Chapter 1769: Chapter 1769: Untitled Untitled 6

In order to save her nephew, Deng Hongling did not refuse but thanked her profusely.

Before Feng Qingxue left, she attended to the wound on Deng Hongling’s forehead, cleaning the blood, disinfecting it, applying antiseptic, and covering it with several layers of white gauze using tape. Upon closer inspection, Feng Qingxue noticed scars all over her scalp, forehead, neck, and cheeks. Most of them were small and scattered, except for the long and deep scar on her face. Her dull, yellow hair was cut in a chaotic mess.

Noticing Feng Qingxue’s gentle gaze, Deng Hongling forced a bitter smile and said, "Our family background is not good. We’ve been criticized and beaten frequently. I’m used to everyone avoiding us. Now, I just want to save Xiaowo’s life."

Feng Qingxue patted her shoulder, "Things will get better. As long as there’s life, there’s hope."

Tears instantly rolled down Deng Hongling’s cheeks, and she hastily wiped them away, "I’ll go rub Xiaowo with alcohol."

Feng Qingxue also took a thermos from the bamboo basket, went out, bought half a bucket of rice porridge and a few vegetable buns, and retrieved a few hard-boiled eggs from her space during the journey.

Deng Hongling had already followed her instructions to give her nephew physical cooling treatment and said awkwardly, "I don’t have money now, could I pay you later?"

Feng Qingxue poured the porridge into a broken bowl on the damaged table, saying, "No need to repay me; it didn’t cost much anyway."

"Xiaowo is already much better. You’ve saved his life. How can we take it for granted that you spend money without us paying you back?" Deng Hongling insisted, "Please give me your name and address. I’ll repay you as soon as I can."

Feng Qingxue smiled slightly, "If you want to repay it, donate to an orphanage when you are able; it’ll be as if you’ve paid me back."

Deng Hongling was stunned for a moment and then said softly, "You are truly a good person."

"Eat something first. I’ll feed your nephew." Feng Qingxue raised her hand, "Don’t refuse, your nephew is unconscious, and you can’t feed him. I’m used to taking care of patients, and I know how to make him swallow."

Deng Hongling choked up, "Thank you, doctor."

"I just can’t harden my heart against children. Are you both the only ones left in your family?"

Deng Hongling finished her porridge in one gulp, shaking her head, "My parents died young. I grew up with my brother. My brother was sent to the Northwest Farm, and I haven’t seen him since the day he was sent there. I wanted to visit him, but they keep strict control over here, and they won’t let me leave. I’ve been publicly criticized and forced to write self-criticisms every day, and I have to take care of Xiaowo. Years have passed, and I don’t know if my brother is alive or dead. My brother wouldn’t have ended up like this if it weren’t for my sister-in-law’s letter reporting us. She said our family was a large landlord and accused my brother of having rebellious intentions. She divorced my brother with their consent and severed ties with our family, abandoning her own son too."

Feng Qingxue remembered that Zhao Anbang’s father had once been sent to the Northwest Farm, but now he’d returned to enjoy his old age. She said, "What is your brother’s name? I’ll ask someone to look into it."

"My brother’s name is Deng Nan. He was an officer, implicated because of our family’s background."

Feng Qingxue’s heart stirred.

Lu Jiang once said that Shi Guantao, Zhao Yong, and he were three of the five survivors from their company, and one of the other two was named Deng Nan, with whom contact was lost long ago.

There were so many comrades, and communication was difficult, so contact was maintained with only a portion of them.

"Did your brother participate in the Korean War?" Feng Qingxue asked.

Deng Hongling nodded, "Yes, we’re very close to the Northeast here. The first battlefield my brother went to after joining the army was North Korea, and he later became a regiment leader."

... survived and came back, o(╥﹏╥)o
