Chapter 278: Chapter 0278 String-Pulling Trade 2_1

During dinner, Feng Qingxue did not mention the incidents that had occurred that day because she did not want the three children to know. Guan Cheng and Lu Tianjun seemed to share the same thought, remaining silent on the matter. It wasn’t until the next day when everyone had gone off to school or out the door for their tasks, under broad daylight in the cowshed, while feeding the mules, did Feng Qingxue begin to disclose the matter about the bracelet to Father Lu.

A flash of surprise passed through Father Lu’s eyes and he blurted out, "How is that possible?"

The Dragon and Phoenix Bracelet with the embedded ruby should have been with Miao Fengqin, how could it turn up in town? The Wang family wasn’t so hard-pressed that they would resort to selling off their possessions. He wasn’t oblivious to the true state of Wang Zhengguo’s wealth and he knew Miao Fengqin wouldn’t be foolhardy enough to bring it out.

Feng Qingxue found this very odd on hearing this.

"Father, why do you say that? Wasn’t it looted when our house was raided? It isn’t implausible that somebody took advantage of the chaos and it ended up on the outside."

"That’s one way to see it, but I know who took the bracelet. Now, you suddenly bring one of them back from outside, it’s only natural that I’m surprised. According to my prediction, they wouldn’t resort to selling something like this."

"Who took the bracelet?" Feng Qingxue asked curiously.

Father Lu shook his head, remaining silent.

All that happened in the past serves no purpose in mentioning it now, and no one could outrightly declare Miao Fengqin - the one who took the bracelet - to be entirely at fault.

Moreover, to preserve the face of Wang Zhengguo and out of respect for the relationship that he shares with Feng Qingxue, he couldn’t bring himself to reveal this and cause a rift within the family.

Feng Qingxue recalled something that Wang Zhengguo had once mentioned, "Could it be Zhao Dazhu?"

"Zhao Dazhu?" Father Lu was taken aback at first, but then chuckled, "During the years of the looting, he indeed was one of the forerunners."

For years, Zhao Dazhu had been thriving on the wealth he acquired from the Lu family.

Feng Qingxue understood that Father Lu didn’t wish to talk about it any further, so she didn’t press him. Pursuing these matters at present did not hold much significance. After all, the universe maintains a vigilant watch over all actions.

"If father doesn’t want to talk about it, then I won’t inquire further. Tomorrow, I’ll visit the town myself and try to exchange some of our grain with Shen Feihong to hopefully get the other bracelet back," Feng Qingxue proposed her plan, "Since sister-in-law insisted on passing it down to her daughter-in-law, it cannot be allowed to lie astray. If we can’t reclaim it, Tianjun would perpetually be bothered by it."

"Material things are fleeting and Tianjun would understand that. We still have our possessions and you’re carrying a child..."

Feng Qingxue interrupted hastily, "Father, I’m alright, I’m not that delicate. Moreover, anything that belongs to our family, even trivial papers or grass, mustn’t be overlooked when we have an opportunity to retrieve them. In the future, when your grandchildren have grown up, we can show it to them as evidence while recounting our family history, it would help to broaden their perspective."

Father Lu’s eyes suddenly grew moist at this.

True to her word, the very next day Feng Qingxue woke up early and entered the city to inquire about Shen Feihong. Everyone she asked seemed to know him, and one of them advised, "He usually isn’t around until it’s time to eat. He won’t be home at this hour, but you could roam around the black market, you might run into him there."

Feng Qingxue didn’t really understand what they meant, but today she was wearing old clothes and with her face and hands covered in soot, she wasn’t afraid to venture into the black market again.

The black market was bustling with quite a crowd, and one glance around revealed the presence of many old farmers.

Just as Shen Feihong had mentioned, the farmers did have grains at hand, and whenever they lacked the money or tickets, they would come to the black market to trade with the city folks.
