Just like Feng Qingxue predicted, the daughter-in-law, granddaughter and Wang Fengqiao were well looked after. Besides helping with the diaper chores, Lu’s father mostly focused on spending time with Xibao. They wanted to go for another walk, but it snowed during the night. The next morning, the world was covered in silver frost.

The winter wind howled all around as the snow continued to fall.

Feng Qingxue and Fubao stayed indoors, while Xibao was super excited. All bundled up like a little bear cub, he ran around the yard pulling Lu’s father with him, while getting covered in a layer of white snow. "Grandpa! Snow! Snow! Dada! Grandpa!" he exclaimed.

Thinking of his son who he had not seen for a long time, Lu’s father felt a lump in his throat. "Why did Xibao suddenly think of his father?"

"Snow!" Xibao yelled loudly.

"When we were at the border defense troop, Ajiang made a snowman for Xibao when it snowed. So now when he sees it snowing, he thinks of Ajiang," Feng Qingxue explained from inside the house, with her voice slowly fading as she thought of Lu Jiang, whom she hadn’t seen in months.

Lu’s father immediately started making a snowman for his grandson.

He used clay blocks for eyes, a red pepper for the nose, an old piece of cloth for a scarf, and a hessian sack for a cape that was previously used for carrying chickens.

"Snowman!"+ Xibao walked over to the snowman, reached out his tiny hand and pushed it, knocking the head off instantly. He was scared and took a few steps back, then fell down. He clumsily got up, covered up his bottom and said, "Cold!"

Lu’s father burst out laughing, squatted down, and patted off the snow on his bottom. "Isn’t it supposed to be cold if you sit on the snow?"

"It fell off, grandpa. It fell off," Xibao pointed at the head of the snowman that had rolled off.

It not only fell off but also broke apart.

"Um, it fell off. Grandpa will make another head for it."

While Lu’s father was rolling a snowball, he suddenly heard a knock on the door. He thought it was Wang Fengqiao returning from the grocery store, so he said absentmindedly, "The door is bolted. Come on in!"

"Come in!" Xibao echoed in a duet.

The door was pushed open, and a head wearing a Lei Feng hat peeked in. The big round eyes carefully inspected the people in the yard. Seeing Xibao, the body in the military cotton-padded jacket eventually came in. "I thought I had the wrong place when I heard a voice answering the door, but seeing Xibao, I knew I was right! Xibao, Sister is here to see you!"

Xibao turned around, gave a yell, and excitedly shrieked, "Sister!" He immediately left Lu’s father, running towards Jiang Xiaoyue like a rocket. However, because of the thickness of the snow, he stepped into a place where the snow was deeper and became stuck.

"Sister! Grandpa!" Xibao was almost crying out of panic.

Jiang Xiaoyue hastily put down the bamboo basket she was carrying, pulled Xibao out of the snow, and dusted off the snowflakes on him.

"Why are you in such a hurry, Xibao? Sister isn’t going anywhere!"

Xibao hugged her waist and laughed heartily.

Jiang Xiaoyue then greeted Lu’s father, "Hello, old comrade. My name is Jiang Xiaoyue, and I’m a good friend of Qingxue."

"Grandpa!" Xibao pointed at Lu’s father who had now stood up.

"Are you Xibao’s grandpa?" Seeing that Xibao was pointing at his own head that was donning a mink hat, Jiang Xiaoyue quickly corrected herself, "Lu...considering you look even younger than my father, I’ll call you Uncle Lu, Uncle Lu, nice meeting you."

Lu’s father responded with a smile, "Lady Xiaoxue and Fubao are inside the house. Let’s go inside and talk, don’t stay outside in the cold."
