Niu Yibao and Lu Jiang were both big eaters, finishing off a pot of porridge between them, leaving no buns, and only a bit of soup left from the veggies. Niu Yibao dutifully cleaned up and returned the earthen pot to the canteen, getting back the five cents deposit to give to Feng Qingxue.

"Qingxue, let Niu Yibao stay with me tonight and you return to the guest house to rest," Lu Jiang proposed.

Feng Qingxue gently nodded her head.

Even though she wanted to stay with Lu Jiang, they were not formally married, and thus they had to consider their public image. Else, if someone were to report them, it could lead to a lot of trouble.

With Niu Yibao present in the room, she was bashful about comforting Lu Jiang in hushed tones and instead pretended to be busy straightening the blankets and pillows.

Lu Jiang’s eyes were fixed on her, following her every move.

Niu Yibao, the simple-minded man, noticed that the typically harsh and cruel Commander Lu, who was devoid of the terror and menace he showed on the battlefield, had eyes as soft as water.

Ah, that would give him quite a story to share with his comrades when he went back, thought Niu Yibao.

At Lu Jiang’s instruction, while the day was still light, Niu Yibao escorted Feng Qingxue back to the guest house.

"I appreciate your help, thank you."

It was hot, the room stifling, and not bathing was unbearable.

Early next morning, while it was still dark, Feng Qingxue went to a nearby grocery store. Fortunately, she saw some fresh fish and shrimp, as well as half a pig’s foot in the store, so she quickly lined up.

The province was located on the national border, surrounded by battles. Thanks to the border soldiers, it was peaceful. So, the locals revered the soldiers and their families more than in other areas. Someone noticed that Feng Qingxue was holding a military grain ticket, and they quickly let her go ahead. The people lining up moved aside willingly, allowing her to purchase first. They wouldn’t buy anything until she’d made her purchases.

"Thank you, thank you!" Feng Qingxue was extremely moved.

She laughed softly and replied, "Not at all, auntie. My fiance was seriously injured and is in the hospital. I’m buying these to help him recover."
