were many expensive items that were not available in her hometown’s department stores. Every now and then, she would lament in front of the lower-ranking military officers and soldiers about her young son requiring nutritional supplements.
Many soldiers caught her insinuations and felt obligated to give their supply quotas to Chen Ju. Chen Ju was not satisfied though, and in the end, several soldiers ended up purchasing items such as malt essence and luncheon meat for her son, Qi Xiang.
Accusations of soliciting bribes were explicitly made against Chen Ju in the letter.
Actually, wasn’t the main target of these accusations Qi Gang and Chen Ju? According to the letter, the things owned by the Jiang Family paled in comparison to what was in Qi Gang’s household. Those three imported watches alone would be worth a fortune! If they were Rolex or Omega, even a thousand wouldn’t be enough.
