Chapter 234: Chapter 0234: Great Surprise 2_1
Toilet paper coupons?
Sanitary pad coupons?
Feng Qingxue clearly understood the meaning of toilet paper coupons; it meant she could buy toilet paper with the coupon, but what exactly was a sanitary pad coupon?
When she received the three coupons, Feng Qingxue finally remembered. Her face turned as red as the dawn sun.
Aunt Xu felt a little embarrassed as well and, noticing Feng Qingxue’s acceptance of the coupons, tried to shift to another topic. However, she quickly noticed that Feng Qingxue seemed lost in thought, expressing an astonished look. She couldn’t help but ask, "Is there something wrong?"
Feng Qingxue snapped back to reality and whispered, "I did not get my period last month."
If not for Aunt Xu giving her the sanitary pad coupon, Feng Qingxue, busier than ever, would have forgotten about this matter entirely.
"You didn’t get your period?" Aunt Xu initially did not get it and asked in confusion. Although she too was a woman and had experience with childbirth, she quickly grasped the implication, her face breaking into a joyous expression, "Could it be that you’re pregnant? Was your cycle regular before?"
She had a reason to ask the question. Owing to an inadequacy of food, undernourishment was common, resulting in unpredictable menstrual cycles among the women she knew. Some of them had irregular periods, while others would only get them once every two or three months. Some girls even had their first period around their late teens or early twenties. It was considered a taboo topic and often not discussed openly.
Feng Qingxue softly replied, "I am usually very regular. Last month was the eighth month of the solar calendar. I got it on the thirtieth day of the seventh month, the day of our wedding discussions. Otherwise, I would not have agreed to get married on the ninth of August, which falls on the twenty-eighth of the sixth month of the lunar calendar. Today is already the twelfth of September." She was already late by over ten days.
She had paid special attention to her nutrition in the past year. It began irregularly but turned regular during the latter half of the year, precisely every month.
"I’ll take you to a doctor to check your pulse!" Aunt Xu immediately packed up her things, locked her door, and led Feng Qingxue to a workers’ clinic in the city. She sought help from an old, familiar Chinese doctor with whom she seemed to share a good relation.
They did not visit the clinic in the mining district because it was situated not in the city but near the coal factories outside the city.
Upon examining her, the old Chinese doctor spent only half a minute and, stroking his beard, joyously announced, "Congratulations! Your pulse does match that of a pregnant woman. It’s been more than twenty days, albeit less than a month. Your pulse is strong and steady, indicating good health. If you find my diagnosis doubtful, you should pay extra attention to your diet and come back for another check-up in two weeks, or consult any other doctor."
Aunt Xu had initially been thrilled for Feng Qingxue. On hearing this, she laughed heartily, "You are a respected old doctor who, at one time, treated hundreds of patients a day, with people practically wearing out your doorstep. If we can’t trust you, whom should we trust? If you say it is so, it definitely is."
Feng Qingxue remained still, her hand gently brushing her lower abdomen, in awe at the realization that she was truly pregnant.
Upon exiting the hospital, Aunt Xu told her, "This old doctor, surnamed Li, was the family physician of an old friend of your uncle and me. Our friend was a capitalist, and you’re aware of it. His family was incredibly wealthy, with a vast business empire and many descendants. As such, their family physician was a highly renowned doctor with exceptional medical skills. Following the establishment of the People’s Republic, Doctor Li was not persecuted. Considering his medical expertise, he was assigned by the government to this workers’ clinic in the city where officials of all levels sought medical treatment."
In other words, there was no doubt about Doctor Li’s diagnosis.
