Chapter 630: Chapter 0630: Military First, Medicine Later1_1

What is a military doctor?

"All doctors, medical soldiers, sanitary workers and any other military personnel involved in medical services can be called military doctors. A military doctor is a soldier first and a doctor second, or you could say a soldier who supports with medical skills. We are very different from the cultural civil servants of the art troupe who sing and dance, and also different from the civil servants working in military offices." This is not something Guo Xiuying said, but the words of Wang Sanbao, a senior member within the medical corps.

Feng Qingxue is proficient in traditional Chinese medicine, and she is, of course, skilled in emergency care, treatment of wounds, and bone setting. However, she is well aware that surgical operations, including those on the battlefield, are her weak points — she has no experience whatsoever.

So, as soon as her job was settled, she asked for training.

Guo Xiuying highly valued her and specially arranged for Wang Sanbao, a veteran military doctor with over thirty years of experience, to mentor her.

Mentorship here refers to guidance and instruction.

Wang Sanbao is a typical heroic figure among military medical staff. He often shuttles through gunfire, has witnessed the bloodshed on the battlefield, saved many casualties, and watched many comrades never return to their hometowns. His mental health was affected after his first major battle, and it took a long time for him to recover. Ultimately, he decided never to marry.

To never marry is a characteristic shared by many military medical staff, including those internationally.

After hearing Wang Sanbao’s explanation of a military doctor, Feng Qingxue asked, "When you say ’soldier first, doctor second,’ does it mean that just like soldiers, we are required to participate in regular training when not providing medical services? Like managing internal affairs, military training, studying guiding ideologies?"

Her first thought was the military training. She had participated in military training three consecutive times during junior high, senior high, and college.

Each time lasted seven to eight days, reducing them all to tears on leaving the camp.

Many junior high schools didn’t offer military training, but somehow she had an eight-day training before starting junior high school. Only her graduating class had this training, on the school premise. It wasn’t like the training she later had in high school and college, which were in the military camp, thereby giving her a real taste of the soldiers’ daily life.

What Feng Qingxue mentioned happened to be the training content for ordinary soldiers in the army. Upon hearing this, Wang Sanbao burst into laughter, "Seems like you’ve already got a deep understanding, huh? What you said is absolutely right. The difference is that soldiers receive military training, but we learn about medical skills."

"After all, I did live in the barracks for quite some time, how could I not understand at all?" Feng Qingxue replied with a grin.

Wang Sanbao nodded, "That’s correct. We get up in the morning and start with our exercises, come back for housekeeping, cleaning, personal hygiene, and the remaining time before meals is yours. Considering that you are pregnant and living in the family compound, we’ve agreed that you can be temporarily exempted from participating in morning and evening training sessions, but it’s important to note, you can’t slack off during daytime sessions."

"Don’t worry! I know what I need to do." Feng Qingxue responded very seriously. She wouldn’t miss this rare learning opportunity and was keen to acquire more practical skills, which could only be to her benefit.

Today is her first day at her new job. Once her paperwork was processed, she could receive her belongings. When Guo Xiuying came back with her uniform, first aid kit, and other gear, he saw Wang Sanbao testing Qingxue’s first aid skills. Xibao sat obediently on one side, playing with a grasshopper, behaving quietly. The chubby toddler looked adorable.
