Chapter 348: Chapter 0348: Feng Xue Returns 2_1
"Acheng, look after Xibao for me. I’m going to make his food." At over seven months, we can’t just rely on breast milk and formula. He should begin to have some solid food.’
Guan Cheng understood and immediately took Xibao back.
Leaving the fragrant, soft embrace, Xibao began to whimper. Lu Tianjun quickly picked up a pellet drum and shook it in front of him. This drum, which he and Guan Cheng had bought for twenty cents at a used goods market, had probably belonged to a wealthy family. It was beautifully crafted in rosewood and red lacquer with double-sided painted images, the colors bright and alluring, soon grabbing Xibao’s attention. His tears were rapidly put away.
"It seems that children like bright colors. Next time we’ll try to find something interesting," Guan Cheng said, looking down at Xibao’s chubby white face, unable not to give his cheek a little kiss.
Lu Tianjun nodded with a smile. He loved his little brother more than anyone. The child was so adorable that everyone who saw him couldn’t help but like him.
Feng Qingxue felt reassured and went to the kitchen.
Xibao had a good appetite. He’d had egg soup for breakfast and for lunch, she’d prepare pumpkin porridge.
On the stove, in a large pot, she was cooking pumpkin rice for everyone -- a few handfuls of brown rice, a large chunk of pumpkin with the skin still on, as she poured in water and left it to simmer.
Next to this pot, in a small clay one, there was white rice and diced pumpkin that she’d removed the skin from. This was Xibao’s pumpkin porridge, being cooked over a low heat. Gradually, the fragrance filled the kitchen.
Taking advantage of the gaps while she was cooking the porridge, Feng Qingxue also quickly cooked a pot of cabbage. She began with a bit of lard, which resulted in a very appetizing aroma.
The cabbage was ready, and so was the porridge.
Feng Qingxue turned off the stove, scooped the porridge into a bowl, using a silver soup spoon to mix the pumpkin and the blooming grains of rice into a paste. The bowl was filled with a golden color.
The weather was bitterly cold and by the time she carried the porridge from the kitchen to the main room on the east side, it had become just warm enough to eat.
"Acheng, in the pot there’s the pumpkin rice and the cabbage stew. Call grandma and grandpa over. They can serve themselves. " Feng Qingxue took Xibao, had him sit on the bed, leaning against stacked up comforters, and spoon-fed him. He ate with big gulps, and if Feng Qingxue was a bit slow, he would cry out, his appetite was excellent.
Just as Guan Cheng and the others were about to leave the living room, a man suddenly climbed over the wall. Immediately, he shouted, "Who’s that?"
An intruder? Such nerve to sneak in over the wall when he should have knocked or come through the main entrance. Take this!" Lu Tianjun promptly grabbed a thick club that was leaning against the wall next to the door and swung it at full force at the newcomer. But the intruder reached out his right hand and caught it.
"Good lad. It’s been over a year but you dare to strike at me!" The man grinned, showing gleaming white teeth.
His face was dark and full of chapped skin caused by exposure to severe cold; his cheeks were flushed red, creating a stark contrast with his teeth.
"Uncle?" Lu Tianjun recognized the voice. He took a closer look and nearly jumped out of his skin. The man before him, dressed in tattered clothes as dark and thin as a beggar, his hair and body covered in icicles, was his uncle Lu Jiang, who had left home not long after getting married to join the army and had not returned ever since. His appearance had changed significantly!
"Who else could it be?" Lu Jiang replied in teasing tone.
Lu Tianjun put down the club, "Uncle, why didn’t you come through the main entrance? You scared me half to death climbing over the wall."
After feeding Xibao, Feng Qingxue vaguely noticed some commotion outside. The doors and windows were insulated with thick cotton curtains and felt mats, so despite the noise, she couldn’t clearly hear what was happening. She placed the bowl down, picked up Xibao, and walked into the living room, "Tianjun, who is that making all that noise?"
No sooner had she spoken than the felt mat hanging over the door was lifted, "Qingxue, I’m back!"
