Chapter 157: Chapter 0157: Injured and Amnesic 1_1
The large copper pot was something she had found in a junkyard and bought with her own money. Its cylindrical shape didn’t require a stove, and could be heated directly from the bottom; it could be accurately described as a tea brazier.
Since her own family had an iron pot for boiling water, she handed this copper pot to the children, along with the earthenware pot she used before she had the iron one.
She also brought a machete for Jiang He to defend himself with.
Even though large wild animals are rare in the mountains, it’s essential to take preventative measures ahead of time to avoid panicking in a crisis.
Spring was returning to the earth and the weather was gradually warming, yet mornings and evenings were still cold. They shouldn’t hastily discard their winter clothes, or they wouldn’t be heeding the advice of "covering up in spring and autumn." So, Feng Qingxue brought them some old clothes and shoes. Some items were bought from second-hand stores, while others were exchanged for a bit of grain on the black market. Apart from the cotton clothes and shoes, all the other items were washed clean, then boiled in hot water before being dried out in the sun.
The mountain roads were rough, and the ground was full of thorns; walking barefoot was likely to result in bloodied feet.
Feng Qingxue had noticed this while navigating the route, and remembering how most of the children she saw at the ruined temple were barefoot, or at best, wearing worn-out straw shoes, she had prepared ahead of time.
Upon hearing that the things were for them, the children cheered and jumped in excitement, an emotion too great for words.
Watching the younger children eagerly trying on their new clothes and shoes and jumping around in them, Jiang He turned away to wipe his eyes. When he turned back, his eyes were slightly red, but his gaze carried an unprecedented determination.
Before leaving, Feng Qingxue pulled Jiang He aside and gave him a patched cloth bag.
"Auntie Xue, what’s this?" He felt the weight of the bag in his hands and a guess sprung to his mind that was so incredible he could hardly believe it himself.
"I’ve brought some bran mixed with cornmeal from home for you guys. It’s not much, just about ten pounds or so. From now on, when you make a soup of wild vegetables, add some of this to the pot. Don’t just drink plain vegetable soup." Feng Qingxue ultimately couldn’t bear it.
Jiang He clutched the cloth bag, bending deep at the waist in gratitude.
Gratitude, he will remember it in his heart.
After descending the mountain, Feng Qingxue, before parting with Guan Cheng, strapped the empty carrier basket he handed her onto her back. She told him, "Tell Uncle Lu for me. My uncle and aunt have returned, ask someone to relay a message to Caohu for me."
"Got it, Auntie Xue!"
Feng Qingxue watched him head towards the direction of Wanglou Brigade, before she turned around and went back to Caohu.
Counting on her fingers, quite a few days had passed since Wang Jiao disappeared. Wang Zhenguo and Miao Fengqin had been secretly searching for her the whole time.
The day she took Guan Yu and Guan Cheng home, she ran into her aunt. She learned that her three elder cousins from her aunt’s side had also secretly gone out to find Wang Jiao. They returned with nothing to show for it. She recalled her aunt describing her brothers searching aimlessly like headless flies. They had checked their grandmother’s home and their aunt’s; they’d been to all their relatives’ homes but found no hint of her. They were clueless about where to look for Wang Jiao.
Setting aside Wang Jiao’s advances on Lu Jiang, the kind and soft-hearted Feng Qingxue didn’t want any harm to come to her.
If something were to happen to Wang Jiao, even though her uncle wouldn’t necessarily say anything, her aunt will almost certainly lay the blame on her since Wang Jiao ran away from home because she hoped to marry Lu Jiang instead of Zhang Yuejin.
It’s not that she believed people were unkind at heart—it’s just that she knew far too well the complexity of human emotions.
When it comes to their own children, every parent is reluctant to blame their child. They would instead vent their anger on others, even if the fault lies with their child not someone else.
