Chapter 253: Chapter 0253: August Fifteenth 1_1

Feng Qingxue originally thought that the gifts she brought were insufficient, but given the current circumstances, she dared not bring more. How could she possibly take back half of them? Try as they might, Uncle Feng and Aunt Feng still refused to accept them all.

With a quick decision, Feng Qingxue tossed the meat and biscuits into the courtyard, then turned around and left with Feng Qingyun.

Once they had left, Aunt Feng was unable to take the gifts out and chase after them to return them.

Taking them outside would mean exposing them to others, wouldn’t it? This was a time when even eating meat required discretion and secrecy.

Aunt Feng helplessly let her husband bring the gifts inside, then went out to see off Sister Qingxue and Qingyun. "You’re married now, with a large family to care for. Keep the good things for yourself. Don’t keep giving everything to us. Even though our lives in Caohu Brigade aren’t as good as those in Wanglou Brigade, we certainly won’t starve in the latter half of this year."

Her words echoed those of Old Lady Xu.

"I understand, Auntie." Feng Qingxue didn’t have her parents here anymore. Her visits here would only be during times of celebration or to burn offerings to her parents. Apart from the two gifts she would send to her aunt and uncle during Mid-Autumn Festival and before Spring Festival, she wouldn’t visit without a good reason.

Aunt Feng nodded. "Don’t worry about the vegetables from the private plot. I’ve dried everything that can be dried, and pickled whatever needed pickling. I’ve even planted new crops. Once the autumn harvest is over, we’ll deliver the fresh vegetables and the grains from the brigade to your place, along with your Uncle and your Brother. You have a work point, so you’ll naturally get your share of the grain."

"That’s very kind of you, Auntie and Uncle!" Feng Qingxue wouldn’t complain about less grain. "Auntie, you don’t need to see us off. Please go home."

Aunt Feng stopped walking. "Alright then, take care on your journey home."

With a straw hat on her head and a blue kerchief half-covering her face, Feng Qingxue began the trek home with her sister. Aunt Feng watched them for a long while before turning to return home to organize the piece of meat, planning to save it for the busy farming season. Just as she approached her front door, however, the sound of loud cursing reached her. Intrigued, she paused to listen, and upon hearing the content, quickly ran towards the source of the noise.

"It’s as good as having not raised them at all, would’ve been better off drowning them in the toilet! They can’t even see their own brother and sister-in-law, instead treating those distant uncles and aunts like parents! There are shameless people who have no self-respect! Don’t they fear suffocating to death from overeating!"

Zhao Guihua dared not berate Feng Qingxue when she was present. Only when she found out that Feng Qingxue had left Caohu Brigade did she dare to voice her grievances.

She stood at the entrance of her own straw-thatched hut, hands on hips, her face directed towards Uncle Feng and Aunt Feng’s house, like a teapot ready to whistle.

The passing villagers all knew that she was criticizing Feng Qingxue, Uncle Feng, and Aunt Feng merely because Feng Qingxue had given her uncle and aunt some gifts. Some villagers stayed to listen and watch the commotion while others shook their heads, calling it a day, and went off to do their own things.

The mind is like a mirror, you as a sibling are doing nothing, why blame others?

Yes, by tradition, in the first year after marriage, the younger Feng Qingxue should have given something to her elder brother and sister-in-law. However, it was Uncle Feng and Aunt Feng who ran every errand for Feng Qingxue’s wedding, while the brother didn’t even show his face. Even if the younger sister gave them something, would they dare accept it? They should beware of choking to death from greed.

The more Zhao Guihua scolded, the more excited she became, sputtering and looking fierce. "Our family’s daughter, raised with such hard work, has been taken advantage of by shameless people. If you want a daughter, go ahead and give birth to one. You aren’t too old to have children. Why seize somebody else’s daughter?"
