Chapter 1564: Chapter 1564 Mission Accomplished 2

Hearing this bad news, Lu Jiang and Feng Qingxue were stunned.

Over the years, they had clearly seen how good Third Grandpa Lu had been to Xibao. Naturally, they felt very sad now.

Feng Qingxue wiped the corner of her eye. "Did Third Grandpa Lu leave any last words?"

"No words for you all. He passed very suddenly and peacefully, after having lunch and taking a nap. But a few days before his death, he called Xibao over. It seems he left something for him," Cheng Baoguo said, though he didn’t ask and didn’t know what it was. "The night Old Master Lu passed away, the old lady followed him soon after."

"To hold hands and grow old together" — perhaps that was the perfect description for them.

Lu Jiang and Feng Qingxue acknowledged the situation, their expressions sorrowful. Since both of them worked outside and couldn’t get away, they wouldn’t be able to attend the funeral. Given the constraints of the times, the funeral likely wouldn’t be lavishly conducted, either.

After finishing the bad news, Cheng Baoguo turned to the good news. "Xibao’s luck is really something else."

Feng Qingxue asked, "What’s the good news this time? If it involves Xibao, we should keep it low-key." Xibao was so young. Letting him constantly be the center of attention could easily bring unintended consequences.

Cheng Baoguo chuckled. "He was playing with me at the old house, digging around casually as if to plant a tree. Guess what happened?"

"Did he find treasure?" Wang Cuilan asked.

Cheng Baoguo nodded. "He did. He found several treasures, possibly buried by the original owner of the old house. We couldn’t trace it back, and we couldn’t just keep it to ourselves. But we were also afraid that handing it over to the state would cause the families living in the compound to dig up the place like crazy. So we discussed it and reburied the treasures a bit deeper. We’ll just leave it to fate from now on."

Such luck — truly extraordinary.

Lu Jiang and Feng Qingxue shook their heads and smiled, not particularly concerned about the ultimate fate of those treasures.

"Oh, by the way," Cheng Baoguo added, "Old Master Huang Qinghong, who had been sent down, has returned to the Capital. I’m not sure if his job was reinstated, but he’ll probably have reached the Capital by the time you’re no longer there."

That was indeed great news. Lu Jiang and Feng Qingxue were both very happy.

Fubao suddenly stuck out her little head. "Mom, do we still have Snake Oil Cream? If not, Clam Oil will do. I noticed Erya’s hands and feet were a bit chapped."

Feng Qingxue stood up. "I’ll go pour some hot water and have Erya wash her hands and feet before applying the cream."

"Okay, Mom." Fubao gave her thanks. "Mom, can you dig out my clothes and shoes from last year and the year before? I’ll give them to Erya later. She should be able to wear them. She barely has a few clothes in her little bundle. Giving her something new feels a bit too much, but not giving her anything would be tough. Liu Uncle’s family has too many kids — it’s always about wearing things for three years new, three years old, and three more patched-up years. They probably can’t afford to worry about Erya specifically."

"Sure!" Feng Qingxue agreed without hesitation. She loved her daughter’s kindness and thoughtfulness.

Wang Cuilan laughed. "This is what we call leading by example."

How else would children learn such exemplary virtues if not from their parents’ actions?

Liu Erya stayed at the Lu Family home for two days, feeling as if she were in a dream. She ate her fill, stayed warm, and the entire Lu Family, young and old, treated her with kindness. Even the triplets, who were a few years younger than her, sweetly called her "sister" with every sentence.

It was during this atmosphere that Liu Zhenguo was summoned to the Lu Family home.

"Comrade Lu, what’s the matter? You’re not even resting this late," Liu Zhenguo said with a hearty laugh.

He had come after dinner, and the Lu Family had also finished their meal. Feng Qingxue was watching the children practice their calligraphy in the study. Fubao and Ye Yan didn’t need any prompting: one was drawing, and the other was doing homework. Only the triplets were purely playing around, while Erya stood next to Fubao, watching her draw. Hearing the conversation from the main room, Feng Qingxue waited until they had almost finished talking. She told the children to play and then made her way to the main room.
