The army, however, after some discussion, began to prepare housing for the soldier’s families. An empty plot on the edge of the barracks was designated as the family housing area. Due to limited conditions, the family housing was not initially planned to be separated from the barracks.

In this remote highland area, the construction of family housing naturally falls to the soldiers.

Sang Hong told Feng Qingxue: "Ma’am, you can’t boil water here. We usually cook it for a bit longer before drinking it. So we have to take shortcuts for cooking, often using buffalo dung as fuel, or pan-frying or roasting food, barley and rice, and infrequent stewing. There aren’t many alternatives for firewood in the plateau area. During summer and autumn, some coal is transported over during the replenishment deliveries, but it’s not enough, so buffalo dung is used most of the time. Don’t underestimate buffalo dung, here in the highlands, it’s quite a treasure!"

"Where do you get buffalo dung?" Feng Qingxue asked curiously.

Since she arrived at the barracks, Feng Qingxue hadn’t wandered outside. She only spent her time between her quarters and the mess hall, occasionally watching the soldiers training with Xibao from the sidelines. But she noticed structures like the horse stables and cowsheds in the distance.

Sang Hong laughed: "We are a combat team, a work team, and a production team!"

"Aside from training and being prepared for combat, we have to grow our own grass to take care of the horses and cattle. All units have tasks to grow barley, vegetables in the valley dips, potatoes which grow easily and give a good harvest. Though there aren’t many green vegetables, we try to improve the living conditions of the troops and lessen the burden on the state," Sang Hong explained.

Feng Qingxue was deeply moved, "It’s hard on you."

Sang Hong rubbed his head, "Not at all, ma’am, truly, compared to our previous lives, the situation is much better now."
