Chapter 1567: Chapter 1567: Death Without Proof1

As soon as she heard that old Mr. and Mrs. Liu had passed away, Wang Guizhen secretly let out a sigh of relief. Her expression softened, though she noticed the shocked faces of the large group of children, the orderly, and the nanny in the house.

Liu Zhenguo’s words were too startling for them. They had never known that Liu Zhenguo had another daughter.

With this child added, the Liu Family would now have nine children.

"Dad, what did you say? You mean she’s going to live in our house from now on?" Liu Yanyan’s face showed clear dissatisfaction as she gave Liu Erya a fierce glare.

Not only had this girl taken her brand-new quilt, but now she was going to live in their house, taking over her room. Liu Yanyan had long hated squeezing into a single room with her nieces and cousins—four people crammed together. Yet her father wouldn’t let her move into his study, and now he was giving that room to an outsider.

Liu Erya kept her head down, said nothing, and quietly shrank back a little.

Liu Zhenguo, however, held onto his granddaughter’s hand and glared fiercely at his youngest daughter. "Erya is my granddaughter; of course, she’s going to live here. Liu Yanyan, don’t go frightening Erya. You’re her aunt, so don’t bully your niece! As an elder, you should act like one. Stop throwing childish tantrums."

"I’m their aunt!" Liu Yanyan pointed toward her other nieces and nephews, clearly unwilling to acknowledge Liu Erya.

Liu Zhenguo was just about to lose his temper, but Liu Erya spoke softly, "Grandpa, don’t be angry. If no one likes me, could you rent me a place outside instead? I can take care of myself."

Fubao had taught her this—retreating in order to advance.

But honestly, compared to living in a family where she wasn’t welcome, she thought living outside might be better. She could visit Fubao often, and there’d be no need to endure people’s cold looks. Even though she was still very young, she could tell the difference between kindness and malice in her surroundings.

The unrelated Lu Family treated her well, while the blood-related Liu Family didn’t welcome her—except for her grandpa.

Hearing Erya’s words, Liu Zhenguo felt as if his heart was being cut with a knife. "Silly girl, if I let you live outside, what kind of person would I be? You just stay here obediently. If you want to eat something, drink something, or buy something, just tell Uncle Orderly. I’ll give him a separate budget to make sure your needs are taken care of."

With so many people in the house and everything being busy and chaotic, the children were bound to compete over food and clothing. He worried that when he was occupied with work, the family might neglect Erya. That’s why, prompted by Cheng Baoguo’s advice, he made this decision.

Compared to the family or the nanny, Liu Zhenguo trusted the orderly more. Whatever instructions he gave, the orderly would carry them out meticulously.

Wang Guizhen finally processed what was happening and exclaimed in shock, "Old Liu, Old Liu, are you saying—are you saying this child is Yuanyuan’s? How did she end up here?"

Liu Zhenguo didn’t answer her. Looking at the group of children in front of him, none of them were as quiet and well-behaved as Erya. A wave of frustration swept over him. He decided not to publicly dig into the past for fear of damaging Wang Guizhen’s reputation. After arranging for Erya to settle in, he returned to the bedroom to continue questioning her about the events of 1955. "Comrade Wang Guizhen, I need an answer."

Wang Guizhen had just washed her face and was rubbing snowflake cream onto her skin. "Haven’t I already told you countless times? Do I really need to repeat it again and again? What’s the point? It’s not that I didn’t go to pick her up—it’s that old Mr. and Mrs. Liu didn’t have children and wouldn’t agree to give her to us, no matter how much we begged. I figured, since we already had three children with us, we might as well agree to it. Isn’t this kind of situation pretty common? Plenty of your comrades who didn’t have kids adopted their comrades’ children. I think old Mr. and Mrs. Liu were probably doing the same thing."
