Chapter 153: Chapter 0153: Cave Dwelling Arrangement 1_1

Guan Cheng was incredibly surprised, the Lu family was actually doing well enough to have dinner!

And not just a thin rice soup that barely cast a shadow, but a thick, rich rice porridge that exuded an irresistible aroma.

A square table was laid out with a dish of pickles, a plate of sliced salted duck eggs, the yolks of which were practically oozing oil.

Guan Yu’s eyes lit up like stars instantly.

He had eaten something while he was unconscious, so his brother told him later, but he hadn’t tasted it. Now seeing the aromatic rice porridge, the fragrant salted duck eggs, his mouth was watering.

A pang of pain shot through Father Lu. Once a proud and admired descendant of the Guan Family now reduced to this, with barely enough clothing to cover himself, struggling to feed himself, stirred within him a sense of vicarious sadness. He ladled a bowl of porridge for Guan Cheng, passed half a salted duck egg, and called Lu Tianjun to give him a multi-grain pancake.

"Acheng, eat up. Make yourself at home."

"Thank you, Grandpa Lu, I can’t finish this!" Guan Cheng pushed back the pancake, only picking up his bowl after Father Lu and Feng Qingxue started to eat. The rising steam obscured his expression.

Feng Qingxue quickly commented, "The Guan brothers are starving, porridge will do for now, it’s good for the stomach."

"Yes, I’d forgotten. Let’s have porridge for a few days to settle our stomachs, then we can eat more," said Father Lu, signaling Guan Cheng.

After Feng Qingxue fed Guan Yu half a bowl of cooled porridge, she noticed Guan Cheng savoring the porridge in his bowl, accompanied by a half salted duck egg. He did so in small, appreciative sips, an approach that bordered on reverence, yet he maintained a perfect dining etiquette, ingrained deep within his bones, that hadn’t changed a bit despite years of hardship on the streets.

After dinner, Lu Tianjun was preparing to wash the dishes when Guan Cheng hurriedly picked up the stack of bowls.

"Acheng is really hardworking, I can’t imagine how much less housework I’d have to do with you around!" Father Lu sighed softly, didn’t stop Guan Cheng, and signaled Lu Tianjun to help.

Preventing him would give him the feeling of being a guest, which would not be conducive for future interactions.

When the cousins came back after washing the dishes, Lu Jiang beckoned Guan Cheng to sit down.

"Acheng, your Aunt Xue told me all about what happened. You’ve kept the dignity of the Guan family intact. You have a sense of loyalty and righteousness, truly worthy of being a Guan family descendant! I am very proud of and thankful for you."

Guan Cheng replied indifferently, "I was just trying to survive."

Surviving with his younger brother, that was their only hope, as simple as that.

Father Lu nodded, "Yes, struggling to live is better than dying. We can only harbour hope while we’re alive, once we’re dead, no matter how big our ambitions may have been, they will never be realized. Acheng, if you don’t mind the shabby cattle shed, settle in peace. As long as we have a mouthful to eat, so will you and your brother. We may not have wealth or high social status, but with your uncle and Aunt Xue, our chances of survival are much greater than others."

Guan Cheng stood up and respectfully bowed to Father Lu and Feng Qingxue, "Thank you, thank you Grandpa Lu, thank you Aunt Xue. I’m unable to repay your great kindness at the moment, but when I grow up, I will definitely repay you well."

"What talk of repayment within a family? We took you in, not for your repayment when you grow up."

Upon hearing Feng Qingxue’s words, a slight smile finally appeared on Guan Cheng’s bruised face. He nodded, "Yes, I won’t mention it again." He would keep it in his heart, forever and always.
