Chapter 1522: Chapter 1522: Qingyun Becomes a Disciple 4
It is difficult to find a true confidant in life.
How could Feng Qingxue not understand this truth? Yet, everyone has their own life to live, and separation is inevitable. Just like Lu Jiang and his comrades, aren’t they now scattered across different corners of the world?
"Ajiang has been waiting impatiently for a long time. It’s only because I’m still finishing up my studies here, and he’s just been transferred to Wucheng, busy with handing over responsibilities and reorganizing the work, that he hasn’t pressured me yet." Feng Qingxue’s heart had already flown to Wucheng. "When children don’t see their parents for extended periods, it’s easy for them to feel estranged. I feel terrible about this, deeply guilty, because my selfishness has deprived them of a proper life with their parents. But now that my schooling is complete, I can’t let them suffer any longer. Before leaving, though, I should bring Xiaoyun to pay a visit to Mr. Guan."
At the time, Guan Yufeng had fallen ill—a woman past her sixties living alone, with her children all in different cities. She hadn’t come out of her house for two days, and no one had noticed her condition. Delirium had already set in. Had it not been for her neighbor, Professor Jin, who suddenly stopped by and urgently summoned Feng Qingxue to treat her, it’s likely that her frail body would have passed quietly away.
She was a gentle, graceful Jiang Nan beauty, ethereal like water. Born into privilege, she had once lived abroad with her husband, Jin Xu. After the founding of the nation, Jin Xu had resolutely returned to the country, dedicating himself to its development—and she had followed him back without hesitation.
Jin Xu was a physicist; his contributions included work on the atomic and hydrogen bombs.
Of course, all of this was top secret. All scientists involved in such research had concealed their identities, and it was not until decades later—when some had already passed away, and others were enduring illness—that their names and deeds were revealed to the public. Even Guan Yufeng herself didn’t know exactly what her husband’s work entailed; she hadn’t seen him in years, communicating sparingly via letters that arrived once or twice a year. She couldn’t even recall the year of their last correspondence, though she did receive his award money: ten yuan in large bills.
Due to her life-saving intervention, coupled with Feng Qingxue’s inherently kind-hearted nature—always quick to help those in need—Guan Yufeng held Feng Qingxue in high regard. Naturally, her affection extended to Feng Qingyun.
"Your sister mentioned that you study music. Sing a song for me." Guan Yufeng put on her reading glasses.
Seeing the elegance of Guan Yufeng, whose hair had turned silver but whose poise remained intact, Feng Qingyun was so moved she almost couldn’t speak. Hearing her request, she promptly cleared her throat and began singing one of her best pieces.
Guan Yufeng listened attentively, then nodded, "You sing well."
"Really, Mr. Guan?" Feng Qingyun felt as though she were floating on clouds after receiving Guan Yufeng’s recognition.
Guan Yufeng smiled and affirmed, then turned to Feng Qingxue and remarked, "Your younger sister indeed has talent. Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration, but that one percent of talent is incomparable to ninety-nine percent effort. For example, someone who’s tone-deaf might love singing, but no amount of effort can surpass a child gifted with musical talent."
Feng Qingxue replied with a smile, "You’re absolutely right. Both talent and hard work are important. But without putting in effort, even the most gifted person accomplishes nothing. She has this touch of genius and is willing to work hard. That’s why, during her vacation, I wanted to ask for your guidance, even if she only learns a little—it would be of immense value to her for the rest of her life."
Guan Yufeng agreed readily, "If you’re not averse to it, have her bring me a bowl of tea. I’ve grown old and just went through an illness. I wouldn’t want the knowledge I’ve gathered in my lifetime to be lost with me."
Without hesitation, Feng Qingyun respectfully knelt down to express her gratitude.
... So, today I attended an engagement ceremony. Since it was up to me to prepare the dowry on behalf of the groom’s side, I’m absolutely exhausted... Developing atomic and hydrogen bombs, the great contributors only received ten yuan as a reward—unbelievable.
