The next morning, Lu Jiang picked two jars of canned fruit and a can of luncheon meat from his home. He then borrowed a mule cart from the brigade, had a simple breakfast, and set off for Caohu Brigade with Feng Qingxue.

Second aunt Feng cradled her grandson, with Qingyun by her side, waiting at the intersection from early on.

Spotting the couple approaching in the distance on the mule cart, Second aunt Feng let out a smile, while Feng Qingyun, calling out "Sister, Brother-in-law," started to run towards them even before they arrived.

Lu Jiang quickly pulled the reins to stop the mule.

"Slow down! What if the mule kicks you?" Feng Qingxue chided her as she descended from the cart, checking her sister up and down. Her sister was unharmed and as plump and adorable as before she got married, Feng Qingxue heaved a sigh of relief.

With a giggle, Feng Qingyun pointed at the mule’s hoof, "Sister, I was far away. I wouldn’t get kicked! Sister, I missed you so much. Are you and Brother-in-law taking me with you today?"

Days without her sister were really tough.

Living in someone else’s house, even when they offered her the best food instead of coarse cereals, she felt embarrassed to eat. It was the same situation when she stayed at her aunt’s house before, where she waited for her sister until her neck was stiff.

Lu Jiang interjected, "Yes, your sister and I are taking you home today!"

"Wonderful!"

Amid the cheers from Feng Qingyun, Second aunt Feng approached, her face beaming with joy. "Don’t block the road here. Let’s go home, and we can talk more then. Qingxue, I have something to give you!" she exclaimed.

"What is it?" Feng Qingxue asked.

Second aunt Feng said with a smile, "The money received from your wedding gifts."

The guests attending the banquet didn’t come for free. Depending on their closeness with Feng Qingxue, they offered money as gifts. Relatives like Uncle Wang’s siblings each gave five dollars, Uncle Feng, being a relative, also gave five. Distant relatives like those from Caohu brigade gave less, with some giving only three to five cents, while some gave a dollar. Those without money gave several jin of coarse cereal.

Feng Qingxue’s biological brothers should have also given wedding gifts, but they were absent and therefore counted out.

When settling the accounts, everyone finally understood why the two brothers didn’t keep in touch with their sister. They were just scared of spending money and exerting effort!

Therefore, Uncle Feng and Second aunt Feng altogether collected thirty-two dollars and half, and about twenty jin of sweet potato, all of which were handed over to Feng Qingxue, along with the list of gifts. They then busied themselves with cooking.

"Uncle and Aunt, you don’t need to bother. We’re going home for lunch. My father-in-law told us he will cook for the three of us. Lu Jiang is still injured, so could my two cousins help us move the large box and some furniture onto the cart?" Feng Qingxue requested. They had to move their belongings since they were going to settle in Wanglou Brigade.

"No problem!" Feng Qingyun answered definitively.

Despite the sisters being driven out without anything, they had managed to acquire quite a lot in this year.

A wardrobe, cupboard, bed, tables, chairs, boxes, kitchen utensils, bedding, clothing, etc. couldn’t all fit on a mule cart. Uncle Feng borrowed two additional mule carts from the brigade, finally clearing the room.

Since the doors and windows were made from superb wood, Uncle Feng also took them down and loaded them onto the cart.

"I heard your two elder brothers have their eyes on this house. Based on their heartless behaviour, you don’t owe them anything! Don’t worry about the vegetable garden outside. When it’s time to harvest the fruits, vegetables, and grains, I’ll collect them and deliver them to you. Your grandfather mentioned that he will take back your share of the property when the time comes."
