Chapter 290: Chapter 0290: Don’t you miss me 2_1

No one likes to lose face. Given the chance, everyone would want to put on a show for their family.

Feng Aihua had his bicycle cleaned to the point of immaculate shine - it was virtually indistinguishable from a new one. Fearful that it might be stolen, he wheeled it into the new room overnight. Tied to its handlebars the next morning was a bright red flower; under the sunlight, it was a delightful sight to behold, drawing the attention of many curious onlookers.

Regretfully, even though they had already seen it before Feng Qingxue’s wedding, they couldn’t help but sneak additional glances.

Dressed in an old military uniform, Feng Aihua wore sturdy, three-sectioned leather shoes and a small red flower pinned to his chest. To Feng Qingxue, his open-mouthed happiness seemed somewhat foolish, but to everyone else, he seemed to be the epitome of health and good looks.

"Good for you, Aihua! You are the most handsome groom today!"

"Let’s go greet the bride!"

The bridal party was not particularly large. Other than the groom, there was only the party leader, Feng Teng, and a few young men. All of them were on foot.

As the group of young men escorted Feng Aihua down the bridal path and faded into the distance, Feng Qingxue gently tugged at Ma Haiyan’s gown, "Sister-in-law, is that it? Isn’t there a donkey cart on their way?"

Last night, she had shared her room with Feng Qingyun and Ma Haiyan, while Feng Aizhong had stayed with his brothers in another room.

After a night of small talk, in addition to the bond they had formed, Feng Qingxue felt comfortable enough to ask her questions directly.

Ma Haiyan responded quietly, "My sister, when you got married, you left with several carts of dowries. Do you think every girl has a dowry? I didn’t have one, and neither does your second sister-in-law. The matchmaker had already told my in-laws in advance that your second sister-in-law doesn’t have any dowry. If we followed her with an empty donkey cart, who would look good? It’s better if they just walk."

Feng Aihua’s wife was called Guang Xiuying. Not only did she not have a dowry, but she also didn’t even have proper clothes to wear.

On such a cold day, she was just wearing cloth clothing patched from scraps here and there. With thin, yellow hair and a pale face, she sat side-saddle on the bicycle’s rear seat in an oversized old military jacket – appearing rather ill at ease. Feng Aihua, riding the bicycle, was left wearing an old padded jacket and military trousers.

The young men who went with the groom later shared privately that Guang Xiuying was shivering from the cold when she left her home, her face had turned bluish, and her feet were clad in worn-out straw shoes. Luckily, the military uniform was made of wool, which could block the wind. Otherwise, Feng Aihua would have taken off his padded jacket for her to wear.

Feng’s second aunt immediately opened her box, found her old padded jacket and pants, and told Guang Xiuying to go inside and change.

Seeing this, Ma Haiyan quickly took off her cloth shoes and gave them to her to wear.

Once Guang Xiuying had changed her clothes, Feng Aihua once again put on his military uniform, and under the direction of Feng Shuanzhu, started the ceremony and offered toasts.

Only later on did Feng Qingxue learn from other people’s gossip that Guang Xiuying had lost her parents when she was eleven. She had a younger brother and sister to look after. Her brother was five years younger than her, her sister a year younger. Now that her sister had married off first, and her brother was thirteen, she agreed to marriage. The only condition was two hundred jin of grain – just so that there would be more food left for her brother after she was married.

"She’s a good child, hardworking and kind-hearted. Her family might be poor, but we don’t mind," Feng’s second aunt said to Feng Qingxue, who was eating her meal by the stove and didn’t want to join the table. "Sure, in the future, Aihua will help her brother a little bit, but we won’t say anything! After all, that’s what life is about, right? Helping each other out."

Feng Qingxue had realised this a while ago – if the family truly minded, her second uncle would never have agreed to the marriage.
